And neither would most OTIB critics call us a decent Championship side either. We even played a player who some said should never play for us again. We beat what was in front of us so let’s just enjoy the moment. The next excuse for negativity will be along soon I’m sure. We are Bristol City after all !

Wasn't aiming to be negative per sé. We were the better of two teams.

Just no need to get carried away with the result and performance against a team of cones in the first half.

We made 5 changes ourselves, so the arguement goes both ways.

Oh I quite agree.... I wouldn't say our line up was Championship material either. It wasn't a criticism of Cov, more a 'don't get carried away' comment.

4 goals for city on a Wednesday night against a decent championship side, and into the next round of the cup.

    - Competition for places heating up, and players proving their value to the club.

    - An academy product scoring twice.

    - And a dominant performance from start to finish.

Yet some describe us as "a mess".

Too all the fans who stayed positive - enjoy that one, and let's look forward to the next one on Saturday.

And too all the negative 'fans' - there doesn't seem to be much noise coming from you tonight...

    Up the City!!

I wouldn't call the team Cov played last night "a decent championship side".

Why at a pre-season friendly does it make it worse, what a odd comment

Because, to an extent, I can understand how some idiots can get carried away with themselves in the moment of something like a genuine local derby or another game. That might genuinely mean something.

Frankly I find your response to the OPa  far more 'odd comment'.

Ok, so this post is going to annoy some.

First off, I'm not naive about the behaviour of football fans. Before moving away from Bristol, throughout the 90s, I had a season ticket in the upper part of Dolman block C so was fairly close to the 'excitable' fans and have heard, joined in with and laughed frequently at the songs and general banter that is standard across football.

But yesterday was, for me, a different experience. Now my views will be affected by the fact that I was taking my 7 year old to his first ever football match and I wanted it to be a success.

It wasn't (ok the football didn't help but that's not the issue). I had already warned him that he would hear lots of swearing and I expected to hear all forms and lots of it. Again, not the issue.

For me, the issue is the anger and vitriol that accompanied it and the apparent obsession with paedophillia. This was a pre season friendly in sunny weather at another West country club. Perfect opportunity for singing, banter and classic terrace humour.

Why then did I ( and more importantly my 7 year old) have to listen to at least 25 minutes of foul abuse, singling out a Plymouth fan as a ****ing n*nce, a ****ing p*edo and various other forms of the same abuse. All delivered, as I say, with what seemed like genuine anger. Why?

Even when the target had to relocate because of the abuse and there was a kid left there, apparently crying (according to the bloke next to me), it prompted songs of 'where's your daddy gone?', 'we want our paedo back' etc...

My lad didn't know where to look and when I asked if he was alright he said he was a bit scared. I asked why and he said because of 'all the angry men'.

    When did paedophillia become funny?

He heard the terms so many times yesterday that all he wanted to know afterwards was what a 'paedo' and a 'n*nce' were. I dread to think what he'll be saying in the playground tomorrow.

Why can you go to the cricket or the rugby and still have great crowd interaction without all the extreme abuse.

I know some will read this and think I'm being over sensitive, and there may be some truth in that, because I was so keen for my lad to enjoy the day (and he didn't) but I really think there is a question of appropriate behaviour to be asked.

Sorry you and your boy had to experience this. It shouldn't be the case and quite frankly I don't know why football 'fans' have to be like this when other teams sports don't have the same.

And at a pre-season friendly makes it even more deplorable.

Wanting to take my 7 year old (he saw one game when he was 4) but its behaviour like this that puts me off.

It is the Manager and coaching staffs job to prepare, organise, enthuse and motivate the team. If they are claiming there is nothing they can do then either change the players you are talking about or accept you have failed and move over for someone else to have a go.

Players don't give up on Managers they have belief and confidence in.

Short termism approach. If players cannot get motivated they need to be moved on (easier said than done I know).

I see a group who are storming. There are clearly players calling es h other out. Long term (if we can wait that long) they'll be a better group for this hard run.

