Where next for Cotterill?

I wonder where SC will end up next?

Can't see him staying out of management for long, especially as his stock is pretty high at the moment after last season.

Not that many vacancies about at the moment, he's 33/1 for the Leyton Orient post but I think he could do a bit better than that.

I can eventually see him returning to Cheltenham. Maybe if they get promoted and GJ gets poached by someone.

Where do we reckon SC will end up?

Hi Cheltennham fan here.  We were all amazed by your decision to sack SC and can't see him being out of work for long. I feel he will get a Championship club or a top league one spot, the guy is super ambitious and I seriously doubt he would consider Leyton Orient especially with the owners there.

Apparently rumours are that you have approached us over Gary Johnson. If this is true - I somehow doubt it - then I could see SC coming back here to get us promotion then leaving for a Championship side again.

Just a rumour from a friend of someone who works at the club, I am taking it with a pinch of salt. GJ is getting close to retirement age and if he stays here will very likely win promotion and has a good financial base for another challenge of promotion to league one before he retires. With the greatest of respect if he leaves to go to you he will have a big job in keeping you up but could probably bring you back up again before retiring in 2-3 years time.

By the way the Swindon press linked him with their job earlier in the season and he said no chance he wants to stay here and get the club promoted, you may be different being a much bigger club but I still believe it's very unlikely.

Considering how badly he's just been exposed at Championship level I'd have thought his next job will be back in L1. Clubs down there will be queueing up to hire him though considering his achievements last season.

Never say never to him getting a job straight back in the Championship though - Leeds hired Dave Hockaday FFS so anything can happen!

Agree, think middling league one and above is probably realistic. Could see Sheffield United being tempted if they got rid of Adkins for whatever reason. There's a raft of underachieving clubs in that league that would want him.

After what he did with us, any League 1 side would snap your hands off for him.

I can see him getting the Sheff Utd job if they continue to struggle under Adkins. Which would be brilliant given how their fans mocked us when they got Clough instead 2 years ago

As others have said I'd expect him to be in work again before the season is out.

After last year I'd be amazed if he isn't linked with every League One vacancy that crops up, such as Scunny today (rumour was that was his other offer when he took our job).

I'm not convinced his stock is that much higher from before jointing to leaving us, which would be a right shame. Many seem to consider we bought success and he's just not that fashionable as a football manager.

I think those who appreciate what he has in fact achieved are very convinced by his abilities - particularly saving us from League One relegation spots to double winners the following season, but I'm just not sure that message and the full extent of what he did here will have filtered as wide as it ought to have.

To put it another way; if we were to flip it and he was now an out of work manager and what he did here played out with another side and he found himself sacked after recruiting one permanent, I'd overlook his first half of the season and hope he was on our current shortlist.

Always fascinating to see where a city manager ends up next.  I wouldn't be surprised if he sees out the rest of the season and takes a fresh look in the summer.

I'd expect him to aim for a Championship club again, he has unfinished business.

Not being rude, but why comment then? It's obvious from the thread title what the discussion is going to be about!

Pretty obvious really.... IMO I don't care and not sure why anyone else would. I didn't care where GJ, SOD, Del, Millen or all the rest of them went or are now. Lets move on. Just an opinion mind.

Thread title makes it clear what content will be, why click on it, read it and then post if you care so little?

Talk about flogging a dead horse! I replied because I had an opinion i.e. the opinion is why have a thread about it at all? That's it. With hindsight maybe I should've started a new thread titled .. Does anyone give a sh!te about where Cotts goes next?

And it is that sort of thinking from those at the club which meant/means BCFC has never really capitalised on some of it's alumni, like loaning in players from: Hodgson, Moyes, Millen, Joe Jordan at Spurs etc etc etc.

Not a hope in hell that he'll land a championship job in my opinion. And the chances of him being able to get a league 1 club with the ability to cherry pick the best players in league 1 like we did are pretty much zero. If I were a betting man, I'd say he will never manage in this league again.

Probably end up in League 1 or 2 again. He proved that he's very capable at that level but a bit like John Ward out of his depth higher up the league. His Championship record shows that.

Managers like players have an ability level and Cotterills is league 1.

Current favourite for S****horpe job

Be surprised.

He'd be well advised to have a bit of a rest. Managing Bristol City FC is obviously a very stressful job.

My bet is before too long SC will be managing again in the Championship, and, with reasonable financial backing, will go on to confound his critics on OTIB.

Why on earth would we want Gary Johnson back, and I doubt if Cotts will get a championship job,I think league one is his level.

Our success wasn't all down to him, let's be honest we had one of the biggest budgets a decent team and a good set up off the field. He was part of the success but not solely responsible. League Two me thinks but his ego means he will rather be unemployed than drop down to that level.

Mate, I am (was) a fan of Cotts so you might predict my response to this, but how on earth can you say that league two is his level? Complete bollocks. And that isn't opinion, it's fact.

Most of it was down to him though, don't knock the bloke about just because he's not here now, he did a fantastic job here last season ( and before that) and we should all be grateful for that.

I agree.

Fantastic season last year, absolutely dire this.

I fear anything more than L1 and SC is out of his depth.

Well I won't bash him like some are here. He's done us well and I don't think he wanted to be struggling but his stubbornness was too much in the end. It could've been a much different story if we had signed Gray or Gayle and I imagine if he was manager at a bigger championship club he would be doing well.

As for his next job, I don't think Scunny wouldn't be bad. They seem ambitious enough. Seem small for his liking though. I think he should wait it out though. See what is available at the end of the season and take his pick of L1 or maybe even sneak a championship job?

I have a friend who is connected with Scunny and he tells me Cotts is wanted by them, given the success he had with Cheltenham and us I told him thought he could do a good job for them.

The following is a post on the Scunny fans forum:-

Steve Cotterill

Steve Cotterill would be my choice. Surely we have to go for someone who has proved they can get a team promoted. Many managers can do it once (even Russ Wilcox) but the really good ones repeat it at different clubs. Steve Cotterill has the credentials to push us on to the next level.

If I were him I would pack a case with swimming trunks and sun cream and get the hell out of it for a while. Actually that sounds such a good idea.
