Cardiff City away match thread

That might be the theory but in practice Cornick was dreadful and Sykes was less effective than he was earlier in the game. A pointless substitution.

Cornick was far from dreadful. Held on to the ball several times when it would have been easier to lose it. Linked up well a few times as well. Wasn't an easy game to come in to.

Thought Bell was isolated up front today. Plenty of endeavour but no support with Mehmeti and Sykes both wide. Earlier in the unbeaten run Bell and Wells were much closer together and ensured we had at least two bodies in the box during most attacks. Midfield were slow to support and show for the ball too often as well which didn't help

I think Bell just looked too weak in the middle today.

Bell looks better out wide and Sykes looks better further forward. But now with Mehmeti as well that’s 3 players for 2 positions. I can understand why Pearson thought pushing Scott back and playing Weimann off the front player as per WSM last season but that doesn’t seem to work so well for Weimann with a 4-2-3-1 formation.

The worry is that the goals from open play have dried up. None in the past 4 games and only Atkinson’s header against Wigan in the game before that. Something isn’t working up front and playing Bell as a starter over Wells makes little sense to me unless Nige is using the rest of this season to see how this combination works ahead of deciding what is needed for next season.

It’s about partnerships. We had some, and now we don’t. Wells/Bell worked. Bell on his own doesn’t.

Thought Scott was actually excellent in that more defensive central role, with some great through balls and kept the rhythm going in play.

Pearson's after match comments were spot on. We enjoyed 61% possession but didn't hurt Cardiff enough as we didn't move the ball quick enough and we allowed ourselves to be outmuscled. Losing Williams was a massive blow as he looked our best player until forced off. Alex should of buried the first half header or we certainly should of forced in the rebound. However we conceded far too many free kicks disrupting our rhythm while giving them encouragement. The goals were disappointing as we missed a clearing header on the back post for the first and Max should have done better with the shot from Philogrene (probably the best player in the game) for their second. Losing Kalas was an even bigger blow than Williams and I was relieved in the end to escape with only a 2-0 defeat. Selection should be interesting for Huddersfield.

Midfield and Attack just looked flat. It was infuriating when Zak and Tanner had the ball and literally no City player was showing so they were having to go back. Sykes in particular wasn’t showing half of the time.

Agree, numerous times players moving away from the man on the ball instead of really looking for it, which resulted in a lot of passes across our back line. Tanner missed a few opportunities into Sykes feet who was on the touchline.

Overall though we had difficulty coping with their physicality.

Probably, annoyingly, worth accepting that Cardiff did a good job today. They didn't give Anis or Bell any space to run in to. Going forward they played some clever passes and forced us on the back foot a lot. Like Wigan, they looked pretty organised.

Would seem both sides have benefited from a change of manager.

Nothing fancy but well organised and still carry a basic threat. Be interesting to see what Hudds have to offer in context Tues

Think we missed quite a few good chances to go ahead in the 1st half and paid the price,

Ref was one of Cardiff star players giving them a free kick at any possible opportunity including one that was not, in the lead to to the 1st goal

Second goal was against the run of play and both Dasilva and Max should have done better

Injuries affected us and disrupted any rhythm, not great but perhaps not a surprise after Tuesday,

Cardiff improved under new Manager with a couple of decent players

We didn't take our clear two chances in the 1st half and even the Cardiff manager admitted they were lucky to go in at half time without conceding . I don't think max had much to do In the 1st half . 2nd half wasn't pretty but still worked there keeper with the free kick and him getting sent off too .Cardiff did well to take advantage of being more fresh and playing wide in specific  overloading our left  hand side, which we were dealing with until williams went off .

I do agree with what you said about us missing Conway , his movement and goal scoring.  Look forward to him playing alongside Sykes and Naismith pinging through balls to him too.
