Millen Looking To The Loan Market

That may be the case, but if a 'member of the press' had heard about it then that means we must have made an official approach on headed paper and everything- which surely they must have known to be a waste of a fax. I also can't believe that one of the worlds biggest football clubs would think "Ooh, Bristol City have made a ridicuous offer to loan one of our players- they must mean business! Give them the pick of the academy back 4 to keep them quiet"- modern football tends to be a little more proffesional than that. I don't doubt you have contacts fella, but i can't help thinking they might enjoy pulling your leg once in a while

In all due respects, having played football at a decent level, and worked on a sports desk for the past few years for a number of papers, I do have decent contacts. Also as I stated, the interest came from Steve Wigley to Manchester United, who as a current member of the England under 21 staff, I'm sure he would be taken seriously. That said Millen had already stated himself that he was now in close talks with the Manchester United number 2, so I would hazard a guess that we would be taken seriously. Also the progress shown with Caulker last season would stand us in good stead with a club looking to gain experience and establish one of their highly regarded youngsters. Add to that a wealthy owner who is willing to back the club and continues to do so, I doubt it would be deemed we are a pie in the sky club.

Sky Sports News have yet to report the Smalling deal, I'm keeping it on though in anticipation of Rio Ferdinand being spotted at Pieminister for a pre-contract lunch.

Although no one has stated there would be any deal with Smalling, perhaps if you tried reading what people actually write. Although I suppose lunch time at school you can probably only read 2 or 3 words before your teacher catches you looking at porn or something on another web page.

OK i'll put it another way, if Caulker and Spence signed on loan for a season tomorrow would they be in your starting back 4?

My points being, any defender loanees need to train all week with the rest of the squad and even with Caulker and Spence there were times our defence was appalling. Would they be in my back 4 yes of course but yet again they would need to train all week with their new colleagues. A couple hours on a friday of drilling tactics, positioning, whose marking who etc. is not good enough especially when dealing with footballers most of whom would fail an interview at Mcdonalds.

Strikers have an instinct and defenders need to be regimentally drilled.

Although not even close to being at school I don't think that your reputation for posting crap really gives you the credence to lecture others.

Again wrong. Don't you get bored of being wrong about everything? Be as insulting as you like I'm really not bothered. I'm sure you are very good at what you do, and I always wanted to be a sports journalist, but if you make outlandish claims like you have people are going to have some fun at your expense.

Tell you what if the club even mentions Smalling or we sign either of the 2 United boys I'll meet you before a game, buy you a beer and we'll laugh at all this silliness?

If we sign one of the two I would be disappointed as both look pretty poor, one could only get 5 games on loan at Bradford ! Also thanks for the offer, but I don't drink, and with work commitments I rarely get to go to games anymore. Have a season ticket but probably use it 4 or 5 times a year max.

Live outside of Reading, Bristol is too far to go to London everyday. I probably watch Reading play more than City, but as an ex player of Reading's and mates with a fair few of the staff there, I get for free and if they are home midweek, it's a ten minute journey to watch a game for free.

Greg Cunningham - Man City LB. Was on loan at Leicester City last season

This Guy (Cunningham) was awesome for me on FIFA 11. Although the commentator referred to him as Gregory Cunningham but I think it's the same person.

If he was good on FIFA 11 with me at the controls he will definetly be better in real life. Sign him up!

Getting back on topic I don't understand where the money set aside for Andrew Taylor has gone. Was that permanent deal only gonna happen if we got someone else out? It didn't appear so at the time.

So why now can we only afford loans? We have spent very little on actual transfer fees this summer and you could argue that only Kilkenny is gonna start on aug 6th.

We do need a LB and a commanding CB in desperately who can step in to the team straight away, not in a year or twos time. This may mean spending some serious dosh and then trying to recoup the money by selling/loaning squad players later.

While I agree we still have 3 weeks till ko and 7 until the window shuts, we need them in ASAP. With Fonts out of the 1st game and the enevitable injuries we will pick up in friendlies we need to do all we can to start with a settled back four.

I know KM & CS are trying but I hope we are not going to far down our list in the search for the cheap option.

