I understand their new owners are property developers.

Should be interesting when they get fed up of chucking money down the drain every week..

Property developers you say? And just acquired a company that owns several acres of land in BS7, one of Southern England's most sought-after and lucrative locations? Well I wouldn't imagine there's any cause for concern there.

They won’t be going for Test Match status as they feel there’s already plenty of those around, and going after that would lead to building a White Elephant!

Why the lack of ambition? Typical Bristol mindset. If Durham can build a test ground at Chester Le Street, and Hampshire the Ageas Bowl, I really don't get why the biggest provincial city in the South of England can't have something at least as good as those.

Anyway, more importantly, I'm going to have to find me a new gym, after nearly 20 years as a BS7 member. FFS.

All of this. Music had got into a boring old rut. Punk/new wave was like a shot in the arm and changed music forever, and for the good.

On a related note, how refreshing it's been to hear Hurry Up Harry by Sham 69 played pre-match down the Gate in recent games, in tribute to Cornick.

I've said elsewhere, much as I admire Herman's Hermits, if ever there were a band whose songs were literally written for shouting at the top of your voice on the football terrace, it's Sham 69!

On the contrary, I'd say punk has had a massive and long-lasting influence on the music scene. 45 years on, the DIY ethos it gave birth to has massively changed how people make and produce music. Obviously the Sex Pistols didn't last too long (although Johnny Rotten has had sustained a career with PIL and other projects) but a lot of bands from that era had a legacy, influence and often a career that lasted today. I was born six years after punk and have grown up around music and people influenced by it. Not really accurate to say it "didn't last".

Spot on, the shock waves of the punk explosion are still reverberating loud, nearly 50 years on.

The Pistols (and their peers The Ramones, Clash, Jam etc) are as important and influential as Elvis, The Beatles and the Stones. They changed the world profoundly, and indirectly affected everything that's happened since, in a real positive way.

The Pogues singer Shane MacDowan has died at the age of 65, it has been reported. The singer had recently been in intensive care after an encephalitis diagnosis last December.

Such sad news. One of the original punks and a true innovator.

The Pogues show at the Studio, Frogmore Street in 1985 was joyous and unforgettable.

Fairytale of New York to be Christmas number 1.

    Rest in peace.

Yep. He was on the whole album (Nonsuch) produced by Elton John's old producer.

XTC is my Bristol City music wise. Bought all their albums, singles and more. Travelled to see them outside of Bristol and like the City, never made it to the Premier League of venues and TV.

I could give more similarities but I'd end up being 'Disappointed.'

What a track this is and if Andy is reading this...the reason it was never a massive hit was because of the drum rhythm Dave had to play (listen to the demo version by Andy. It's the same). At the end, Dave plays the standard rhythm most drummers would play. The song suddenly comes alive. You want to dance to it.  Just like City, so much promise but....and I'm annoyed!

XTC and Bristol City. That's me!

I vaguely recall in the halcyon days of football chat on the internet (like about 25 years ago), there was a City fan I spoke with on one message board who called himself Colin Moulding. Would that have been you?

    Hi CR.

My extreme annoyance at this gig was because including encore, they were on stage for 45 minutes. I was so annoyed that the following day I returned my unopened, shrink-wrapped October album to Strawberry Fayre in Broadmead. They let me exchange it for Squeeze East Side Story. What an album that is.

Anyway, I was offered a ticket for the War tour. Now that was a gig! Bono climbing up to the balcony courtesy of the stage based PA stack and what an album to promote!

Incidentally, I know I saw the Comsat Angels as a support band at the Locarno. Were they the support for the October tour?

Yes mate, the Comsat Angels supported U2 at that show. I'd forgotten about it being a short set though.

Never been a fan of Festivals, put off 'big gigs' having tickets a mile away for the Jam's farewell at Wembley.
I did go to one real one, IoW 2004 (I think) line up was decent. Bowie, Who, Manics , Charlatans , Snow Patrol.

"Normal" gigs Jam the day after Lennon died was great . TBH the Jam were great each time I saw them.
    Specials 1979
    Beat 1980
    For somewhere I didn't like the set up , the Bierkeller gave me some of my fav gigs.;
TMTCH , Icicle Works, Strypes , Damned , Seahorse.
Belly at the Fleece is a stand out, I love Tanya Donnelly .
The Fleece has been a fav venue for a while. Saw the K's there a while ago just brilliant.

The first gigs I saw were mainly at the Locarno/Studio ( though the very first was Tubeway Army at the Colston Hall).
As I said Specials and the Beat were amazing , but Madness first Stiff tour after leaving 2Tone , Secret Affair and many more. I have to say I'm glad I saw Motorhead there on the Merry Bastard Christmas tour and have to mention ....
Colonel Kilgore's Vietnamese Formation Surf Team at the Locarno. Local band , no label , sells out Bristols biggest venue. Now that's impressive but add, they had big screens showing Apocalypse now each side of the venue and it was immense. The pile of confiscated army kit by the doors was hilarious , helmets and fake weapons. Live they were brilliant but did produce one cracking album.

Sounds like we were at loads of the same gigs then, including all the 2 Tone and mod shows, and even the Kilgores' farewell at the Studio. I'll always remember their followers synchronised dance routine on the dance floor, that was mad!

The Locarno was Bristol's biggest venue?

I thought that held 1200 maximum. Colsunall was 1800ish and Hippodrome nearly 2000.

15 mins later.... just did some Googling. A couple of sites state 2000 including a U2 version which said 2500! No definitive answer though, mind you what is the definitive answer here?

I always thought the Locarno/Studio held about 1,500. Whatever, it seemed dangerously over capacity for that Jam gig in December 1980, it got scarily crushed down the front there for a bit.

