WBA at home match thread

Recommended Posts

It’s on Nigel to sort out a style of play, formation and approach which fits our players. The current doesn’t at all, and he’s playing players out of position to try so. We have zero options in midfield, a defence full of gaps they are exploiting, and when we do have possession we are so static it’s like watching a charity game.

I honestly hope the formation changes at half time. 4 at the back, Weimann up top with Conway and Wells where he’s most deadly

When’s anyone gonna start questioning Max’s place in the team because of his distribution?

For reference, I don’t think they should, it’s just people were all over Frankie for similar distribution no matter how good his saves were.

Im all about fairness you see.

Probably not even noticed as the rest of the teams passing is just as bad, if not worse.

First half thoughts…. for long periods WBA were in control, when we had the ball it mostly went square or back, we were too easily undone by one good through pass and are somewhat fortunate to only be one behind. Towards the end of the half we built a bit of momentum and their defence looked a bit suspect.

Need to get Scott, Williams and Weinmann into the game more and somehow play through our midfield rather than rely on a hopeful long ball.

Needless to say the next goal is critical, if they get it game over.

All at sea is probably a good evaluation of the first half. Brighter in the last 5-10 minutes but otherwise a non-entity.

Still have an over reliance / preference for going down the LH side even though it is heavily congested. Hit and hope will not work.....they are a taller and more physical team. Lots to be done in the second half if we are to take anything from this game. Get the feeling that WBA are sat in second waiting to change up and speed off into the distance. Next goal critical. A second for them and it's all over.

Let the "game management" shenanigans commence. Going to be a frustrating 45 mins.

Oleary at fault there

Clearly his ball to collect

Very unusual for Max to be so deep....see his positioning later.  I was screenshooting the play at that moment, to explain how they'd worked the LB (Townsend) into space, twice in the early mins.

City poor / WBA v.good opening 25...10 minutes of City trying to get a grip...10 minutes of much better stuff.

Scott looking like he's struggling.

Had some good situations, Conway's shot took a v.good save.

Need a strong 45 now.

Pearson thinks this is our best available XI in this set up.  King and Weimann out of position.  No Atkinson. Refuses to even entertain a back four despite us being awful at the back.

Think we might need to go back four second half, to get a better structure.

We've also got no midfield, when we get the ball there is never anyone in the middle offering a passing opportunity which means we have to either come back or not a long diagonal ball across to switch the play. We have Scott, Williams and James on the pitch and not one of them seems to be in the middle when we're attacking.