When are you coming to BS3 to say hi?

back to the subject. no one is being impatient or thinks we are a big club. You either havent read things properly or are a complete doughnut.

And then we meet in bs3 and u tell me that your misunderstood !

I do believe I asked to have a chat with you in bs3 and you came up with some excuse about the fact u couldn't make it.

It's one thing being clever on here and another face to face ! (and I don't mean that as a threat I'm a civilised man) but as usual your being complete battered on here by most posters and I'm the doughnut!

Your missing the point. If we go and sign some defenders, then great - I'll take it all back - even if they sign on deadline day.

But all the noises coming from millen is that we need to sell before we buy or sign loan players - If this is the case - then 2 of his 3 signings were mistakes - because they werent desperately needed.

Yes, we do need to sell before we buy, that's always been the case this summer, the players who have come in have been for either free or nominal fee's and we players that for the value had to be snapped up,

As has been said, alot of the defenders that we are after are either costing high fee's or are joining other clubs in a better position than us.

Easy for you to constantly sit their constantly belitting every action of the club, but it's not always easy to bring in the players you want in the positions you need in the order you want, which is something GJ also used to say,

As for "you'll take it all back" no you won't, you'll just find something else to moan on about,

It's all very well saying KM has tried to sign certain individuals, but non of them have joined, for the simple reason we are not attractive enough and don't pay enough.

complete and utter crap!!! Taylor went to Cardiff, it's nothing to do with Money, we can use the two taylor's as a prime example of that.

Ryan Taylor - nearly joined Millwall until we came along and upped the salary that was offered to him and the other end

Andrew Taylor said when he joined Cardiff that there he could have joined another club who were offereing alot more money, we simply missed out on him due to him working with their manager before

Christ... one freindly over and its all doom and gloom.

We dont need to sign defenders, those we have when fit are perfectly adequate. What we need is a composed player in midfield with an engine, and who can pass a ball, to link the Defence with the Forwards...

Everyone keeps on about Caulker and Spence...forget them..to be honest Spence wasnt that Brilliant when he came up against someone half decent.

Ribs can easily fill that position and touch wood he looks lean and mean and ready to rock... He was without doubt the best Player in the First half team which took the feild against Charlton, and I still think carey has another saeson in him.

I dont give a tonkies murd if we concede one or two goals in every match as long as we score two or three.

so the fact that millen has publicly stated throughout the summer that we need new defenders and has made several attempts to sign defenders is not good enough for you to accept we need defenders?

I fully agree. I mentioned it on another thread, what baffles me is the fact we dont ever invest in the back four. Since we got promoted, we spent big wedges on Trundle, Maynard, Clarkson, Stead and Pitman......yet I think all we have spent on the back four was peanuts on Nyatanga.

Why wont we invest any proper dosh in the defence!

Right to the heart of the matter, Andy - an absolutely fundamental and extremely valid point.

...it's the same old shit every season. Excuses, excuses, excuses...

The reason we are in this predicament, is because of poor management. Now we are trying to make do and mend after wasting money. We've gone from delusions of grandeur ( New Stadium, Coppell, David James etc, etc, etc ) to a team trying to stay in this league on kids and loans. All within one season. It is was it is...incomprehendible in my book.

well said Spudski. Spot on.

Would love it not to be the case...it's all a bit sad...

Cheer up Red Exile - we've got Albert and Pitman, probably Maynard.

We're going to score heavily, and likely concede even more, all in all it should be a really entertaining season.

We're not going to get in the top 6 but we'll have enough to avoid relegation, so let's be happy with that and enjoy going to the Gate.

Championship football has got a lot going for it - especially if City are going for it and rattling in the goals at AG.yes.gif

I think it's good that we're looking to the loan market and doubt it means we turn off all resources for permanent transfers but presume further the window goes on the less likely teams want to sell as they are getting ready for the season so if they do sell prices will be hiked. Though I agree with many on here there isn't much chance we'll get such a brilliant player such as Caulker not saying we won't but teams being talked about(spurs, man utd) will give their best young players to the teams who are more ambitious or better locality in our league just being blunt. Not saying won't get a decent defender but to expect one of them to be a leader in our central defence is a lot to ask!