Live Aid (Wembley - Bowie was far, far better than Queen, and I wasn't a great fan of either)

    Bo Diddley -Bierkeller

    XTC - Locarno

ZZ Top Birmingham Odeon (Eliminator tour)

Worst gig U2 - Locarno (October tour)

Best gig U2 - Colston Hall (War tour)

Peter Gabriel - Hatfield Poly 1977. (His warm up gig to his first UK appearance since leaving that other band. Only 200 there).

Loads of Dr Feelgood and Thunder gigs.

Dave Edmunds warm up gig at Reading Uni. Featuring in his band Steve Cropper, Graham Parker, Dion (another 200 there)

Like others have said, loads of other gigs. Bristol in late 70s onwards was great for gigs. Never made it to The Thekla though.

Interesting that you didn't rate U2 at the Locarno, October Tour. For me it was a great gig and I remember being really stunned by Bono's amazing voice. At the time, they were still doing pretty credible Clash-inspired post-punk rock and John Peel was regularly playing their stuff.

Of course, a couple of years on they sadly descended into their awful stadium rock phase, and lost me forever ☹️

  9. I've seen some really good tribute acts over the years, not least the Complete Stone Roses, the Complete Clash and T Rexstasy.

A mate was in the excellent Deaf Dumb and Blondie some years ago, but my favourite local tribute band was probably the Rolling Clones, featuring Mick Haggard, Keith Riffhard, Ronnie Woodbine, Bill Why-aye-man and Charlie Whatsit.

The advent of so-called fake festivals and Butlins weekender type events, means there's actually a full time living to be made for the best of these acts. Better than getting a proper job!

  10. Edited to add The Housemartins - Bierkeller, Bristol

Paul McCartney - Staples Center, Los Angeles

    Stone Roses - Bierkeller, Bristol

    The Jam - Locarno, Bristol

    The Clash - Locarno, Bristol

The Smiths - Lanchester Polytechnic, Coventry

Oasis - Old Trafford Cricket Ground, Manchester

    Happy Mondays - Harbourside, Bristol

    Ramones - Studio, Bristol

The Specials - multiple venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Alexandra Palace, London

Big Audio Dynamite - Hacienda, Manchester

The Undertones - multiple venues around the UK & Ireland

    The Pogues - Studio, Bristol

Echo & the Bunnymen - Royal Albert Hall, London

The Rolling Stones - Ashton Gate (ticketless, but bunked in through the East End turnstile block to catch the last 25 minutes)

    Favourite festival weekend?

V2003, Staffordshire - an insanely good lineup that particular year, including Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Amy Winehouse, Coldplay, PJ Harvey, Feeder, Ash, Underworld, Echo & the Bunnymen, David Gray and loads more...

I get all confused with the offside rule now, was he right to disallow that

Yes, it hit Kane. But more to the point, how come VAR chose to check that, and not two penalty shouts, one of which was a pretty 'clear and obvious error'?

Unfortunately, I’ve never watched him play.

I did read recently, however, that his grandfather was a bassist with Oasis.

Totally irrelevant to his football ability, but I thought it was quite interesting.

Probably coincidental, but I understand Gary Ainsworth tried to sign him on loan.

Actually, I made that last bit up.

Yeah I read that too, apparently his grandad is a Man City fan called 'Dave', who used to play bass in Oasis?

Now, maybe I'm having a Only Fools style *woosh* moment, but off the top of my head, Oasis never had a 'Dave' in their ranks, did they? Paul McGuigan and Andy Bell were the only bass players I can think of, plus the lad who briefly stood in for Guigs when he had that burnout, (Sean? Scott?).

So have I missed something, or is Rico's old man winding him up about the whole Oasis thing? Or is it Guigsy living his life with a false identity to protect his privacy?

Whilst its a step in the right direction, let's see if they can maintain this, especially during tough tines. Something tells me that it would then revert back to previous.

All this sudden communication just seems like a PR thing. They've gone from one extreme to the next.

They’ve done quite a few of these over the years, haven't they?

Anyway, it's so important that the 'difficult' questions are asked, and the club held to account, not least for the way they've treated Nige.

BUT I hope people are reasonably respectful towards JL without resorting to the personal abuse I've read on here, some of which has been quite nasty and out of proportion. I'm sure it will be fine in a real world situation though, without keyboards to hid behind.

I'd be absolutely pissed off if Manning suddenly allowed to sign 5 players in January when most thought that Pearson needed at least two players in the summer which would have seen us compete more.

Those are the things the club stated so I will hold them to that.

Maybe time to take a few deep breaths mate and let it go? I was as upset as anyone at the manner of NP's dismissal, and of the lack of signings in the summer.

But to say you'll be pissed off with new signings in January, really?

Let's all move on, leave our agendas behind and get behind the new man, yes?

Appreciated mate. I've never made any secrets about my health issues. I posted on the "I'm not very well thread and nowhere else to go" thread in August, and openly said how I have tried to kill myself on numerous occasions. At the time, it was two, it's now three. I'm naturally always very lonely, unhappy and feel useless. Don't get me wrong, I have a nice house, lots of pets, a growing business, but I'm always depressed and constantly wish I was dead. It's not a nice way to feel, but when you feel useless, and worthless, it eats at you, and sometimes you read stuff, and it may be banter, it may be forum comments, but it's hard not to take things personally, when that's the way your head works. I try to do all I can for others and be kind, but it's landed me in an all manner of problems in life. Anyway, thank you for your concerns, I know you meant well and it's fine. One day, I'm 100% sure, I'll take my own life, but it won't be today and given I've failed three times, you could say I am to suicide what Lansdown is to picking mangers! Absolutely useless at it!
