pride of the west
I wonder if the a chorus of 'trollops mother is a ...' came out back then? Or should it have been trollops wife?

22A
This made me look again at the table for 81-82. First year of three points for a win. 1 point more and Lincoln, not Fulham would have gone up into Div 2. Would Lincoln have gone on to the Prem & Europe? Swindon went down with City into Div 4. They stayed there two seasons after City came back up, but then leap frogged us straight into Div 2. Rovers were deducted 2 points that season; why please? They fielded an ineligible player, Stephen Bailey. They were still cheating back then.

BRIAN WILSON
And also just to think , some 18 months prior ( April 1980 ) to this i was at White Hart Lane watching our last game in Division 1 along with about 300 City fans , didn't things change on a rather rapid basis !!!! NATCHER
I went with my late Father and brothers and was in the seating right next to the Town End, where there were plenty of trouble too. My Father had parked right behind the Town End and after the game were surrounded by a group of Swndon fans intent on revenge, it didn't look good for a while until one of them classed us as a 'family', and any threat ebbed away. I have to agree with Bob Houghton, Harford looked poor, but was probably our best player at the time. I remember him scoring with a great header at Brentford the same season. How bad was HTVs' coverage, and how young did Bruce Hockin look?
Red Knowle
Strange times . citys gates by then were 4 - 5 thousand but 2000 away fans at the county ground. used to be a immense atmosphere in that enclosure. following year it went right up in the air off the pitch. I think it was the next year, when we lost (ON the pitch ,I mean, obviously) it went off all over Swindon.
ralphindevon
This was 2 days after I passed my driving test was the first away match I could drive to with my mates, living in West Somerset I hadn't been to many away games. The following years fixture I remember being in a hotel bar in town and the whole place being wrecked then at the ground a policeman not letting me in the ground with a pork pie in my pocket, which I thought unfair. A little later in that crummy enclosure I remember seeing his helmet being pulled off his head and thrown on the pitch, which I had a little chuckle about. As a 17 year old from Exmoor this was such an exciting time and clips like this still bring a smile to my face.

What I found astounding was the old 'so called fans' statement and also the 'what are the parents doing?' Whatever your views on hooliganism, people who want trouble at footie games do support their team and they are all ages - 14-55. That was the case then and still is now. Before anyone jumps on me, I'm just telling it like it is. It is a buzz for certain people. Has always been the case and will continue to be so. Redcliffe 78
1987 Gordon Owen missed penalty against Swindon, then he missed against Mansfield at Wembley, carnage Ashton Park was lively in 1987 if i remember correctly.

Very true, remember it well...a pitch invasion at the end of the game, with and a corden of police with dogs keeping City fans from the away enclosure. A work collegue of mine (Swindon fan) still goes on about it how he had the shirt torn from his back as he just got away from his pursuers on the way back to the train station. Swindon were already guaranteed a play-off spot and City needede to win to join them, the game finished 1-1 thanks to Mr Owen and then as you say carnage! It must have been about 6 o clock before they finally got them out!

I spend alot of time in Swindon working and chat to / wind up a fair few Swindon fans, a couple of which are big lads who can look after themselves. One of them was in the park end that day and I remember him saying it was the only time he has been truly fearful at a football match, 'wave after wave of home fans from all directions' was his comment IIRC. All I remember about that old stand at Swindon was that it came from some military parade ground and I always thought it looked like it was about to tip over for some daft reason. Barrs Court Red
Is that when stan collymore scored a hatrick, Osman wanted him and the board said they wouldnt pay his wages? There was a ***** in the away end that day with a sag shirt on, fitted in well with the scab northern bastards. There's a thread on the swindle forum very much like this one, theircfans saying about the play off game. This carling cup game seems a big deal for them, and it seems many think of us as their biggest rivals.

If I remember rightly, a huge chorus of "what a waste of money" aimed at Collymore from City fans to which he made a gesture with his hand back at them. 20 minutes later he had a hat trick. When will fans ever learn booing and giving out stick to good players usually acts as the motivation a player needs to get going.
sglosbcfc
I remember the City 1 Forest 4 game, as I was walking out of the ground past the Cooper's Arms a big bloke pushed past me, sprinted 20 yards and then punched a guy to the ground, he then turned round to him and said "if you ever turn up at Ashton in a ******* Rovers shirt again you'll get worse". His mate with him was ashen faced and just kept saying "sorry sorry we've learned our lesson". Seeing them bouncing about in the Forest end made my blood boil, but I felt almost sorry for them after that haymaker. They obviously thought that if they slipped a jacket on nobody would recognise them, big mistake.
