Tough watching this on Twitter , Bell has come on in the 56th & 88th minute.

Any word on how Murphy is doing ?

This is the best bet - Piercy there watching and provided updates. Murphy one of the two holding midfielders and Piercy thinks he did well:

Body strength and box-to-box energy: Adam Murphy's impressive first steps for Bristol City
Adam Murphy was introduced in the second half of Bristol City U21s' 4-2 Professional Development League victory over Charlton Athletic

At the risk of delving into lazy and obvious stereotypes, from 1996 until the mid-2000s, the advertising slogan for a particular world famous brand of Irish stout was “good things come to those who wait”. As Brian Tinnion sat in the lower section of the Dolman Stand, with Ashton Gate bathed in pleasant sunshine, watching Adam Murphy burst forward after pirouetting into space from inside his own half, Bristol City’s technical director no doubt afforded himself a warm smile given how long it’s been to get to this point.

Murphy’s journey from Ireland to the green grass of BS3 has been a tortuous one given the collapsed transfer last summer over physical concerns and then, having secured his signature at the start of January, the 18-year-old was required to undergo a pre-season almost on his own, coupled with some injury niggles that further delayed his entrance.

The bottom tier of the Lansdown Stand was sporadically populated, to say the least, on Tuesday afternoon in City’s penultimate Professional Development League game of the season but it was an important moment nonetheless for everyone at the club, and most importantly Murphy himself, as he joined the game in the 63rd minute for Dylan Kadji.

Tinnion had revealed 10 days ago the teenager would be involved for these final matches of the season, with Fleetwood Town to visit next Tuesday, with the Republic of Ireland international eased into action as he was named among the substitutes.

In what proved an open, end-to-end encounter, as has been the case over their previous two fixtures, Murphy took his place at the base of midfield in a 4-2-3-1 alongside Tommy Backwell.

Stocky in build but with acceleration and athleticism, he joined the game to a shout from a teammate of “go on, Murph” before putting himself about in* midfield with the scoreline reading 2-2 as Ryan Huke had just equalised for the Addicks.

As City built from the back, he quickly dropped into a deep pocket to try and secure some early possession but was bypassed and his first touch proved a tackle, and a show of one side of his game.

Using his body to get between man and ball it looked a straightforward challenge for him to win, but he brushed the man in navy aside with consummate ease to get City on the move again.

That upper body strength was evident throughout the 27 or so minutes he was on the field and the way he tucked his shoulders down and shielded the ball meant whenever he was closed down, he never seemed to lose possession.

In the build-up to Toure’s own goal, it was a loose ball in midfield that Murphy quickly jumped upon, holding his marker off before sending a pass upfield, leading to the decisive third.

There were plenty of vocals as he was constantly communicating with Backwell as to who should be furthest forward or deeper, with instructions at throw-ins and in-play as to who should press, and who should block the space. So too Yeboah, who had taken his place in the No10 spot.

If there were any doubts over his confidence then his decision to neglect Raph Araoye to his left and attempt a left-footed effort from around 40 yards which was blocked off, while slightly misguided, showed a certain sense of self-belief.

But that should no way indicate an individual playing for himself because he was constantly tracking back, shielding the defence and looking to make recovery tackles. Even on the one occasion when he was a little outmuscled and outpaced, he stuck to Pat Casey the whole way, with the Charlton forward eventually thwarted on the edge of the box.

It was from that area of the pitch from which he launched forward, for what proved the obvious highlight of his involvement. Taking a pass in the middle of the pitch, he was quickly closed down, but got his body in the way, turned quickly and then burst through centrefield.

Further advancing on the Charlton area he then swept an outside of the boot through-ball into Thomas’ stride but a covering defender just got across in time to deny the City striker a clean attempt at goal.

As City got a bit boxed in on the touchline at a throw-in, Murphy took charge, running towards Leeson and gesturing for the ball to take in on full and fire a low volley into Thomas’ chest further up the line.

But if there was one moment that perhaps encompassed what the Irishman is all about, it was in the closing stages as Thomas found room just outside the penalty area with City trying to craft a fifth goal.

Murphy had darted into the area and called for the ball, Thomas ignored him and the move broke down with Backwell then tackled as he tried to recycle possession. Charlton countered but it was City’s No15 who had sprinted back to cover the space, getting a toe in to guide the ball back to the defence. Box-to-box in the blink of an eye.

These are but small steps, and next Tuesday’s game against Fleetwood Town will offer a further test, as Murphy will surely be in line to start, before he then prepares to try and impress Liam Manning over pre-season. But the promising early signs, after such a wait, were undeniable.

I didn't start off as Piercy's greatest fan but he's grown on me and that's an excellent piece.

No necessity for him do such an in depth and enlightening report on Murphy's first game in City colours but he obviously realised the interest of the fans and went out of his way to do it.

Impressive from him, and looks like we've got a really exciting prospect on our hands in Murphy.

If only one of Murphy or Stokes is better than what we have got and is a first team regular, then we could be in business next season.

I don't think they are. More work in progress.

Season after once they've been integrated though...

The very best of luck and good fortune to the lads who are playing their final game for City today............great that Callum Hutton scored an excellent goal on his final appearance.  I am sure some of them will get signed up by other clubs, as their is some talent there, but probably a lack of consistency   (sounds like the 1st team?)  I hope they all have successful futures, as it must be weird playing their final match at AG............hope that there are some scouts there?

Based on the leagues they are coming from. MASSIVE jumps up for the both of them.

Is Stokes better than Twine? Unlikely.

Is Murphy better than Bird/Knight/Williams. Even more unlikely.

I'd rather see them play a few times before arriving at an opinion. However, having seen  Murphy's half hour last week he looks very promising, and having watched Stokes in one of the 'Shots cup games earlier in the season against higher league opposition, he also stood out.

A full season at league one (or league two for murphy) level would be good for them both I think. 30 plus games next season would be more beneficial than sitting on the bench each week in my view.

Perhaps one or both of them will turn out to be ready for the championship, but considering where they've come from I'd be surprised

I'd rather not expect them to be better than we have, and if they do turn out like that I'd rather be surprised vs disappointed.

What we don't want to do with them is having them sitting around playing U21 games. I know from other players that have gone from "proper football" at a young age into U21 set ups, that it can be dull and repetitive when there seems to be nothing on almost all games.

I agree. I think they'll train with the 1st team squad, as Stokes already is, and be part of the match day squad.
