But doesn't appear to have any idea about the defensive duties involved in playing in midfield.

He is a maverick attacking midfielder these players very rarely contribute to the defensive side of the game and will normally have 2 holding midfielders behind them to worry about that.   you can't stiffle these players by asking them to constantly worry about defending you tell them to keep a high press in the hope we can nick the ball or to force the opposition to rush there passing and decision making. ( front foot football ) Also known as luxury players because they will usually only play to change a game and make quick forward passes to the forwards around them to put the opposition on the back foot and maintain tempo and momentum in that final third of the pitch or sometimes push up acting as a 2nd striker in that false 9 posisition. warnock did it to great effect with adel taarabt for example pearson did it with Anthony knockaert at Leicester even he was allowed a fluid role in the team usually interchanging in game with there CAM,  illias chair is another one at qpr usually so good at what they do you take the risk with there lack of defensive prowess. You don't want to  nullify there threat to much Unfortunately I feel alot of these type of players are being phased out the game which has now become very tactical physical and more rigid.

I get what youre saying but the trouble is he doesnt exactly light the place up when he has the ball.

We are far too ordinary to carry any luxury players imo.

He wouldnt be the first talented L1 player to struggle with the step up.
