Although Wenger has done very well with Arsenal, I'd say he's probably a few years past his best now.

This is the crux of the matter. You are of course right that he is no longer at his peak but he is regularly getting them into the Champions League and through the group stages, is racking up silverware in the FA Cup  and Arsenal's consistency is unrivalled in terms of top four finishes each year. On top of which, despite their current form, the title is by no means out of reach. It's possible if they changed managers they could do even better but - as Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea have all learned - that's by no means guaranteed. Sometimes a great manager past his peak is better than a manager who has never been great at all and it's not at all impossible to imagine, once Wenger goes, that a time will come when Arsenal pine for the days of cup wins and guaranteed champions league football.

You seem to have forgotten the three times they have done so.

no i haven't,

The last one was 11 years ago, they will never win it under him, he values 4th place above all else,

Arsenal have no excuse they should be winning it more often, they own their own ground have more money then 90% of all other clubs yet they bottle it again and again and again,

If they want to win it Wenger needs to leave and they need to get a manager who will value winning things over finishing 4th place

I feel all we've really established here is that you aren't entirely clear on what the word 'never' means.

Now my advice, when somebody challenges you on what you've said, is not to include a massive factual error in your response.  You've said something here which strongly implies you don't exactly know your stuff.  Read it through again and see if you can spot the mistake...

The 150m was Arsenals transfer budget this season, 9 billion is Mittals wealth... your just being picky for the sake of being picky!!

The problem with the premier league, and arsenal especially, is that between bayern, barcelona and madrid, they have most of the best players in the world, and selling them will by default reduce their level of achievement. There are a few players around such as hummels, pogba, thiago silva and aguero who are legitimately in the world class catagory, and assuming that the bug 3 dont snap them up then your arsenals of the world need to be targeting them. And its only if one of these players fancy moving to non top 3 in the world club that you have a chance if them. For arsenal to improve, they would need to sign one of these real top players, and to be honest, those players just arent going to go there. This is the reason the premier league is falling behind in the champions league, as man utd are in the same situation, and so are chelsea and man city to some extent.

man city spent 100 million on de bruyne and sterling, and they are not 2 world level players to help them to compete with the big 3.

Wengers legacy when he leaves in the next season or so will be massive. A fantastic stadium, vast profits and until the past couple of seasons a tremendous record in Europe, The Premier League and Cups. (Even then he has managed to deliver consecutive FA Cups)  His initial impact on the Premier League was enormous and far reaching, and his discovery and development of a vast number of  talented players over the years proves what an inventive and talented coach/manager he is.  Unfortunately his stubbornness  and obstinate nature has meant that in the last couple of seasons he has became predictable and over cautious, which has led to Arsenal always falling short when the chips are down. But that should not detract from his many achievements and successes over the years.  Perhaps he has stayed a little too long, always hoping for one last glorious season, but after how he has transformed Arsenal……who can blame him.  They are only a quality goalscorer and Tony Adams/John Terry type leader away from a side capable of winning the league. There are quite a few Arsenal players who have not performed or shown sufficient character this season, and have let Wenger down on the big occasions.  Who ever follows him has a hard act to follow………..but perhaps a change of manager is what is needed to freshen the place up and move the club on?

You've now made your massive factual error twice. You may want to do a quick bit of research here. There's a pretty significant reason why Lakshmi Mittal's personal fortune has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on Arsenal's financial situation.

Arsenal have not won the title for ELEVEN years. Don't why you are talking about Barca etc. If Tottenham win the league this season they will do so with zero 'world class' players. If Leicester win it then it will be even more incredible. Surely these two teams have proven to you that spending 50-60m on a player isn't necessary. An eye for a player is much more important.  This is something that Wenger used to have.  Think Vieira, Petit, Henry, Pires.

For the last few seasons see Mertesacker, Campbell, Giroud etc for his ability to find a player now.

He sticks with players who aren't good enough and he's going to lose out to two clubs who have vastly smaller budgets than him and who couldn't even attract players by way of being in the Champions League.

Hey bud i agree with you that arsenal should be doing better, and wenger has been living off past glories.

An eye for a player is great, i have an eye for a player, neymar is brilliant but bristol city have as much chance of signing him as arsenal do. Henry and vierra were some of the finest footballers in the world at their best, and there just arent as many around now, and those who are top world class are snapped up by the big 3 clubs. Say arsenal went for william carvalho, hes a tidy international class defensive midfielder for 40 million, and real madrid went for pogba at 60 million, the gap just got wider. And if arsenal did get pogba for 60 and 6 months later madrid wanted him he would do everything to get that move. Wenger has underachieved but he is no longer dining at the top table of world football.

surely if tottenham or leicester win the league it will be a massive acheivement but also a massive fluke due to the mismanagement at other clubs?

For any club in this country to move to the next level, they need to get hold of lewandowski, pogba, and someone like varane, and that will cost 150 million and thats assuming their current clubs let them go.

Interesting discussion though, i like this kind of thing!

He used to find players BEFORE they were widely known and make them better.  Again, why are you talking about foreign clubs and their signing of big foreign names?  That isn't needed to win the Premier League. He doesn't need to compete with Barcelona to win the Premier League.

To say that Leicester and Tottenham are fluking it is quite incredible.

To say there are fewer players out there now is also not true.  It can reasonably argued that all of these players would improve Arsenal. All low cost.

Mayrez -£400k

Alli - £5m

Vardy - £1m

Kante - £6m

Dier - £4m

Payet - £10m

Van Dijk - £12m

Alderweireld - £12m

Wimmer - £4m

Ogbonnna - £10m

Ha well firstly, leicester have been brilliant but if they actually win the premier league it will be the biggest shock in football in decades, they will have been very lucky that the usual lot, ie chelsea, united and man city have all had poor seasons. Also with the benefit of hindsight any of those players listed could have signed for arsenal, or anyone else and had a great season. We could see dele alli could play but no one knew how good he would look this season and to say wenger should have signed vardy from fleetwood, is using hindsight, no one could have forseen what he has done this season. So to blame wenger for not signing him then is rediculous.

In my opinion, those high end players would have made the difference to arsenal winning the league, which is why i mention it. Wenger going for players like ramsey oxlade chamberlain and walcott when they were 17 is pretty sensible, but he should have been supplementing them with better quality internationals as they were coming through. This is their time to win the league, and he didnt get the top players in he needed and should be replaced if they dont win it.

The list was more of an example that bargains can be had.  If Wenger is still great then he should be spotting these players, like he used to.

At least we agree that he should be sacked should they not win the league!

I expect the 'top' teams will continue the strategy of trying to spend big on ready made players (a strategy not working for both Manchester clubs currently) rather than look for bargains.

Honestly I'd agree with what most people in the thread have said about Wenger and the legacy he's created, influence on the Prem. Think he will have underachieved if he fails to win the league this season by failing to capitalise on the other big clubs being poor, but at the same time, what a story it would be if Leicester win it.

In my eyes this year has been Arsenals best chance of winning the league since 2010(?) when they were cruising until Eduardo had that horrific leg break where he needed to learn to walk again. After that happened and bottling the league cup final against Brum they went on an awful run and threw it away, and not (that I can think of) had a real stab at it since.
