Ooh look!!!! Next stage of AG redevelopment now announced

The thing is that this development is not just about sport, it's about having a venue for conferences & exhibitions. That's why there is a link between the arena & the ground, plus the hotels and car parks.

The interesting thought is whether it completely undermines Marvin's plans for arena island. The city won't need 2 major conference and exhibition centres with hotels etc.

So perhaps a larger music venue arena next to Temple Meads is a better option after all. The problem is that Marvin has no money for it, that's why he pulled the plug!

Perhaps Marvin pulled the plug because he was obviously aware of SL's plans. As you say there is no need for 2.

Why isn't there a need for two?

Can only have one event on at any one time. If you have boxing or basketball on in one, then you can have One True Voice playing at the other.

A number of other cities have more than one arean.

The plans look great, even more impressive than I expected. As others have said it’ll be perfect for concerts as well as other events like boxing and darts.

I’d love it if Bristol Sport got involved in local boxing and maybe opened a gym and got a stable of local boxers together. I know the club have held boxing shows in the Dolman before and they are always popular with corporate types. It would take a while to bear fruit but it would be brilliant to have a local fighter headline the arena or potentially even the Gate if they became really successful.

we have a unique fan base and don't have aspirations of grand urge like they do

How do Bristol Rovers fans manage to go through life being quite this stupid.

Can they even read, or do they just mimic sounds they hear other people say?

On core! On core! ? Definite sense of day jar view here.

I will add one word of caution, though it's excellent news about the redevelopments!

The leisure thing is excellent and may well work, but other clubs have done this in the last 10-20 years and in some cases their leisure/hotel facilities have run at a loss!

Several things work significantly more in our favour with hotel facilities versus other grounds that added adjoining hotels:

- it will be alongside large scale conferencing facilities (we already have multi day conferences in the concourse as it is, this will only get bigger). The more national/international the events, the more delegates and attendees all want to stay on site.

- Bristol itself has a distinct lack of hotel rooms compared to other cities and can often be at capacity at peak times, not just in the summer but even when there are events in Cardiff. It is no secret that the city can easily sustain more hotel rooms.

- There isn't really any real hotel complex in South Bristol serving a quarter of the city, closest is Mercure in Redcliffe, and there was talk of building a luxury one in the new Wapping Wharf space (also on the basis Bristol is crying out for hotel rooms).

- This hotel complex would be in the 'airport corridor' a snazzy phrase I've just made up to illustrate that some people will want to stay within the city but closer to the airport for an early start. We could pick up airport business as a nice compromise option.

- Preferred and primary hotel for the Balloon Fiesta and Upfest, each of which bring skilled people from around the world and overall footfall in the hundreds of thousands.

- Perfect for all the away fans and media once Lee Johnson has taken us to Europe. Ditto Rugby.

Take your point but I just don't see the need IMO.

Interesting.  But that wouldn't prevent local residents objecting would it?  I don't really know why they would, but they have form for small mindedness...

Only possible legitimate objection would be an increase in traffic and whether there is enough car parking.  If the proposals involve more car parking spaces that can be utilised on match days, most local residents will be happy.  Transport is the key thing though.  If they can get a train running to and from Portishead and the Metrobus being used more, it should alleviate problems.

and get rid of those bl***y traffic lights outside where the old Mercedes garage used to be, do my head in on match days, they are almost single hand idly responsible for all the traffic problems around the Cumberland basin.
