That's the first impressive England performance of the world cup.

We've scraped past a shite Tunisia, hammered a Panama who are basically Bristol Rovers, and lost to Belgium's reserves with our reserves, culminating in not beating an awful (niggling, cheating but bereft of quality) Columbia in 120 minutes.

The hype following the penalty win was ridiculous, regardless of how well the chips were falling we'd only played about an hour of decent football over four games.

However today was very, very comfortable and a notoriously hard to break down Sweden just weren't in it all over the pitch.

We now have a semi final against one of two sides who are both beatable, and a real opportunity.

Set pieces can win trophies and we seem to be the best in the world at them at the moment, which is great news.

Now's a good time for justified optimism, it's fairly likely we'll see the best tournament result for England since 1966.

First decent performance? Does the Panama game not count because of the perceived weakness of the opposition? And if not, would the performance have counted instead (negatively) if England had played badly and drawn 1-1? Surely England can’t win there - draw or lose against a weak team and then get slaughtered; win and play well against a weak team and it doesn’t count because the opposition were weak.

As for saying Colombia are bereft of quality - sorry, can’t agree. They reached the quarter finals 4 years ago and beat Poland 3-0 in this tournament. They made life extremely difficult for England on Tuesday and generally defended very well. England may not have played brilliantly against them but that was largely because Colombia didn’t allow us to.

At least Panama know how to build impressive infrastructure ;)

England's ability to put in a good performance was heavily influenced by the ineffective referee failing to get to grips with Colombia's "shithousery" early on.

Don’t think there’s a single player who isn’t humble

A big part of the success - no egos anywhere

Think we will do it now. Sum of the parts and all that.

No other team are playing the way we are. Were not Spain in the passing ,our first touch is not the best. But Southgate has managed to implement the passing game with the power of the English game.

Not a big fan of Young slowing things down on the left, but Kane knowing the ball wont come in drops off receives it , takes a free kick for the team brilliant.

And your thoughts on Sterling, well, nobody can handle him. His balance, movement, energy is second to none. If he can find a finish could well be the player that wins us the World Cup.!!!

I understand the frustrations with Sterling but people saying he's shite are way off the mark. We would be nowhere near as dangerous without him. He breaks lines, unsettles and panics defences with his speed, dribbling and pressing, and creates space for the other three to work in. I desperately want him to get a goal or assist as he's working his socks off and just needs that moment to get everything to click into place for him.

Bobby Reid missed many sitters when he was Sterling's age. Year later he barely missed a chance. He will work on his shooting, his composure, the lot under guardiola, who is a master of improving players. We know he is going to miss chances at the moment in his career. I'd still have him in because he is so good at everything else..

Exactly how old is sterling, you make excuses for him like he is 18 or19, he is trying too hard is obviously a good player but his finishing while playing for England has been terrible, that does not mean he can't finish as he patently can as proved for man city, just please don't use his age as an excuse.

Russia or Croatia is going to be a much harder game, I think we’ve done fantastic so far but we haven’t really played anyone decent yet, and I think with our silly mistakes a better team will take advantage of it.

sorry but shut the f up, getting boring now.

Young slows things down because he is right footed. This means that instead of being able to go past the full back on the outside, he always tends to cut back or to the inside onto his favoured right foot and this stops the flow of moves down his side.

Yeah know that Downend. Apart from Young's corner, if Rose is fit would play him every time.

Everyone's loving England now are they? Funny that.

Club & Country.

A manager most did not want and a group of, in the main, unfancied  and not big name players - let's hope this rubs off on us!
