  1. Was living in Tamworth at the time and got to say all my Brummie mates were massively impressed by our following that night. They couldn’t believe we had the side as well as the away section terrace.

Up there with best atmosphere with City away. Ashby was fun too!

Still remember that Mardon goal and the Walshy shuffles on the wing.

Match was shown on Central TV and still have the video.

    Happy days.

  2. Given that Warnock is likely gone, Mick McCarthy is a realistic alternative.

We’re a mess on the playing side. We need someone with experience and a bit of ‘presence’ to sort us out.

Can almost guarantee it’ll be Mark Robins though. He’s a typical SL appointment.

How did we get 38K+ v Liverpool in the first division in 1977 then Swede? Not disputing it just wondered how they managed it?

Rumour was that it was 41,000!

‘Ramming’ was the method that achieved that number.

Managed to get in earlyish,, so wasn’t too bad in that part of the East End I was stood. Late comers were the one’s who suffered I think. Know a few that were turned away when the gates were closed before the start of the match.

  4. Think that was the FA Cup match. Lost 1-0?

Many memories of that day, arriving on the bank behind the stand to look down on a maze of corridors leading to the turnstiles watching a mob of City fans chasing some Wolves about. The fact that what looked to be an open terrace on the TV was foolking massive and had a roof at the back and the freshly painted yellow stand being daubed with red Knowle West/City graffiti.

    Great day out.

  5. In the mid-70s Birmingham City seemed quite active in the area too. Our school team captain went to them and eventually played a few first team games before moving down the leagues.

Quite extraordinarily, after the second day of my new job  I went out with with work colleagues to watch the local side, Tamworth FC. Stood next to the tunnel and who ran out leading the team - my ex-school team captain from Bristol!

Another of the team was scouted by Tottenham, but didn’t breakthrough the ranks.

What with the Mabbutt’s being grabbed by the Bristol teams at the time, appears Norwich scouts didn’t extend their net to the north side of Bristol.

So after the SARS outbreak in 2004 the Chinese closed all wet markets . Only to reverse this decision 4 months later.

If that indeed is the case, I think in my lifetime I’m going to see China rise from a Fourth World Country to World Leader and then back again.

I’m no international lawyer, but assume there is a case for them to be sued for trillions. The case, I assume, would based on the administration allowed the continuance of activities that posed a known high risk to human health, added to that, the governance ‘system’ tried to suppress news of the current outbreak.

Think they deserve all they get, any Country that permits boiling dogs alive should not be part of the civilised world in my opinion.

  7. One of many issues, that we’ve all got to untangle, sick, dependent parents et al but anyone know of recommendations for dealing with shared access children?

Would love to say that my partner’s daughter could sort it amicably with her ex but I don’t think that’s going to happen! Assume they’ve got to go to one side or the other for a period. Makes sense. ...but common sense goes out the window between warring factions ..even as I say if this is potentially a matter of life and death!

Partner’s daughter was going to complete on her new house purchase next week ...don’t think it’s going to happen! Shite timing.

  8. Well, the closest Spooners to Tim Martin’s residence here in Devon was apparently rammed this lunchtime.

Contrary to what I read in an earlier posting  I saw somewhere earlier this week that the Sponners in Plymouth had 3 staff with Virus symptoms. Maybe they’ve not succumbed ... but the risks for all are clear.

Think we need to step up regulation and enforcement rather than rely on advisory’s and individual, voluntary actions - however much that runs against the grain of the Government’s principles.

  9. One of the very few upsides of this, at least the numbskull in Government who said a couple of weeks ago that our agricultural sector was unimportant will be sacked. For some **** to come out with this, when we already import 60% of our foodstuffs, defies belief. With India keeping its antibiotics for its own population, won’t be soon ‘til we have food wars whether connected with this virus or the next global crisis.

Bloke who said it was probably the same pillock who said a few years ago we should get rid of CCTV because it was an infringement on civil liberties. Most convictions are now secured, in part, on CCTV imagery.

To think idiots like these are involved in governing this crisis! God help us.

  10. Interesting these reports about it circulating in the UK around Xmas.

Was talking to my neighbour yesterday. She has quite a few clients that travel abroad frequently...and went down just before Xmas, wiped out, dry cough she couldn’t get rid of and then developed pneumonia and was treated for that. Took her 3 weeks to recover.

She may come in handy for my shopping soon!

Did have contact with her before and pretty soon after and didn’t catch it which, given I’ve had Lymes Disease which lowers your immune system, is pretty surprising.

  11.

