Just about to change my car after years with a company motor. I bought a stop gap (2010 pug 407sw) but now want something better but haven't really got a clue about buying cars.
The Mrs wants an SUV and we don't really need a big car anymore as my eldest is starting lessons himself soon.
Thinking about the following:
Kia Sportage
Ford Kuga
Kia Optima sport
Vauxhall Mokka X
Hyundai Tucson
Suzuki Vitara

Has anyone got an opinions or advice? Looking at something around a year old / ~£15K.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Sounds to me you need some excitement in your life, only by the dross cars your thinking of.

I'm In my late 70s and drive a 1989 Audi 2.2E Coupe on about 145,00 miles serviced yearly, galvanised body, 5 cylinder engine from the 80's Quattro of rally fame and cheap to run and goes like S of a S.

Checking 'howmanyleft' website there are 3 [THREE] taxed and about 4 on sorn for 1989 , my desire is for this one from the Bristol area.:-

He wants something for £15K, and a year old. Why would he put his family in the death-trap you are suggesting?

Cars aside, where are you from in Cornwall. I'm down that way next week and I can drop by and explain how 'Autotrader' works.

P.S. What do you think of Lostwithiel??

I have had 2 coupe quattro's and loved them both, really liked the 5 cylinder engine too.

Don't see many around now which is a shame as i think they still look bloody great.

Not the best spec car i have ever owned but without down my favourite.

Are we talking Skoda?

They are good cars today, but the image is still not right, especially for anything even slightly smokey.

You'll have more cred with a Focus ST than with a bloody Skoda, on a budget.

DON'T DO IT.

Disagree. Skoda stigma long gone from the days of the Estelle, VAG ownership has been the making of them. Under the radar (still), relatively unknown. I'd have one of them over a Focus anyday and indeed the comparable VW product, the bloody awful Bora.

That's a great colour combo too.

Stick to your guns @Ska Junkie, get what you want and can afford!

Have to disagree there, big time!

Skoda's are great cars and like a VW or Audi, they're part of the "MQB" technology. Although also part of it, I'd think twice if looking to get a Seat, unless high spec.

Would rather a Superb over a Focus ST any day.

@Ska Junkie, you may find it helpful to do a little research on VW's MQB tech.

Can the Skoda do a 360 degree barrel roll??

Eh??

No it ******** cannot. The e-pace can, so it is the better car.

Went to the Jag garage today. E-Pace has fixed, not sliding, pano. sunroof. Obviously think the risk of falling out on the 360 degree roll is too high!

Consigned -  like the Discovery Sport - to the nice car, pity about the lack of opening roof option bin.

When will car makers learn to make cars customers want? The LR dealer said 12 months ago he'd lost loads of sales due to the lack of an opening sunroof. Same bloody car making group and they make the same mistake on a new model!

Most reliable car I have owned ( and I have had a few, to be Python-esque) is a Honda CRV.  I'd highly recommend one.

now you are talking sense. one of a few 'original' motors and not a name selling generic turd such as the qashqai which without the shiny badges is basically a tinpot renault. vag group especially the diesels would be my first choice any day of the week closely followed by a petrol bmw.

Purchased an 18 month old Qashqai at the end of last year from Wessex Garages down at Cribbs.  Car looks lovely with nice alloys and privacy glass to rear windows.

Bit we've had no end of problems with it sadly. It's been back to the dealer several times and is going back again tomorrow to fix air con. Broke down on ******* Christmas Day!

Can't recommend it on that basis. But sense we have probably been unlucky as it's  a hugely popular and well rated car.

My family have had several Ford's and they've all been great. So reliable and love the drive. Kuga would be a good shout I reckon.

I'm finally getting rid of my Astra Sri end of the year. Looking at a used 5 door family car. BMW 1 series/Audi A3/Mazda 3 type....any recommendations appreciated.

I drove the 1 series for work a few times, hated every minute I was in it, I personally found it very uncomfortable

Was an opening bloody sunroof in the OP's spec??

