Yesterday Willem II played their first match in the Jupiler League in 2014. After a 4 weeks "vacation" we were very curious how we were on the pitch! Especially since Denny Landzaat joined Willem II again. Denny is now 37 and played 38  times in our national team and played for Willem II in our "peak" years when we even played Champions League. Is he still fit? Will he really contribute to the team?

The match was an away game against Sparta (Rotterdam) as Willem II founded before 1900 and (one of) the biggest competitors for the title in the Jupiler League. Trailing Willem II with two points. On Saturday the leader of the Jupiler League got a draw, so with a win the gap would be closed to 4 points to the leader and Sparta would be 5 points behind us. Due to "safety measures" we had to travel jointly with busses and we were only allowed to drink two cans of beer (0,33 litres). With a trip of one hour it was ......

Then the match itself. In my opinion Denny Landzaat is a real + for the team. He is not the fastest player any more but he played very good and gave lots of nice passes. The awaybox was packed with 400 and a bit Willem II supporters. Who saw Willem II being a bit better then Sparta. But as often Sparta scored the 1-0. Willem II is not known for coming back in a game when the opponent is in front. And in the second half Sparta immediately had two big chances for the 2-0. Then with about half an hour to go one of the opponents gave an elbow to our best defender Peters (who signed for two extra years with Willem II). He reacted with an "Zidane" hitting his opponent with the head on his chest. Both players receiving a red card as a result. This was the turning point in the match. The Willem II supporters getting really behind the team vocally and the players picking this up too.

Around the 70th minute Boymans scored the 1-1 and 10 minutes later the 1-2. He is now topscorer in the Jupiler League. The last 10 minutes (and 5 minutes extra time) were nerve wrecking. Sparta missing three big chances and Willem II missed a big opportunity to finish it off with 1-3. But finally we managed it with a 1-2 winning endresult. Big party of course and I am still smiling right now....

Next week another important match against VVV who is also one of the favorites for the title. With the red card for Peters and a yellow card for our other central defender we will miss them both for this game. We will also miss our topscorer Boymans because of his 5th yellow card in the match against Sparta. A difficult task for Willem II and our head coach for the match Friday, but at least we have had a nice weekend and hopefully an even greater start of the coming weekend!!!!

Last Friday a home game against VVV (Venlo). Away we lost without any chance to win. That combined with the fact that our top scorer and our two central defenders were banned (Red an yellow cards in previous games) predicted a very difficult game.

Nevertheless Willem II began very well and had ball posession during almost the whole match. You could see that we missed our top scorer, because our attacks were quite good, but there was no good finish..... 0-0 halftime.... in the second half we still had the best of the game but not with a goal as a result and then it will Always happen. A free kick for VVV scored with the head 5 minutes before the end of the game... Result 0-1 losing again a match after a great match in the week before that.

We are now 3rd in the Jupiler League. 7 points behind nr. 1 FC Dordrecht. Next sunday an away match against FC Den Bosch. The away box is almost sold out (450). This will be a "hot" game against a local opponent. Two years ago there was some trouble in our stadium during the match for promotion to the Eredivisie. Their supporters tear down the catering and threw everything on the pitch/towards our supporters with a result that the game was postponed for 15/20 minutes. This will be the first time we pay a visit to them since then. Hopefully everything will turn out well and we will return with three points and a big smile in Tilburg. Footage of the troubles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSgCcncJad0 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1bUUeEcyTw

Due to the relegation our head sponsor could terminate the contract with Willem II halfway the season. So we had a gap until the end of this season. A local supporter with a hairdresser company (also supplies of materials with a web shop) decided to sponsor Willem II for the coming half season. A real Willem II supporter. Before a home game a video is played in the stadium and at the end of this intro the players come on the pitch with some nice house music. The video is changed because of the new sponsor and can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXdEg7PNL7E After our game won last week in Sparta we sang for our new sponsor and his reaction was superb (we were singing: Johny Beerens we are getting champion): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1PXm3yKSQQ

And finally a new clip was made showing the new sponsor and Willem II (goose bumbs!!!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elKurRe48YY

This only to end a dreadfull lost match with some good feeling....

