In November 2022 they parted company with manager Ralph Hasenhüttl after four years, he was replaced by Nathan Jones. On 12 February 2023, Jones was sacked following a disappointing run of results during which the Saints lost seven out of eight league matches, leaving them bottom of the Premier League.

After having served as caretaker manager in a 1–0 victory over Chelsea, Rubén Sellés, who had joined Southampton as first-team lead coach in June 2022, was announced as Jones's replacement on a contract until the end of the 22/23 season. Sellés was unable to save the Saints' season, and the team were relegated.

On 24 May 2023, they confirmed that they would not renew the contract of Sellés when it expired at the end of the season. On 21 June 2023, the club appointed Russell Martin as manager on a three-year contract.

Southampton stuff

There are eight other ‘Southamptons’ in the world

It may be one of a kind to those who live in the Hampshire city, but there are actually nine places across the world that are named ‘Southampton’.

Amazingly, six of those are located in North America - with ‘Southamptons’ in Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Utah and Virginia.

You’ll also find two ‘Southamptons’ in Canada, in New Brunswick and Ontario.

The distance from Southampton, UK, to Southampton in New York is around 3,345 miles as the crow flies.

Southampton was the original departure point for the Mayflower

The Pilgrims left Southampton on 5 August, 1620 to embark on their historic transatlantic voyage.

They were on two ships - the iconic Mayflower and the lesser-known Speedwell - and boarded on the south coast of England set for a new life in America.

The Speedwell had leaked on her voyage from Holland but was able to be repaired at Southampton’s extensive ship building facilities near the port’s West Quay.

The fact that the city was a thriving seaport also meant it had everything the Pilgrims needed to buy to prepare themselves for the journey.

However, after departing Southampton, the Speedwell soon took on water again - thought to be either because she carried too much sail, straining her timbers, or the result of sabotage by the reluctant crew - and both ships were diverted to Dartmouth, in Devon.

The Mayflower was not the only famous ship to sail out of Southampton

The Pilgrims may have endured a treacherous transatlantic crossing, but they fared better than another famous vessel which attempted a similar journey almost three centuries later.

The RMS Titanic etched its name into the history books when the grand cruise liner struck an iceberg en route to New York on 14 April, 1912 and sank – killing more than 1,500 people.

Though the ship was built in Belfast and registered in Liverpool, the Titanic’s final departure point was Southampton.

Southampton Old Bowling Green is the worlds oldest Bowling Green, it was first used in 1299.

Southampton was the birthplace of cruise holidays with P&O first introducing a passenger service in 1844. The ship departed from Southampton and headed to the Mediterranean, soon Alexandria in Egypt and Constantinople (Istanbul) in Turkey were added due to the rise in popularity of Orientalism, a 19th-century fascination with all things 'exotic'.

Renowned author Jane Austen had a strong connection to Southampton. It was her childhood home, and she lived there for a significant part of her life.

The iconic Spitfire aircraft, crucial in the Battle of Britain during World War II, was designed and developed in Southampton by Supermarine Aviation Works.

I’m not too far away in Wiltshire. I’m going tomorrow not sure where we are stopping in Soton but maybe a pub ⬆️ or I believe some others going to Giddy Bridge (Spoons) so maybe there. How would you travel to home games train or car ? I’m happy to chat via DM.

I'd be very happy with a point. Southampton look to have got over their blip and high conceding of shots and goals seems to have reduced drastically.

They are still one of the strongest teams but we can be quite good on the break..Scott with his many talents would be very useful in games like this away to top sides but yeah Southampton will dominate the ball probably but we can hurt them on the break with a combination of care and precision.

The Speedwell had leaked on her voyage from Holland but was able to be repaired at Southampton’s extensive ship building facilities near the port’s West Quay.

Due to the unseaworthiness, the Speedwell twice had to return to port having travelled from Holland to accompany the Mayflower. As a result, The Mayflower had to go it alone and took a number of the Speedwell's passengers and cargo.

It actually departed from Plymouth in Devon on 16th September 1620 some 4 weeks after it left Southampton.

FACT!

sorry Southampton- you can't claim this epic moment in history and I hope that also goes for tomorrow.