This bloke cannot make his mind up.

Looking for an automatic diesel. One with a bit of oomph! About 5 years old...

you wont go far wrong there.vag have had their cheat scandal recently but are still made very well with better quality materials than an awful lot of junk out there. the  engines are  easy to work on ,maintain.i much prefer working on them compared to fords/vauxhalls/ or any french cack. at present,i drive an old zafira, simply because any maintenance can be done relatively cheaply,im dreading getting a newer car, simply because i know how repair bills can escalate on them.im not a lover of diesels but if i had to have one,the pd type vw lump would be my first choice

I've got a 5 year old 140 Golf TDI.  I've had it since a year old, done about 70k miles in it and all I've had to have done was tyres and replace the battery after I went from driving it for 100 miles a day to nothing for a month.  Not even gone through the brakes yet.  It's quick, comfortable and got enough gadgets to keep me happy.  I can't find anything to moan about with it, and probably going to get a payout at some point because they fiddled the MPG tests.  I get about 550 - 600 miles from 55l tank when I'm doing mostly motorway driving.

If you go that route, do not use the franchised dealers for servicing.  Heritage are lying scumbags.  They will literally produce a video report of everything that needs doing - last time they told me I needed all four discs and pads and wanted about £900 to do it when the parts are about £150.  Local mechanic says they're fine (about 40% left) and they've been through two subsequent MOTs.  Find a good local mechanic.

The Golf Tdi is a great car as you say. I owned three consequently and all were 2.0 and 140hp.they all went like rockets!

really regret selling my last one. I bought an Audi Sports which is fine but it lacks the grunt of a Golf Tdi.

Next time I change motors it'll back to Golf Tdi.

If you feel so strongly you were being ripped off at a franchise dealer why didn't you contact Volkswagen customer service?

Why waste my time?  I didn't fall for it or go back.

I am surprised that you weren't contacted by an agency working on behalf of the manufacturer and asked for your comments about the service you received. This is normal practice with a new car manufacturer and they take it so serious that the dealers monthly bonus can be affected. In short Volkswagen would want to know about this

Heritage have phoned me twice.  Once to try and sell me an air con regas for I think £75 (no thanks, it takes 5 minutes and half a £30 can) and once to try and get me to take the car there to have the software fix for the emissions cheating applied.  At my own inconvenience!  I've never had a service follow up but to be fair I only give them the house number and that has anonymous calls blocked.

Ta, for the advice. I do have two very good local mechanics, one of whom is sourcing the used car for me. He said the build quality on the Audi A3 is excellent and has recommended the S Line trim (I use the car for business). @redsquirrel surprised about Fords, my family has had an Escort, Fiesta, Mondeo and Focus over 25 years and never had a break down or expensive repair bill.  Everyone's experience is different though, like mine with our shitty Qashqai! Yet others have never had problems and love them.  I'm sure Golf's are great being part of the VAG group but just prefer the look of the A3 and looking for 170 or 184bhp :kiddie:

the fords you mention were fords and not another car with a ford badge except the focus which was shared by mazda. (later mondeos also posed as mazda 6s or vice versa) take a look at the jag diesels going back a bit and compare that to the dirty mondeo dervs.apart from some flash trim and funky air intake, there isnt much difference because they are the same thing. new small fords are fiats now,i was horrified to see an old school fiat fire engine in a newish fiesta.will do the ford name no good at all.

do people know now when they buy a new fiesta, they are actually buying a fiat punto??

20 min commute to work along main roads, weekend motorway trips, usually just the two of us, no kids as yet but possibly during the ownership of the next car. 12k miles per annum at a guess.

As the normal journey is a 20 min drive, I would not recommend a diesel. Especially on those colder days. Some Diesel engines won't even get to peak performance in that time frame; this is reflected in a hindered performance of the 'cat', leading to a increased chance of high cost repair and also potential for long term (and again) on-going performance related faults/issues.

As for the Q3, I'd also say to consider a Tiguan.