Nice to see that people like my updates... Here is another one:

Sunday we had an away game against FC Den Bosch (place 9 of the Jupiler League). FC Den Bosch were in a good flow, since they had won six matches in a row. So this predicted a difficult match. AND: this was a real local clash since Den Bosch is only 15 miles from Tilburg. PLUS: we had a "history" with FC Den Bosch (see my previous update with movies of the troubles). In the beginning of the season we played at home 2-2 against them. A couple of months ago we were told that supporters of Willem II were not wellcome at this game, but luckily this changed so we went with 450 supporters to Den Bosch.

Security measures were immense. We were only allowed to travel by buss to FC Den Bosch. We were frisked in Tilburg to Ensure we were fast in the away box to prevent encouters with supporters of FC Den Bosch. Police let us from Tilburg to Den Bosch and in Den Bosch all roads were closed when we came through. At the stadium itself lots of riot police and police with dogs... Sofar a bit the atmosphere of getting to Den Bosch.

Since the game was played on a Sunday at 12.30, the atmoshpere in the stadium was not perfect. The stadium was not sold out since home supporters could only buy one ticket a person and only when the have a specific personal card of FC Den Bosch. But still almost sold out. The game itself was pretty bad, especially the first half. Both teams lost the ball quite often and not many chances were created. half time 0-0. The second half Willem II was better, but scoring a goal was once again quite difficult as usual although we got lots of opportunities... And then it Always gets quite tense.... Will FC Den Bosch score a goal in the last 15 minutes (as our opponent did last week)? Ten minutes before the end of the 90 minutes we had a free quick at the sideline. The kick was perfect! No one touched the ball, although one of our players (kees van buuren) claimed he did slightly, and got directly in the goal. The keeper expected someone to score with the head at the first post and thus got great over the goal keeper. 0-1 for Willem II !!! The away box exploded and lots of chants about FC Den Bosch were sung. We thought that our player Kees van Buuren had scored the goal and he used to play for FC Den Bosch two years ago and we sang his name often!!! The last 12 minutes were nerve wrecking, but finally the last whistle sounded and we had won the game!

After the match the players came to us to celibrate the victory. At that time our top scorer Ruud Boymans asked for silence and he started a song which we took over. Really superb that was and I love it when you see the good connection between the players and the supporters. After we came back a couple of the players also came to our supporters bar "Den Beitel". Really great lads. When the players went to the dresser rooms, some "supporters" of FC Den Bosch climbed over the fence and came to the away box. Actually they were not FC Den Bosch fans, but from the hell side of Standard Luik (a Belgium club) who have liaisons with FC Den Bosch. One of them carried a flag of the Hell side with him and lost it to Willem II supporters when he got near them. Footage of the players celebrating the victory, we singing for Kees van Buuren, Ruud Boymans starting the song and the stealing of the flag can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdNfX9p50ag

Saturday we had a match against Achilles '29. The are in the last position in the Jupiler League and have a team with all non payed (at least formal) players. Thus this should not be a very difficult match. I think the players thought alike because they played not very focussed. After three minutes we lead the match with 1-0, but only a few minutes later it was 1-1. Later on we scored once again 2-1 (beautiful kick from 25 metres). But at half time it was 2-2. Our topscorer Ruud Boymans did not have a good day and missed lots opportunities to score. Fortunately we had Ondaan who scored in stead of him twice. and thanks to him we scored 3-2 in the second half (with the head at the second post) in the 76 minute. the last 15 minutes were, as usual, nerve wrecking. Achilles could score in the 90th minute by the head when the player had an empty goal in front of him, but fortunately the ball went far over the goal. Thus an endresult of 3-2 victory for Willem II. 3 points in the pocket, forget this awefull game and Friday really focussed away against MVV (Maastricht).

MVV is now seeded 13 in the Jupiler League and has a big history in the Eredivisie. So not an easy match. Maastricht is only 15 km from Luik of which we have ripped the flag last week. So not certain if they will give this match a visit too...

FC Dordrecht won his game very convincing and is still leading the Jupiler League with Willem II in second place with a gap of 4 points. FC Eindhoven and Sparta (Rotterdam) (4 and 5 in the Jupiler League) lost their games this weekend. VVV (Venlo) seeded 3rd will play tonight against Young Ajax. It now looks that the championship will be between FC Dordrecht, Willem II and VVV...