Yes his hands are tied but that doesn’t mean he can’t coach improvement- that is the least we should expect from an experienced manager.

He must step up and improve the players who have talent like Kasey and JD not simply cast them aside.

Teh trouble with your assessment is that every other manager in the league is trying for the same. Therefore, if everyone else is making steps forward any steps we make forward would have to be far in excess. And give the lack of quality and mental strength in some of the players in our squad it would have to be huge leaps.

They've got no-one to pass it to. Midfield is completely static, none of them want the ball.

    I'd be tempted to go;

                  Kalas    Atkinson   Baker

    Tanner     Massengo    James      Pring

                               Palmer

                      Weimann    Wells

Weimann can't pass 5 yards so we can't have him in the 'playmaker' role. Get Palmer there and playing through balls to Wells and Andi.

Keep Tanner and Pring further forward and wider so we actually have some width when attacking and defending.

    We'd be top by Feb!

I honestly don't think that with the players available there is a solution.

I do agree though the lack of movement in midfield is a core problem. I've never seen a CM player move less or more slowly then Tyreeq Bakinson. Even LJ in his time was more dynamic. James/King/O'Dowda are not dynamic, Massengo is the only one who in that position can create space but if he's the only one doing it hell easily be picked off.

I agree.  His role here is in part to set the foundations, get the club moving forward.  Someone else made a point that he might not be the “manager” when it comes to fruition.  I’m of that opinion too.  He’s being trusted by SL to get get the set-up right and not be conned.  He’s acting in a capacity with a wider remit of manager.

I seem to remember a number of vocal moaners.. I mean posters.... Clamouring for an experienced head to be brought into the club in a role similar to Pat Lam. Give them control to build the football on and off the pitch rather than having a head coach for the on the pitch/training ground and a CEO who does everything off the pitch.

Now some of those posters seem to not like what they asked for.

Personally, I see a man who is very clever and is building for the long term. The application of sport psychology is there for all to see. If you can't see what is happening I'd suggest Remeber the Titans as what's happening at the moment screams of a group of people that have come out of the forming phase of group dynamics and are in the storming phase.

Dear Steve its time for you to come out and either back NP or sack him.

In January we need to bring in at least 5 championship quality players two strikers two wingers and a Tough tackling midfielder.

We could get rid of Martin, JD, Palmer, COD, Vyner and Simpson who offer us little to maybe help to fund the signings

If NP is not allowed to shape his own squad then you might as well sack him but to find a manager with his experience who would come to BS3 is unlikely so please Steve put your hand in your deep pockets

The sheer delusion shown by some of our fans is hilarious and are summed up in this post!

The lack of technical ability in midfield and up front was most evident. The inability to control the ball and make passes seems out of our scope right now. The early season pressing is also somewhat diluted . There is clearly a lack of confidence in the side that is making matters worse. There are no quick solutions , no magic wand. The squad is not a great squad , it has too many compromises and is lacking in pace, abilty and power. It looks like we will need to move another 5/6 between Jan window and next summer. So this season is a huge compromise and will again be about survival. A home win  will come, and it will give everyone the confidence on and off the field. But Pearson cannot turn around the mess we were. (are) in unless we give him (or anyone else for that matter) more time. The squad needs a striker and a genuine wide player asap.

Have to say this is spot on. But have you noticed that the ability to do lal of this has disappeared since Massengo got injured?

Probably both shots on target contributed to the goal. First shot on target from Wells that was saved and the rebound to Scott which went in. Apart from that move, nothing else was on target

Think you'll find we had more than two shots on target. After all their keeper saved a shot from Wells in the first half, the goal and the save the keeper made in the 2nd half (which cannot be chalked as a shit on goal as the ref gave a goal kick). Stats, stats, and damned lies ???

I've never seen a player who people give so many excuses for as Wells

Face it, he's been a flop

Don't disagree with that. Buy not sure he is at fault for not scoring that opportunity given where was shooting from.

