I think when the big German plays he is magnificent.  Reckon he deserved a chant.

My German references are pretty scant but how about this to the tune of 99 Red Balloons?  Simple and uses a bit (or alot) of German to make the big fella feel at home and know he is appreciated...

Thir-ty One, Jens He-gel-er,

He is effing wun-der-bar.

Thir-ty One, Jens He-gel-er,

He is effing wun-der-bar...(repeat)

Or if we want to go all out German...

Ein-und-Drei-zig, He-gel-er,

Er ist Ver-dammt wun-der-bar.

Ein und Drei-zig, He-gel-er,

Er ist Ver-dammt wun-der-bar....(repeat)

Bet we'd be the only club with a German chant and a change from the usual two world wars and one world cup nonsense. Though maybe Huddersfield have beaten us to it with all the Germans they have?

For the young uns...

Hope so.  That's the frustrating (in a good way) thing at the moment, I'd want to pick about 16 players each game.

Its like asking me which if my kids I love the most!!!

I wouldn't know, try to avoid the prem.

Jens....most underrated player at the Club imo...love watching him play. Does everything with a languid style and composure, and still has time on the ball. And covers ground deceptively quickly...Sign of a good player.

I would give that award to Joe Bryan

Really? People go on about him all the time....Yet in an interview with him on the weekend, he quotes that the Birmingham offer, was the first time another Club had given any firm concrete interest in him.

Not by me @spudski.  Agree with that plus good tackler, and his strength holding off strikers has improved (although he takes holding a bit literally).

Still don’t think most realise how good he is, despite giving him a lot of credit.  Could play mid table premier league now

He wins a surprising amount of headers too. I'd actually prefer him with Baker as my CB partnership.

I think he has a lot to learn re positioning still. Think he's got the brain and fitness...not sure he's up to speed on where a LB should be when defending sometimes. May make it though imo.

I think that nowadays you can say that about a lot of premier league full backs which is why I think he is ready now

If that's the case, Prem teams will come calling in January. Can't see it myself yet.

How many times do teams not sign players of ability only to then try to sign them for 2/3/4 times the price one year later when they finally realise how good they are.  Poor scouting and poor ability to judge a players ability to play at a certain level.

When I first saw Patrick Viera 'live' I couldn't believe how he exploded into life whenever the ball came within 10 yards of him....lightning quick and sharp despite jogging slowly the rest of the time. It totally changed my opinion of him, he didn't waste or use energy until he needed it, and then he was simply world class....Jens has similar traits, hope he progresses to be half the player!

I agree with you, Jens is a class footballer....couldn't believe the criticism he got from some last season....

Dont get me wrong, I am a fan of his when he is played in the correct positions that utilise his strength.  However, one reason he got criticism was due to his languid display against Fulham at home. I know the team was poor but he strolled around miles off the pace.

So you are saying if JB doesn't play in the Prem, it's down to poor scouting?

If JB was as good a LB as you are making out, then other Clubs apart from Birmingham would be making offers.

Yep, fair play, Fulham at home was an incredibly low point of last season....not many City players emerged with any credit, and Jens' natural 'relaxed' style made him look worse than he actually is, if that makes sense?!

Him and Pack can consider themselves very unlucky not to start every game. Both absolute class when they play

I could name a fair few full backs in the Premier League that Bryan is ahead of now

Hegeler is very much seen as a CB it seems, he's unlucky we have so many, has been excellent this season. Oozes class with the ball at his feet and his aerial defensive work has gotten much better, example being the way he muscled attackers when the ball was falling in the air.

He’s probably the sort of player who’s be perfect as a ‘regista’ (to coin an FM term).

Between the lines of defence and midfield setting the tempo. Don’t think our current system would needs that though.

Here is Jens Hegeler scoring a 90th minute winner in the Champions League past Claudio Bravo.

Your post was looking good, until you mentioned it was past Claudio "I don’t make saves but i’m good with my feet" Bravo. I reckon Juliet Bravo would’ve made more saves!

I totally get that and probably agree.  Although 2 of our back 4 not marking meant they overloaded us in the middle.

My question back, based on his experience and level he played at is:

- was he using his experience to not go haring around, pressing lost causes, to conserve energy, keep a basic shape?

I don’t know, just throwing it out there.

Perhaps he should’ve been leading, organising, sorting out those lazy effers who weren’t doing their job.  Perhaps he tried, Perhaps it got lost in translation?

I sound like I’m making excuses....i’m Just trying to fathom out why we were so poor that night.  I don’t think Jens was the only one who looked below par.

I would say he is at least as good as

Tyrone Mings

Gaeton Bong

Alberto Moreno

Scott Malone

Aaron Creswell

Better than Neil Taylor who has dropped down to Championship but played many games in it for Swansea

People will probably ridicule me for Cresswell as he has been around England squad but dont let that cloud your judgement, awful defender

I'd agree with that, however I'd also say if we were to play someone in that role that Pack would be more likely to play it, every game it seems he's the one who controls everything when we've got possession in our half.

I'd argue against the ones in bold, Cresswell, it may just be fluke with me but when I've seen him in games on tv has generally played alright.

Seems to lack concentration and positional sense for me.  Moreno great going forward but woeful defending and i think me and you can cross better!

All about opinions though!

Very much all about opinions, however I think if either dropped down to championship level you'd see them being a level above the rest in the league, have to remember while they may have their flaws they're playing against better opposition where Joe could easily struggle if moving up to that standard, last season your description of Cresswell could easily have applied to Bryan as well at championship level.

he hasn't got a long contract, he is one of the lowest paid first teamers on our books,  he was statistically the best left back in the league last year and is up there again

I'll put money on him playing in the prem ot top 3 championship team in Feb. He would be worth a punt for any club for 5 million and 20 grand a week

I'm sure you're right, but nevertheless it's good to see the bloke getting some well-deserved recognition. I accept that with the team doing so well it's hard to see who you would leave out to accommodate him, but the fact remains that he is a bloody good footballer who is extremely unlucky not to have had more game time. His versatility may be his own worst enemy. I personally think he is first and foremost an outstanding holding midfielder,  rather than a defender, though he also has plenty of ability and experience at the back. Tough to omit Brownhill, Smith or Pack, but they will all need rest at some point and at the very least I would be using him more off the bench late on to help him stay match-ready. I think it would be a mistake and a cause for regret if he were to be allowed to move on for lack of opportunity.

I think LJ see's all the positives in Jens, it's just getting the players around him to do their job as well, and them be reliable at doing it.

I'd love to see Jens and Pack together in CM...but would I be confident in our wider midfielders being up to speed with their heads just yet?

Don't get me wrong....they are getting there, but still learning to some extent.

Sometimes footballing brains see things a lot quicker than those in the rest of the team. Pack and Jens both have good footballing brains. Sometimes quicker than those around them.

I've seen it before in teams, where others will make the better player look daft, because their brain isn't as quick.

Same can be said of technical ability. Sometimes a better player will make a pass to another player, expecting them to do something, but they just aren't good enough to do it, and make you look stupid.

I remember reading an article by Glen Hoddle who struggled at first with coaching, as he just expected players to have the same natural ability, technique and brain as him. Asking them to do things that came easy to him, but impossible for them.

You can have a great player and a great coach that are used to superior play, but they will look complete idiots if everyone around them isn't as good.

Slightly exaggerated...but you can get my sentiment.
