I think the fact is that he gets us. He’s taken in the local area, got to know the club and its supporters and genuinely wanted to be here.

To me it really felt like we (the club) grew on him too.  I think he genuinely came to love it here and got more enthusiastic as time went on.  Shame we’ll never know what he could have achieved

Francois is completely in the doghouse for something that went on in Austria (as is OTC).

Pearson is certainly a “character” but not Nige’s cup of tea, that’s for sure.

Possibly a pathway back now for Pearson with his namesake gone?  He’s looked a proper player when I’ve seen him play

  3. I also know nothing about Williams but on the face of it would seem to be history repeating itself with Lee Johnson mark 2.  If he does get the job I’ll wish him well and give my support etc but it’s a massive massive risk isn’t it

  4. Totally legit thread.  It’s galling to see 4 of our former young stars that we developed playing in a premier league match for clubs that many of us remember being “smaller” than us not so long ago (whilst at the same time I’m pleased for / proud of them).

We made huge fees from all of them and the justification for losing them has always been that in theory we’d reinvest and continually improve.  Right now it feels quite far from that

One hundred and forty years is not a bad run.

Whoever could have predicted that a fall out between a Jordanian and a Kuwaiti would end it all ?

Interesting.  Is this speculation or have you heard something more?  The new guy is still clouded in mystery isn’t he?

I wonder if The Gap has met his soulmate yet, a potential Mrs Gap ?

Will we be hearing the pitter patter of Bady Gap footsteps in the next few(er) years ?

I remember when we thought it was petty amusing when the gap was able to buy cigarettes.  Was really funny when it could vote and buy alcohol.  It’s since been to and graduated from Uni.  Now it has a tedious junior management job in insurance to help cover its rent.  Over the next few years we can look forward to the gap settling down and getting married.  Time to shop for a hat as Cilla would say.  (Note all of this is only funny because the fewers genuinely think they are on a par with us in all respects).

He already has, but think he took advantage of it. Not the greatest of attitudes by all accounts. Won’t be here next year.

Interesting, that’s a shame.  Attitude as important as talent at this level.

  8. Pearson is an interesting one.  He was really eye catching, especially in the first half, cramped up a bit in the second.  He’s 21 so not sure if it’s harsh to have expected him to make the first team already (or maybe I’ve become conditioned to think that because of Scott?)

  9. Very unlucky to lose that.  We were the better team for much of the match, their keeper making several saves in the second half as we pushed to win it.  Frustrating to give away a last minute penalty but we more than matched them.  Really liked the look of Kadji, Pearson and Nelson.

Perhaps the 'old Kodjia' behind has spent his pension on his passion but isn't as nimble as you, and is fed up of looking at the back of your coat when the exciting bits happen?

Not as if there are many of them anyway.

I’d have more sympathy for this point if 1) I’d been persistently standing all match rather than about twice for a few seconds 2) he’d spoken to me about if first before dragging me onto my young son.

An old Kodjia behind me dragged me down by my jacket hood yesterday after I stood up for about 5 seconds during a moment of drama (Yeboah’s “foul” at the end).  This was without any attempt to ask me to sit down nicely (or otherwise) his first instinct being to lay a hand on me.  He knocked me off balance so that my elbow struck my son’s head.  The rule is against persistent standing, not any standing.  It’s a football match for God’s sake!

Loving the autocorrect of codg er! Haven’t thought about him in ages!

I sit in row 13 and have noticed they have not put no standing signs unless you are leaving nalong the wall in row 13. It only show a male figure , so all does that mean to say my lovely wife is excluded, are they telling us we can’t stand if we score, I know that’s not often, and how about all the other times, paying respect etc, luckily most of us have a sense of humour, don’t know how long they will stick to the wall

No way we will redevelop the Atyeo even a new stand would only increase the capacity by 1,000  no way without houses being bought we’d spend money to house an extra 1,000 people just wouldn’t make any financial sense.

Regards any 2nd tier highly unlikely would need to buy out 7-8 houses and get permission to build/no objection from residents.

No way and maybe rightly so Lansdown would fund any developments in short to medium term.

I heard a while back Dolman stand rebuild more likely than either end to look similar to Lansdown stand.

On Friday it was reported on Radio 5 Live that Luton Town were about to host their first Premier League game in their 138 year history. Wow that was really something...although under closer inspection not quite so astounding seeing that the Premier League didn't exist for the first 107 years of their history and that Luton played plenty of games in the top flight prior to that.

Yesterday, Evan Ferguson scored a hat-trick for Brighton, one of only four players to score hat-tricks in Premier League history while still a teenager. This is all very well and to be commended but it completely overlooks the feats of other players, some still alive, who scored hat-tricks while still a teenager in the top flight prior to the inception of the Premier League. Our own Kevin Mabbutt, for instance, v Manchester United in 1978. (This feat was again overlooked when Mo Salah scored a hat-trick at Old Trafford and was lauded as the only player to score three at The Theatre of Dreams against Man Utd in Prem history...although Dennis Bailey of QPR was mentioned as that occurred the season before the Premier League started.)

I know I am preaching, for the most part, to the converted, but I feel the media with their stance denigrates the achievements of all footballers and teams prior to the 1992-93 season. To my mind all that the formation of the Premier League did was enable the top flight clubs to be greedy. There was absolutely no difference in standards etc between the last Division One season and the first Premier League season that followed it.

In the days of the old First Division European Champions were still produced and England actually won the World Cup. Yet the feats of these players who played in the top flight then seem to have been airbrushed from history as it wasn't the Premier League.

Totally agree.  This winds me up no end.  It’s also stupid , why ignore 100+ years of history and make your sport look like some sort of recent American franchise.  I wonder if there is a fans campaign to get the bbc / sky etc to stop doing it

Good work from James on Twitter here, really shows Sykes’ impact:

Watching this back emphasised something that’s great about Sykes which is end product.  There’s tons of wingers / forwards around who have decent technique, speed etc but often they end up down blind alleys, over hitting crosses or blazing shots over. Sykes more often than not finds a team mate, gets a shot on target or draws a foul.  He’s a bit of a diamond isn’t he?

The other thing I noticed having missed some of the 2nd half (I was at work) was how did we not get a penalty for that blatant foul in the 2nd half??