If it goes in everyone is saying what a superb finish it was. If the keeper did not pull that save off everyone is raving about the quality of the finish.

Did **** all, waste of a sub again , brain dead decision from the touch.line. Sit back, lose.

Disagree. COD up front should at this stage of the game be running his nuts off to press. If you leave Wells on who had been doing it all game what would be said 'should have taken hi off for fresh legs'

That substitution decision was not the problem, however much some people might like to make out it was!

    I want to see:

    - the Scott penalty shout (Scott didn't seem furious about it not being given but Wiemann and James did)

    - the Baker penalty, Baker seemed furious with the ref suggesting he thinks he got a foot on it (not sure how he would have) or that the Forest player went down (nobody else seemed angry with the ref though suggesting it was a pen).

    - the last goal as Bentley seemed insensed that the handball was not given but other were screaming offside (which they'd often get wrong if they were ball watching though).

Screams to me of poor game management and individual mistakes again.

Love to find out how Pearson has spent "a fair amount of money on the team today". Perhaps you could explain. And realising that a team relegated last year from the Prem with parachute payments are at a massive advantage compared to our team is being realistic and  not making excuses.

Cahill in on a free. True.

Why are we not competing with teams like Bournemouth? Because players like Cahill are on £75k a week!!! There in lies the difference. Wage budget not transfer fees my friend!

These Matchday threads show how polarised opinion gets based on one result. Wednesday night we’re shit, Saturday evening we’ve got a bunch of battlers who give their all!! Chris Martin is ******* useless Wednesday but scores a great winner at the weekend.

The point is, as you say, we are where we are and as long as Nige gets the best out of what we have we shouldn’t be looking over our shoulders. However to think there won’t get more games like Millwall over the course of the season is living in cloud cuckoo land. We just aren’t at the level to perform consistently and challenge the upper reaches of the table but the players do give their all every week. I’ll take that given the car crash of last season and the mismanagement going back three years.

Absolutely, I was at the game on Wednesday and you are right about how a result can polarise opinions.

Chris Martin won nearly everything that was lumped up to him (which was a lot given our midfield was virtually non-existent for 60 minutes). He didn't have a cracking game but then nor did anybody. Andi Wiemann was terrible, making runs that blocked off midfielders or Atkinson when they did try to carry the ball and run at Millwall.

Standing on the platform to come back to London Bridge though all the talk was about how crap Martin was and how we are relegation fodder if we continue to play like that.

Like you a sense of reality is needed. We are not going to be a top 4 team who win week in week out playing attractive expansive football. We need to battle for points by out running and outpressing the opposition (which is pretty much what Dave Rennie confirmed the fitness side of it is being set up to do). We'll also need to hold tight and wait as finances being what they are in football it's likely to be at least 2 seasons before some of the players here that Pearson might like to be rid of now are moved on.

No real need to make a remark like that was there really?

It was just my opinion, I have no idea on price brackets, only that I am bitterly disappointed we seemed to be financially hamstrung going into the season.

That being said I am thankful that we haven’t “done a derby/reading”.

    Happy?

Well it was a hilarious comment. To say that you have no idea of price brackets but also that your glad we haven't done a Derby/Reading shows you're totally aware why we've not bought a proven goalscorer.

Our finances aside, how many proven Championship goalscorerkng strikers were actually available? And how many would have accepted a transfer to a team predicted to be  lose to relgation after being in relegation form for much of last season.

think we're all disappointed with the mismanagement of the Ashton era but it is what it is and we cna only move forward, gettkng behind this group of players while they're the ones we have and playing a waiting game until a) our finances improve and b) our attractiveness to other players rises.

We certainly are very frustrating to watch at the moment.

Great one game, utter crap the next.

We needed a proven striker at the start of the season desperately and we didn’t get one. We lack any cutting edge up front.

Absolutely hilarious comment. How many "proven" strikers were available in the last window and how many of them were in our price bracket?