A bit late but still a report from our match last Friday... It was an away game against MVV who was seeded nr. 14 in the Jupiler League, but won against many teams in the top of the Jupiler League the last weeks. Willem II could also win the period title when winning this match. We went with about 150. supporters to Maastricht and safety measures over there were quite big. Police filming everybode and home supporters obliged to show their identity card when going in. This to prevent supporters from Willem II on the home boxes but also to prevent supporters from Standard Luik visiting the match since we managed the get their flag of the Hell side. But no troubles happened.

The match: winning was very important, not only for the period title, but especially for winning the championship. FC Dordrecht was still 4 points in front of us. We started the game very well and after 15 minutes we were in front with 0-1 by a goal of our new defender Jonas Heymans. He is now on two goals out of 2 matches. But as usual scoring was not our best thing (our topscorer Ruud Boymans has lost his flow a bit). One thing lead to another and we were 2-1 behind at half time, with a beautiful goal scored by MMV from 25-20 metres from the goal. Our competitor for the period title lead at that time already with 3-0 so winning the period title was out of the question. Winning the match was now the most important thing. And 10 minutes in the second half we came back to 2-2. The rest of the match we had far more possession and got lots of chances to score, but unfortunately it remained 2-2....

Fortunately FC Dordrecht also had a draw so the difference with the first place remains 4 points. WIllem II is still 2nd with VVV 2 points behind in the Jupiler League. Friday we have a home game against Helmond Sport seeded 8th in the Jupiler League. Helmond is not very far from Tilburg and our head coach used to coach Helmond Sport before he came to Tilburg. So a nice match ahead. Our stadium will have more people too since we have a special "club night". Local football clubs or other clubs could buy a ticket for the match for 5 euro and were entitled to sell it for 7,5 euro. In this way the local clubs could gain financial profit and Willem II of course too. It looks that it results in 3.000 more supporters for this match. Hopefully they will also stick for the rest of the season... Perhaps a nice thought for BCFC too (in case you did not have this organised already).

OK update from two matches of Willem II.

One and a half week ago we had a home game against Helmond Sport on Saturday. With the nr. 1 AND nr. 3 of the Jupiler League losing on Friday we had a great chance to get within one point difference with nr. 1 FC Dordrecht. There was a club night with lots of kids coming to Willem II, resulting in an attendance of about 13,000 people in the stadium (normally around 9,000 this season). Support was amazing in the beginning of the match and the Tilburg Tifosi made a nice banner with our team in the '50's when we were champions of The Netherlands. You can view a short vid of the making here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENOrGQnZHr4&list=UUFzgPQy9DdxvtORFpd1KikA&feature=c4-overview

Unfortunately during the first half one of our defenders scored in his own goal resulting in a 0-1 at half time. the atmoshpere at that time was not quite good... Luckily the same player scored in the second half 1-1. We had lots of chances to score another goal but we did not manage to do so. Resulting in a draw in this game and leaving the gap with nr. 1 FC Dordrecht 3 points...

Last Friday we had an away game against Young FC Twente. A team who we lost 1-2 against at home. Last weekend we had also a big local party (carnaval), so only about 100 supporters of Willem II went to Enschede. About 60 people went quite early and had their own carnaval party near Enschede before the match. Our top scorer Ruud Boymans hadn't scored for quite a time but this match his vision towards the goal was better resulting in a 0-1 lead for Willem II in the first half. Just before half time Young FC Twente scored with a distance shot leading to 1-1 at half time. Luckily Ruud Boymans managed to score again in the second half 1-2 which we could defend untill the end of the match. The match wasn't very good, but three points went with us to Tilburg. Short footage of the match can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fPlD_6j9vs Willem II is playing in black.

After the match the supporters went to Tilburg and celebrated carnaval over there with some of the players. FC Dordrecht got a draw this weekend. So the gap to them is only 1 point!!!! VVV seeded nr. 3 lost their match and now Excelsior (Rotterdam) who are playing very well the last couple of months are now in place 3 with a 5 points gap to Willem II...

