Its not the fact that the owners can't afford to develop the ground, but more the fact that our financial position as a team is hampered by FFP. Im sure if SL wanted to, he'd easily be able to spend tens of millions, but FFP prevents him from doing so.

Thought I'd just correct my above statement as people have been quoting me saying that FFP and infrastructure are not linked - which I do know. I just wasn't very clear with my above statement, which should read...

"Its not the fact that the owners can't afford to develop the ground, but more the fact that our financial position as a team is hampered by FFP. I'm sure if SL wanted to, he'd easily be able to spend tens of millions on players, but FFP prevents him from doing so.

    Doubt it.

With our average attendances this season I'd be very surprised if the club felt they could afford to expand the stadium any further, especially with our financial position. I can't see a couple of 2nd rate group games in the euros making much of a difference

We can laugh but a win at Northampton means the SAGS are major players for promotion this season. They're the in form team and if they don't make automatic they could well be a good bet to win the play offs.

Definitely! I could never imagine a scenario where they're in the auto's and not make the play offs with 10 games to go ?

  4. Not quite sure how the ref didn't give a foul on Dasilva when he got steamrollered by the West Brom player, especially after all the soft free kicks he gave prior to that.

Not quite sure how he awarded a goal kick when a defender blatantly headed the ball out for a corner.

With the penalty shouts from both ends, I don't think the ref was fair at all.

I was in the enclosure for the Fulham game - I tried spotting myself when they scanned over my area of terrace, but then I remembered I'd have been under 5'5" at 13, so probably hidden by other fans :) Bloke on the sponsored walk must be in his 80's be now - is he still around? What about the 4 and a half year old who sent his 60p pocket money in?

Found it difficult to keep it together when they closed with 'one for the bristol city'.

I was thinking along similar lines, I wonder what happened to 4.5 year old Leslie Trott of Whitchurch? I'd love to hear his story.

  6. Pretty sure I used to chat with Alan on CATS during the early 90's, and then many years later bumping into him in Latvia.

He was talking at the time of buying a property in Latvia as he liked it so much over there.

I'm assuming its the same Alan I'm thinking of.

    RIP Alan.

Was there as well, Bill, and 100% agree with your comment. Taylor could have gone for his lunge right on the touchline by me, then kicked the ball away, then got involved in a dugout scuffle.... he seemed hell bent on getting himself an early bath.

The co-owner Adam Murry was there yesterday; hugely ambitious to the point of being unrealistic IMO. Reckons he will get Bridgwater into League Two within seven years.

I took in that game too.

Oldland had the majority of the 1st half, but Longwell much better in the 2nd half and deservedly went 3-1 up. A mix up from a drop ball allowed Oldland to equalise, only for Longwell to win it in the last minute.

It's being reported as a record crowd, but I can only assume they calculated the attendance based on the entrance fee. I suspect it was slightly higher due to the kids who got in for free, so don't make up the entrance receipts.

How far do we feel we might ever go if we have a real climb up the table? champions league?

After 53 years of following city through thin and thin (punctuated by fleeting dances with sexy football eg 2016)

I really don't know what more we can expect.

Went as a neutral with some pals to see Leeds at Tottenham and was blown away by the ground and atmosphere. The game wasn't great but the stand behind one of the goals made Borussia Dortmund's stands look small; like a colosseum with steeply raked seating. It is light years beyond the new Ashton Gate, (but they are deeply in debt).

Now I am a big SL fan, given the integrity he has shown and the statesman like qualities you want in an owner. Goodness knows he has tried to support us more than any other fan, albeit some of his selections of head coach/manager have been weird.

This city could support 40k crowds if the football was half decent. Will we ever get to the promised land, will we all be on Zimmer frames when we do?

There's no way we can compete with the new White Hart Lanes of this World, but given a decent vision, we should be able to create our own massive single tiered stand behind the Atyeo if the club aimed high.

The last thing I personally want to see is a replica of the South Stand at the Atyeo end. That's too much uniform/mechano set style of architecture. We should aim BIG and make it an end to be feared.

