Millwall in trouble again

You need a charity to 'fight' homophobia? Really?

Are you honestly trying to say with a straight face that the Sydney Mardi-Gras is for Charity?? ??

Oh my days!

I honestly don't know anyone, in this age of gay marriage that gives a shit about people being gay

I thought it was illegal to vilify someone for their sexuality. Let the Police do their job if someone cares enough to report it.

A classic example of the money to be made by being outraged.

PS: there is a common theme to the countries where homosexuality is punishable by death - living in China as you do, I'd imagine you'd pick that theme up pretty quickly.

Obviously, there is a huge commercial aspect to Sydney pride, and it is often an excuse to get wasted and party, but aren't most things these days? Of course, charities and awareness groups like Stonewall still have a massive presence and much of the funds raised do go to campaigns to stop hatred. You'll just have to take my word on this!

Many countries in the world still punish homosexuality. Here in China, young gay people that I know feel no hope in a society that essentially rejects them. Just because things are mostly OK in the UK, that doesn't mean we shouldnt push for hatred to stop in other countries.

I just cannot get my head round why people would have an issue with something that aims to highlight and fight these injustices. In an ideal world, it wouldn't be needed but we aren't quite there yet.

On another note, I don't understand why anybody would ever go on their site or advertise a link to their site. Pure scum.

Was the first link I found on the subject- so there we go. I googled "Millwall behind closed doors" and no other link came up.

@Moor2Sea Maybe, maybe not. On this issue though, at the very least they should have been removed and banned by police and stewards for chanting what they were, wonder why they were not- can only assume public order risk, Yeah they are banned now but no ejections at time?

On another note, using knives is incredibly cowardly. Not a fan of football rucks myself, but knives....

Following City at Millwall I was surprised at how much the Millwall fans 'owned' the ground and how police and stewards just stood back and let them get on with it.

The away fans on the top tier are basically inaccessible so there is no possibility of direct confrontation in the ground but constant hand gestures, charging over netting etc. are accepted with little or no intervention.

There seems to be a very high tolerance to aggressive behaviour in the stands at the Den that would not be accepted elsewhere - certainly not at AG.

Note how even for the FA Cup, where the away allocation should be 15%, the bottom tier was left empty. Hard to believe the top tier holds 3k so it may well be Everton were not given their full allocation because the authorities knew that the chances of severe disorder were too high if they put Everton fans in the lower tier.

Went back in April- know what you mean!

As you, me and anyone who has been there would know, Millwall...is a unique away day in the UK. Would even say ownership of the runup to the ground and the area- because the closest pubs you can drink at i.e. away designated areas all the way out in London Bridge (of course, some will take their chances closer to the ground but they are looking for trouble or very naive IMO)! Better yet, there is a separate covered walkway all the way from South Bermondsey station to the away end! 'Coward's Walk/Coward's Way' I believe it is named by Millwall fans. Installed since 2002 after a full scale riot in the area following a playoff loss to Birmingham.

Surely would not be tolerated elsewhere as you say.

Read that bit too, saw it on FSF Faircop the stuff about the allocation- away sides seldom if ever get the lower tier too, presumably due to said safety risk?

What is the latest on their stadium being sold for housing or something similar?

I read quite a lot on this some years ago, but it seems to have gone quiet.

I know I could probably research this on the Internet, but I read from your posts that you now live locally and socialise with some MIllwall fans, so thought you might be able to provide some up to date news.

The threat is still there but in theory the compulsory purchase order is dead. We had mayoral elections last May and Labour had lost a lot of credibility over the issue and the outgoing Labour mayor had been implicated in cronyism over this, so all the other parties were campaigning against the CPO as a play for votes.

In the end every candidate was promising resolution with Millwall so Labour won at a landslide (again). The new guy is a young Corbynista (ex Bristol too I think, or at least Bristol University) and he is making the right noises about working with all parties and I think has now met with Millwall several times this season.

Critics point out he was part of the Labour council who voted through the previous mayors CPO, so cannot be trusted. This is fair but there's more to it in my mind - as in my prior post, Millwall's right wing identity are people who travel in - the area, largely non-Millwall, is very left-wing (my ward their sixth safest in the UK).

So while there's no doubt the prior mayor was up to no good regardless of his politics, I just don't think there will ever be much middle ground between Millwall fans and the council. But in any case the issue has got so much attention, there is no way that land gets sold out from under Millwall without their involvement.

Where I go a little off the local narrative on this, is Millwall's role in this. The area around the ground is a dump (literally - I go to the tip there) and undoubtedly needs a massive regeneration project - I suspect that alone would help change the Den experience and perhaps usher the club into the 21st century and dilute the edge.

The third party regeneration project that started this whole mess was poorly handled from a community perspective, but Millwall's protestations that they want the right to re-develop the area themselves seem a little hollow to me. Where are their plans? They still have a cafe in a shed, derelict land and barbed wire fences.

The area desperately needs a plan and while it's wrong for some private company to come in and take over land Millwall leases, where is Millwall's plan to sort the mess out? This season they finally appointed architects but the promised planning application by December hasn't materialised and no one even mentions it.