Although the last match wasn't that good, we are getting nearer and nearer to the position where we should be at the end of the season. Very important since only the nr. 1 promotes directly to the Eredivisie where the TV money is also much better (yes we have Murdoch in The Netherlands too).

Great to see the victory of BCFC last weekend after an emotional appeal of Mark Dufour Saunders!!! Mark our/my thoughts are with you!

Friday we had a home match against FC Oss. Oss a city nearby and seeded in the bottom of the Jupiler League. Our away game we had won with 1-0 and last week they had beaten the nr. 5 FC EIndhoven with 4-0, so although in the bottom of the Jupiler League still a team to be carefull with.

The start of the match was quite good as usual and within 10 minutes we were in the lead with 1-0. But after 20 minutes it looked like our players were satisfied and the drive to attack disappeared. This gave FC Oss more opportunities to attack, but not getting any good chances. Half time result 1-0. The beginning of the second half was quite good too for Willem II and within 3 minutes we scored a goal: 2-0. After that time the game got from bad to really bad on the site from Willem II. Easy passes didn't arrive well and FC Oss got more and more into to game. Espacially after they got an (in my opinion) undeserved penalty from which FC Oss scored 2-1. And once again the last 10-15 minutes were nerve wrecking. With in the 90th minute a very good attempt to score a goal from FC Oss but saved by the head by our defender in an open goal. And 1-2 minutes later our attacker Mamedov standing eye to eye with the keeper of FC Oss but failing to score too. But in the end a well deserved 2-1 win in an awful match. With FC Dordrecht the nr. 1 of the Jupiler League playing on saturday we were on top of the Jupiler League (at least for one day) which we celebrated of course!

Footage of the match can be found here: http://foxsports.nl/video/197329-samenvatting-willem-ii-fc-oss.html

FC Dordrecht played on Saturday against FC Volendam and lead at half time with 3-0. Endresult was 3-3 with FC Dordrecht missing a penalty in the 85th minute!!!! And thus: WE ARE NUMBER 1 AND WE ARE NUMBER 1 in the Jupiler League. With FC Dordrecht 1 point behind us and the nr. 3 VVV 6 points behind us.

8 Finals left to be played with the following match against Young PSV on monday evening. After many discussions away supporters are allowed to go to the match. Hopefully we will play better than last Friday, because young PSV is performing quite good the last weeks. Lets hope we are still nr. 1 after this match!!!

@ PolskRed: that week will be very important with three big matches. First against FC Dordrecht at home on 4/4, then on 9/4 against De Graafschap (place 7) and on 12/4 against FC Eindhoven (place 5). After that week, it will be more clear if we go really go for the championship or we will have to go to the play offs....

Dezgimed is completely right.... We were much better then young PSV. It was an away game and in the end (decided just a week before the match) we were allowed to visit the match. about 250 people were in the away box and I gues the same amount of Willem II supporters in the home boxes.

First half nice 0-1 after a score with the head of our top scorer Ruud Boymans and in the beginning of the second half 0-2 by Terrel Ondaan, who played a very good match. We had two substitutes in the first 15 minutes due to injuries. So in the end you saw a bit of fatigue in the team of Willem II. Then in the 85th minute Young PSV scored 1-2 due to very bad defence from our side. And in the dying seconds of the match Young PSV managed to score the 2-2...

Really frustrating and lots of cursing in the coach on our way back to Tilburg. FC Dordrecht won their match, so they are now once again number 1 in the Jupiler League with Willem II only 1 point behind them.

Next weekend no game due to the nuclear summit in The Hague. Apparently due to the summit there is a lack of police officers and for that reason our away game to De Graafschap is postponed to the beginning of april. The week after we play at home against Young Ajax. An important match and on April 4 we have the big clash at home against FC Dordrecht the leader of the Jupiler League!!!! (at least at this time).

The mayor of Eindhoven decided that the costs of security by the police were too high. After lots of discussion and a meeting between the mayor of Eindhoven and with our mayor of Tilburg we were allowed to visit the match. But only with busses starting in TIlburg and with guidance of the police the whole way from Tilburg to Eindhoven (about 35-40 km). Lots of unnecessary costs, because of an abundance of police officers and other security people for such a nice and friendly group of 250 supporters from Tilburg. With even more supporters from Tilburg on the home boxes (estimation).