Really appreciate the reminders on here as I don't normally walk past the areas where you sell the fanzine, so I need to make a slight detour when I buy it.

When you post these reminders on OTIB, would you be kind enough to pop the Issue number down on your post please? That'll make it easier to know if I've already bought it. Many thanks.

  10. For all the Premier League money that allows clubs to build their  infrastructure, there's also the Boltons of the World who literally had a fire sale and sold everything they had when they went on a downward slope.

The premier league is great for those teams in it, but once outside, it's extremely difficult for the others.

Imagine having to pay the maintenance and upkeep of Leicesters or Palaces new training ground when in league 1.

Newcastle is years behind due to lack of infrastructure investment, and yet they've been in the premier league for a few years.

I just we need to live to our own means.

Convenient that you ignore he also brought in Simpson who is stealing a wage right now and never looked like he could compete in a quality team. So that makes the (s)hit rate 20% who were worse than what we had.

I’m also over looking he presumably sanctioned releasing Pato who still has more quality than O’Dowda, Palmer and most importantly King?

Not conveniently, but a genuine case of me forgetting. Simpson is not good I agree, however out of those players who he's playing, they're a step up.

Without being partial to knowing the behind the scenes, I cannot comment on why Paterson didn't stay. Maybe NP told him a few home truths during last season? May NP doesn't rate Pato, O'Dowda or Palmer, and Pateson was the first to be shown the door in his clearing out?

Point is, Im putting faith in NP to clear out the likes of Simpson, Palmer, ODowda, and King next summer.

I think King and Simpson are on 1 year contracts, so they'll be gone if he can recruit others. I speculating that they're just here to run the dressing room and to be role models for the younger team members in the short term.

You're right, he does pick them, and the style of play. Doesn't mean they always do what they're supposed to, under pressure, though does it?

I'll meet you half way and agree the subs might have been better utilised last night but he wasn't exactly spoilt for choice. I don't suppose he expected Palmer and O'Dowda to basically disappear once he'd put them on.

I reckon he doesn't rate about 50% of our squad - they wouldn't be here if he had a blank piece of paper and could write down 18 names of his choosing for a matchday squad.

That's a situation he's inherited, albeit one he walked into with his eyes open.

So he's basically training and picking a lot of players that no matter how much instruction you give them, don't implement those instructions consistently.

Guess what, Johnson and Holden had the same problem too! So if 3 different managers have come to the same conclusion, I reckon the problem might be with the players, not the bloke training and picking them - although the bloke(s) who thought it was a good idea to buy them in the first place might well be culpable too.

If you gave Pearson that blank piece of paper, let's say it had 2 columns on it one headed Keep and the other Bin, how many of the current squad do you think would be in the Keep column?

I've no idea how old you are, so if you're a young un, I'm asking which players do you think Pearson would "swipe Right" for?

Pretty much agree with all of this.

So far, NP has brought in 4 players? Atkinson, James, King and Tanner, and aside from King, all of them have been an improvement on what we already had. If he can do that again, in the next transfer window (but most likely next summers transfer window rather than January), then that'll be another 4 of his own players, that'll be nearly a whole team of upgrades on what we currently have. If you consider that maybe one or two of what we have already can hold their own, then we might look a bit better next season

He's got no money to do this, so until we sell or offload to save wages, it's a slow burn process.

I said on another thread last night, I'd be tempted to sell Bentley (even though I'd like to keep him), to try and speed  things up, and to also up the quality of players we can afford.

As Rennie says, it's a regime taikored for the way Pearson likes his teams to play, other Managers will have different thoughts and requirements, and other performance specialists will have different ideas for producing the results.

The most important thing is getting the buy in from the players, especially if they are insisting on them taking personal responsibility.

Interesting that Rennie suggested that the pace required in the Premier League is higher than the Championship, and that's what they're prepping for.

I guess my comment isn't necessarily about how other managers set up, but how we compete with other teams at the top level.

Really refreshing to hear. We're not focussing on how we get out the division, but how we'd cope if we did go up. A really good long term viewpoint, so hats off to them for that.