Can someone explain after Phase 2 ‘Delay’, what Phase 3 ‘Research’ is?

I should bleeding hope we are researching our arses off to find what, why, how and now FFS!!!

Government shambles to date, not quite on a par to the Chinese mind, which seemingly due to their insanely cruel live wildlife trade and/or witch-doctor potions derived from killing endangered animals seem to be responsible for this crisis.

Been out tonight to get some food in a supermarket - no tissues, no paracetamol no hand wash - madness

Same in Devon, add no kitchen wipes either!

Utter madness, how am I supposed to get the curry off my kitchen tops now?

Exeter-based Flybe looks like it’s been pushed over the edge too tonight. That’s bad news for a few neighbours.

  13. The tentacles of Bristol Sport are sucking me in!!!!

Nearly as excited by that as watching City .........  ok, I’ll admit it ....... more excited by that than watching City.

Excellent performance.  SL, please note,  appoint a quality manager and, more often than not, they deliver.

Even started to watch the Basketball as well.

Not sure the blood pressure can cope with three sports though!

Interesting collection of reminiscence of the reading game. Not sure everyone claiming to be there was.

Because it was a top of the table clash we travelled up in numbers. With terraces we were in early. What sparked everything off was a group of city in the away end(or side of the pitch)as a scrap started ,city fans from other parts of the stadium ran across the pitch to join in.

City fan’s gained the territory and the fighting stopped. When reading team came out it was virtually silent as city fans now in all parts of the stadium. When City came out it was like a home game ,cheering from all sides.Eventually the police started to shift the city fans back to the away end which is when the terrace got ripped up and things got a bit grim, also lots of city attacking the police stood on r side of away terrace keeping fans away from reading side.Lots of split heads from truncheons.

The game itself was a massive disappointment and we were never really in it.

Not involved in any of the above myself, definitely carnage for a time ,certainly nothing to be proud of ,but it was fairly par for the course at that time.

Anyone remember when city fans replaced the padlocks on the gates at back of tote end and entered on mass before the game ,stood in the away terrace looked like large group of rovers arriving until the chant(gas gas got to get rid of the gas )chant went up and the centre of the tote end emptied of blue and white.

Glad I don’t have to take my kids to games like that now,but as a teenager it was definitely a buzz.

Went in the Tote from the back just before kick off the first derby game after segregation was introduced. Didn’t end particularly well but have the honour, alongside several others, of being the last on the Tote.

The few lads left in the pub were claiming that now the trouble makers had gone it was alright to continue drinking, the landlord begged to differ.

Thanks for explaining the reasons for one of the strangest pre-match atmospheres we’ve experienced in a pub.

Didn’t stop us having a couple though!

Took the Town End every year 69-73

Yep. Even when Millwall came down following their match with us at The Gate the previous Saturday.

Know there’s been a bit of a ‘do’ away at Bolton and Millwall in the relatively recent past but was the last big ‘off’ The Cherry Tree incident at Plymouth? Most odd was walking up to the this random pub only to witness a hundred or so City being chased down the road by the owners of a second hand car dealership wielding axes. Undeterred went into the pub and it was like a bomb had just gone off, but bizarely a few groups of stray City lads having a pint.

  17. They might want to move the bus stop closer to Ashton Gate. If they make that momentus achievement with the Council/Opertors it doesn’t necessarily mean the bus will stop at it! They regularly fly past the stop located at The Cumberland Basin stop when they see football supporters waiting.

If I was Steve Lansdown, I’d rip into this pathetic excuse of a mayor and embarrass him on the national stage. Think Sir Steve has a greater media platform than some jumped-up politician.

We could start with the investment Steve’s made in Bristol, the PR, the income generated and then turn to the dear ‘Mr Fix It’ Mayor. Highlight the 1000 space park and ride that stands empty next to the stadium during matches and has done for the past decade while local streets are congested with parked cars, the new multi-million pound Metrobus ‘service’ that takes in as many congested roundabouts and the most tortuous route possible from The Centre to Ashton Gate and has no stop next to the Ground and no buses that stop for football supporters, the railway next to the Ground that has been derelict for decades and when planned to open doesn’t has a stop for an entertainment venue that is the largest in the region ...and on and on.

Oh, nearly forgot, to cap it all off and make access to the Ground virtually impossible by any means ... the proposed diesel exclusion zone taking in the biggest open area in Bristol with the least impact on residents health ..unsurprisingly being the key access road to The Gate.

Seriously, only a bitter Mayoral Saghead  who wants to prevent City achieving anything could come up with such crap.
