Aizoon
Yes, several and at both stadiums. It is not that intense considering its size. Fans allowed to leave the stadium at the same time in the eighties, even pay on the day for the North Bank when Roberts put Nicholas over the hoardings. It did put City Rovers into perspective, the Bristol derby is obviously smaller, but more partisan and in your face in contrast. It's different, in that large numbers of City and Rovers fans work together and socialise together. It's more for the wind-up than the punch-up. Cowshed
It's different, in that large numbers of City and Rovers fans work together and socialise together. It's more for the wind-up than the punch-up. It was different in that thousands of rival fans for a derby at Highbury could walk around together at Ashton Gate - Eastville that was unheard of. In South Bristol I hardly meaningfully know many Rovers fans, rarely socialise with any, work with none, played in football teams with none and on that goes. Know more supposed Chelsea/Liverpool/Man Utd fans!!
Nogbad the Bad
I knew Spurs, Chelsea and West Ham were fierce rivals but I've never really seen Arsenal as one yet they are locally closer. However, seeing some of these posts have changed my mind. I've never really got the hate between Palace and Brighton, has it always been there?I don't understand why Charlton have never been a rival for palace? They are only 11 miles apart! Palace and Charlton are very much rivals, Lew. http://www.thisislocallondon.co.uk/news/topstories/3814661.Crystal_Palace_fans_guilty_of_train_attack/ http://www.thisislocallondon.co.uk/sport/football/champion/charltonathletic/charltonathletic/10206350.Crystal_Palace_v_Charlton_derby_trouble_leads_to_10_arrests/
Always Believesham
Theres a couple up there that are quite interesting. I think Swindon v Gills is only anything because Swindon are the only team Gillingham (collectively) dislike The opening Palace V Brum is an eye-brow raiser, hadn't heard of that one! Luton fans have a number of rivalries, the fiercest being Watford but I didn't know so many teams diliked Reading! I personally don't like them but didn't realise there was a rivalry between ourselves and Reading. I expect Reading fans to be more preoccupied with London teams. Oxford singing about them is the only venom I've ever heard directed at Reading. Of our rivals by ferocity I would put Rovers & Cardiff an interchanging top =1 Rovers =1 Cardiff 2 Swindon 3 Plymouth 4 Palace 5 Stoke (Mainly Pulis but usually trouble) 6 Swansea (Purely Eng/Wal; wouldn't say it's a hostile affair) 7 Wolves (We travel well and there is a tendency for a scuffle) Of our 2 main Rivalries I wouldn't put us un the top 10 of the country, however, I reckon both are in the top 25. I think this is all base don the relative success of the teams though - Southampton Portsmouth would have escalated in recent years. Whereas Wigan v Chorley may not hold the significance it did There are some 'local' derbies that are a fair distance a part out there; Oxford v Swindon, Peterborough v Northampton, Norwich v Ipswich, Cardiff v Swansea & Brighton v Palace are all over 40 miles apart The best name goes to Nowrich v Ipswich though, "The old Farm" Worst name; Coventry v Leicester, "The M69 Derby"
Hammersmith Red
I may be wrong & hopefully someone can correct me but I have a fading memory of Robert Maxwell, a long time ago, trying to merge Reading & Oxford in to the Thames Valley Royals!! I may have dreamed this but if true, has something to do with their rivalry?

'Orns
Sorry but Swindon and Gills? First I've heard. Dates back to a play off game in the late 80s / early 90s - not sure of the full story, but they really don't get on!

It's something to do with a couple of Gillingham players ending up in court on assault charges after a bad tempered game in the 70's. I think. Septic Peg
Surprised no one has mentioned Celtic v Rangers (though with Rangers now in a different league, derby games are dramatically reduced. Can I also chuck Exeter v Torquay in there too? Used to live in Devon donkeys ago and a couple of my mates are United fans and they think Exeter are their nearest rivals in locality terms anyway. In the Net
When I was a nipper, Bath City v Yeovil was the fixture my Dad always looked for. Bath City were considered to be the bigger club at the time - just shows how fortunes can change over the years. Hearts v Hibs is usually a bit heated. Blimey - wasn't aware of that Bill, but I know they've gone at it at every opportunity they've had down the years Swindon may have got promoted their last season as well, sure it was near the end of the campaign - they'd have loved that! CiderArmyy
Love a derby with history to it! Also, Blackburn vs Burnley is dubbed as the most fierce rivalry in England Back in 1990 Blackburn flew a plane with a message over Turf more saying `staying down forever love rovers ha ha ha Burnley fans decimated the Jack Walker statue by Ewood Park and of course got there revenge with a message back themselves

pongo88
Corinthian F.C (founded 1882 – I remember it well) didn’t really have any big rivals as they originally were determined to play only friendly matches. They even wouldn’t join the Football League as it was too competitive. They were a very sporting club. For example, if one opposition player had to leave the field due to injury (no substitutes in those days) they removed one of their own players to compensate. One interesting fact - In 1904, Corinthian beat Man United 11–3, their biggest defeat!

sglosbcfc
Although obviously not in England, I chuckled the first time I heard that the game between Inverness and Ross County is known as the 'Cold Firm Derby'. If you are including Scotland, obviously Celtic v Rangers, Hearts v Hibs and Dundee v Dundee United also have sectarian elements to them although not to the degree of the Old Firm. Dundee United used to be known as Dundee Hibernian and Celtic were formed to copy Hibernian as they had raised money for the Catholic poor in Edinburgh. Airdrie v Motherwell used to be fierce but has waned in recent years. St Mirren v Greenock Morton can be very nasty for a game that attracts less than 8000 fans. Always Believesham
According to the A-Z of football hooligans there were a couple I remember now According to the book Reading and us - the first appearance of the CSF Villa and Rovers, apparently Gas "took" the Holte End and for years sang, "We've the Holte End in our hands" I can't find the book and can't remember any more!
