Han-Noah Massengo

This is going to be pretty controversial, or is it? Han-Noah Massengo, in my humble opinion is one of the most overated Bristol City players in history!  Can someone actually explain to me what he brings to the table?

I don't want this to turn into a slagging match, as maybe I just need to be educated. This is how I view it. He has 1 good game in every 10. He doesn't score goals, he doesn't assist. He doesn't want to be here and is refusing to sign a contract. Granted, he runs around a lot, but he also constantly loses his man. I just don't get him as a player and why the fans love him.

If his name was Paul Smith, had a short back and sides haircut, and we'd signed him from Doncaster, the fans would be screaming blue murder.

@DavefevsHave you got any stats on him and how he ranks against other midfielders in the league? I'd bet bottom dollar that even Bakinson has better stats for City.

Am I missing something?

Not controversial at all, there have been many threads on here denigrating the abilities of someone who has been a developing teenager for most of his career here. You are not alone.

I would say that if he was Bristolian and had come through the whole of the academy, most of those who castigate him would be excited about how he has done.

If we said this on FBC our usual critics would say this is our latest target for scapegoating!

Loved Lezz's comment on Saturday's episode when he said "take away the wig, I mean hair, and he reminded me of Neil Kilkenny!" Made me laugh and, in fairness, HNM runs around a lot more.

That is a good point, he has been here a long time, and was very young when he joined us. The arguing point is, when you compare him the the likes of AS, AS and TC who are also of a similar age, they're all producing the goods.

Let's compare him to Semenyo, who is 18 months older.

In 2019-20, Semenyo really struggled to make an impact on this level.

By 2020-21, he was playing reasonably regularly and producing moments of excitement but was wildly inconsistent, many thought he was not good enough and he struggled to score goals.

It's a massive change in a short space of time. Massengo is now around the age that Semenyo was mid-way through 20-21. He needs to be more consistent, he needs to get more goals and assists and he needs to start realising his potential but it is far too early to write him off.

It's the use of absolutes, that gets me with these kinds of posts, yes he is yet to score, although it's not for the want of trying and could be argued that's not part of his game. But he has an assist this season and 4 last season despite not starting regularly, and it's often his driving runs that create the opportunities. I also don't believe he doesn't want to be here, I think that there is a lot of pressure being put on him from outside the club to manufacture a move, but when plays he doesn't look like someone who doesn't want to be here otherwise Pearson wouldn't pick him.

I can see what you're saying, but you could always see with Semenyo that he was only a small percentage away.  And again, AS and TC have hit the ground running.

I personally like HNM and feel that he is mobile, technically very good and has the ability to go go far in the game. However, the number 1 issue that will always cause this debate is lack of consistency. His performances against Luton and Cardiff were very good & then he follows that with anonymous displays against Wycombe and Blackpool. Whilst young in age, he has enough match experience  for us to expect a higher level of consistency.

Would personally always have him in my starting 11 but can understand the frustration.

I didn't realise you could do that. So please accept my apologies.

I'm a bit confused as to why you're being so rude though. Are you okay?

Think it's more the fact that this debate had been done to death, with people having valid points on both sides of the argument.

He is definitely mobile, and technically can be good at times, but like you've said it's the consistency. I think his decision making is wrong more often than not which is a concern.

All about opinions though I guess and I'm certainly not saying mine is right.

And yet other young players are allowed and even expected to be inconsistent, I think some forget his age because he has been around so long. He also could have been carrying a knock in the last couple of games, none of us know.

As long as Pearson keeps picking him, despite his contract situation, that suggests to me that he values him more than some and definitely more than the OP.

Exactly, and that's why it's an interesting debate and why I like having them. At the end of the day, I trust Pearsons more than I do my own and I will go with that.

It's just interesting to hear people's views, and that's what I love about the game. It's just a shame some people get so angry about it.

Massengo might not play 10/10 every game (he wouldn't be here if he did) but his ability to to hurry teams to play the ball because he chases them down is very underrated. He forces errors especially against teams who don't like quick passing moves.

Yeah, he is like a Jack Russell chasing a ball at times. I don't mean that in a horrible way, as like you've pointed out some teams / players dont like to be pressed so it can be effectively.

I don’t think there’s any doubting his technical ability, my “issue” (whether his fault or not) is that im still not sure what his best position is.
He has the attributes for a ‘Box to Box’ type player with his energy and pressing, but with this I think he needs to improve on the attacking side with more goal contributions.

Are you sure? You're style and use of terminology seems very familiar and doesn't strike me as a newcomer.

I'm not sure what a newcomer should sound like? I've been supporting Bristol City for 30 years and reading the forum since covid, so yeah. Not sure what else to say really ?‍♂️

I've not been on the forum for long. Feel free to shut the thread down mods, I don't want to upset people.

If anyone gets upset with your or others comments surely that’s down to them? In everyday life people get offended and upset at the slightest thing - it’s WOKE got mad.No poster afaik deliberately posts provocative comments.

"Woke gone mad" is it really? Don't be silly.

I would suggest to @Ghost Rider that he wants a stimulating debate rather a slanging match, then perhaps avoid using emotive terms like "most overrated player in Bristol City history", the use of absolutes like "never" or "always" and resorting to comments on a players looks rather than his ability.

What a bizarre thing to say. He’s nothing like Kilkenny. Kilkenny didn’t close players down or drive forward with the ball. He passed it backwards and pointed

After listening to the FBC podcast, I will never be able to watch HNM without thinking of Neil Kilkenny……. The similarities in playing style are striking…. No end product, sideways and backwards passing, HNM has more energy, but he also does totally pointless pirouettes and stupid back heels often to no one…

Has the odd brilliant game, then it all reverts to type… could still make it right to the top if he cuts out the stuff done for his YouTube / agents video compilation
