a picture from the Pulis era

Never to the dark side

Recommended Posts

OK, so I'm not quite old enough to remember the Pulis era in any detail.  I've never really understood why we hate him so much - not because I necessarily disagree with the view, but simply because I don't remember his time here or what happened.  Can someone please explain what happened during his time here that has made him such a figure of hate?

Here's a starter for ten.

Came from South-east Wales.

Played for Rovers.

Accent as horrible as his football.

Nuff said.

And bangs on about how much of a "socialist" he is, yet employed a £1k an hour lawyer to get him off of a driving ban when he got caught speeding at over 100mph, saying that a chauffeur he'd have to employ would then be privvy to transfer dealings.

Proper Karl Marx, isn't he?

****.

Might this explain our current difficulties regarding "transfer dealings"?

Who knows. Anyhow, I wonder if you are confusing "socialist" with "saint" there? And Karl Marx never passed his driving test and/or had to navigate the M5/M6 on deadline day, did he?

To be fair though Tomarse, a loanee called Tommy Black I think hit the post for us in another 0-0 a few matches after those you have listed.

Was promptly sent back to his parent club for discraceful scenes of attacking football.

He personifies and is one of the High Priests of the anti-football Rovers employed (and personified themselves) under Tiny's pal, Gerry Francis, when they dominated (yes! Dominated) us in the late 80s. Set-pieces, long-balls, physical intimidation, organised, well-drilled, low skill (no passing sideways in midfield), direct football, committed, "110%" effort, defensively disciplined, designed to overcome better resourced and more conventionally talented opponents (is this beginning to sound enticing?) we had no answer to it.

Then he had the temerity to bring that here and not manage to overcome anyone with it, resourced or otherwise.

That's a couple of reasons.

He is the High Priest, pantomime baddie of Rovers upandat'em anti-football that even Stoke fans grew tired of. Plus he's Welsh and played for Rovers. And when he says the word "hard" it's like fingernails scraping across a blackboard.

Did he really get £200K for Steve Torpey? That wasn't such a bad bit of business, although it's a shame he sold Akinbiyi just to get a cut of the transfer fee

He did, but he spunked half of it on John Burns.

Here's a question for the purists - If SC chose to employ "whoosh" ball and it meant that City stayed up, would you approve?

What's a purist?

What's whoosh ball?

If you mean "pomo". City do not have the players to attempt that. Fans would do better to support the team here now, than want to emulate a style associated with Bristol Rovers.

You don't know?

Im sure someone will explain. I can't be arsed........

There was a  pomo reference in the earlier post. A statistical style of football based on.% and use of patterns with play less than 3/4 passes. Is that what you can't explain or something else?

Interesting....

In very simple terms - "whoosh" football is playing a target man and hoofing long high balls upto him hoping for a knock down. It's atrocious to witness. Johnson used to resort to it when he was losing by putting BoomBoom up there.......he called it "another club in the bag". I called it shite.

There was a world of difference between Gary Johnson's use of Adebola and the tactics of a Bassett , Beck, Francis, Pullis ...

Johnson's teams still attempted to play through the thirds. One of the above fined players for passing  ball sideways.

I'm no fan of Pulis, never was but any reason you deleted the 5-2 win over Blackpool and the 3-1 win over Bournemouth from this list?

On the other hand you could have extended the list to support your case because we didn't win any of the seven games after the draw with the gas!!!

Bullseye! With concise accuracy like that, you should be writing more than 15 posts, Jack Dawe.

But found time to row from London to Paris last summer, when we weren't signing players, raising funds for a Children's hospice in Stoke!

And, er, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, cycled from John o'Groats to Lands end and ran a marathon for the same charity, previously!

Also a Labour supporter, if that helps anyone balance their views of Tiny, should they wish to do so ahead of Saturday. Not a fan of "New" Labour though, from what I can gather. No word yet on his thoughts on Jeremy Corbyn.

He's still a See You Next Tuesday

I am, so in short...

1. Horrid football.  Launching it long, no finesse, no style.

2. Welsh and ex-Gas.  Not a good start.

3. Horrid football

4. Signed loads of journeymen and didn't play promising kids (we had some then).  Journeymen did sweet FA and zero resale value.  Look at Stoke, only just getting rid of theirs.

5. Horrid football

Oh, and did I mention the football?  It was horrid.

. In July 1999, Tony Pulis was appointed manager. He had led Gillingham to the playoff final only two months before, but had then been sacked for “Gross Misconduct”.  City still had to pay compensation to Gillingham for taking their Manager.

Rovers went top by drawing 0-0 with City. Goalkeeper Mercer and striker Peter Beadle were signed but to no avail. To compound matters, defender Jim Brennan went to Nottingham Forest for £1.5 million. When struggling Cambridge visited and scored in the first minute, Pulis was vilified. Jones equalised but in the second half Tinnion and Goodridge, who had been providing the only sparks were taken off simultaneously and both teams played the final 20 minutes with only one player up front. The 8,000 crowd booed the team off the pitch. Results then improved with hard fought draws at Stoke, 2-2 and Notts County, 4-4.

Five days after losing to Cardiff, Pulis resigned and became manager of Portsmouth. The following day City won 3-2 at Bournemouth whilst Portsmouth lost by the same score at home to Wolves, whose equaliser was scored by Tony Branch who Pulis had tried to sign for City and the winner came from Akinbiyi who Pulis had sold to Wolves only four months before.

I used to live in the Midlands when he was in charge and travel down for home games. Sometimes it would be a real rush to make it on time for a night match and it would be absolutely dire. I think we had something like W8 D13 L2 at home that season - felt like about 8 of them were 0-0. Dark days