If I was being particularly uncharitable, I'd say Millwall is a stagnant club that lacks leadership and is no particular rush to transform the Den. They seem happy with the status quo/tradition on many fronts and so are belatedly reactionary to everything (redevelopment, racism, etc). That suits the fans that travel in just fine...

Not over enthused by Brexit myself but at least it has emboldened the Home Secretary to state most trying to enter the country are not  ‘asylum seekers’ but illegal ‘economic migrants’ something that before the debate no politician was ‘brave/honest’ enough to say.

Yep, it's not like we didn't all know that and it's refreshing to hear someone in a position of authority acknowledge it, however belatedly.

Things are a bit different from when Sajid Javid's own father came here. In the early 60's Britain's population was 52.4m and it's risen to 66m+ today, and constantly on the rise - the vast majority of the extra 14m being in England of course.

We can't just accept the horrendous projected population forecasts for England as inevitable - an ever increasing population, and the extent it impacts negatively on so many areas of life - cumulatively reducing the quality of life for all - should be a major political subject.

Probably the major one imo., and honesty and plain speaking is required.

This isn't the political forum but I can't let nonsense like this pass. See the link below. Accepted asylum cases are running at c.20k a year, to blame them on a 14m population rise has no basis in logic.

Totally, and let's maybe remember Everton's track record for using knives themselves - don't think there's a british club that comes close to their reputation and form for stabbings.

Clearly, that doesn't make this right and I feel really sorry for the lad who has been slashed up. I sincerely hope that the Millwall lad responsible is sorted out very firmly 'in-house' so to speak, or experiences something wickedly bad happening to him in the not too distant future. Such a scummy thing to do.

Spot on. Problem is, the time for debate has past. The damage of high population growth, fuelled in part by immigration and high migrant birth rates, is irrecoverable.

We have one of the highest population densities in Europe, indeed the world. The impact on our eco-systems has been dramatic and catasphoric. We are now dependent on unsustainable industrialised (and immensely cruel) farming techniques and still have to import 40% of our food.

The ‘compassionate’ snowflakes seem to have a blind spot as far as environmental and animal welfare implications of population growth are concerned. The Greens from sound beginnings have turned out to be the biggest frauds ever.

I’ve given up battling now as swimming against the tide of human self interest and trying to be heard in terms of speaking for things that have no voice is impossible. Don’t think future generations will be thanking our snowflakes though, however ‘compassionate’ they think they are.

Rant over.

Up the City and despite my strongly expressed reservations over LJ/MA a few weeks ago I always though they would lead us to FA Cup Glory in 2019!

I didn't mention anything whatsoever about asylum seekers. I was agreeing with @Moor2Sea when he welcomed Javid's honesty in calling illegal economic migrants what they are.

FYI I am very much in favour of giving asylum to all those in genuine need of refuge.

I went on to give my view about population rise in Britain in general, and England specifically.

Nowhere did I say it was due to genuine asylum seekers.

You bolded this part of the quote

not  ‘asylum seekers’ but illegal ‘economic migrants’ something that before the debate no politician was ‘brave/honest’ enough to say.

And then sought to talk about the population increase. Apologies if I got it wrong but it's hardly a leap and a jump to think that was what you were saying.

Can't agree unfortunately. Whilst I obviously don't condone a knife attack, the lad went looking for trouble and found it. It's Millwall, they've got a reputation for a reason.

Sorry, he's either naive or stupid (or both) I have no interest in violence but I'm aware enough to know that most hooligans these days, especially in the knife capital of the country, are likely to have a weapon on them. Completely avoidable situation and now he has to live with that for the rest of his life. Hopefully he'll learn his lesson and it's one less neanderthal that us decent supporters have to worry about encountering.

Of course, the attacker should get what's coming to him, I'm not excusing his part in it - just have no sympathy for the victim.

Indeed, and one point that has not been mentioned (unless I have missed it) is that Sajid Javid was actually born in the UK (Rochdale) and his family were not 'illegal immigrants', but invited by the British government of the time.

That's a massive annoyance for me right now, on social media there are so many Millwall fans who seem almost proud to be able to say "They came looking for it, he deserved it!". If their mentality that cutting someone's face is acceptable in any circumstances then I doubt very much that those same people would need provocation to go out and stab someone.

End of the day this guy's life is changed forever and there is no place for this in football. Anyone found guilty of carrying out a knife attack like this should be jailed and permanently banned from all football, no matter where it is.

It seems a fair old leap imo. You seemed to be confusing genuine asylum seekers and illegal economic migrants to the extent you were labelling my post as 'nonsense'.

Sajid Javid, @Moor2Sea, and myself were simply making the very obvious distinction between genuine asylum seekers - who are welcome, as they always have been - and illegal economic migrants - who by definition are not.

Population increase in England, and anything that can be done to allay it, is where my main interest in the subject lies.

He was certainly in the mix throwing punches

If he was carrying the blade (And I don’t see that atm) then zero sympathy , in fact good riddance

Not so mate. I think he was just punching a bit crap. There is a very slow motion film of it I saw last night where the git in the cap clearly does the deed.
