This format works. Two go through from a group of four. Games kick off at same time, twists turns and what have you. Throw it all in the air to have 48 teams. Most likely best placed 3rds. Loses a lot of this drama.

Why o why stop playing at 2-0? They were the better side and whilst unlikely, one goal in the other game out them out. Funny though.

Went to just about all the home games that season. Only a couple of away games I can not in truth recall. Used to go with three mates, always the same routine, and would place bets on size of the away crowd that was easily countable in the open away end. 49 was always a safe bet. With Spain, Argentina, Brazil likely to be in the other half, other than the great steaming hurdle that is France, prefer our likely half. After ‘Iceland’ nothing is certain of course and there will be surprises in the next round, but would quite fancy us against Portugal or Germany, should it play out that way.

Point is well made, but never beaten a top top side in knock out in the WC. By that metric don’t think we have ever beaten a WC winner in KO away from Wembley, certainly since ‘66.

Think I am right that Gueye also misses it for two yellows as well. Feels ‘proper’ World Cup playing a side we would meet very rarely. Surely we start as favourites but thought the 0-2 v Netherlands was very flattering to the winners and Senegal have been one of the more interesting sides to watch. Got to be on it from the first minute.

Always felt QFs were par for us this time round. Thought France, Spain, Brazil, Argentina were best coming in and we would do well to beat any of them. Not entirely worked out that way. Got to get past Senegal first, but assuming that likely to be France. No disgrace to go out then if that is the outcome, but we are capable of good matches. Get there first and then who knows.
