The only game in recent times I can remember with really bad fog was (I think) away at Torquay, we won 3-0 but had no idea what was going on down the far end of the pitch as you couldn't see anything.

    Didn't get abandoned though.

Best hattrick I've never seen by Lita ?

For balance, just went on their forum. They seem to think it’s linked to the construction of the new stand.

This special belter thinks that construction of a single tier temporary structure will cost £5m (because those projects don’t need planning, you spend that much when you’re leaving shortly and the stand will be constructed in two months, obvs), and despite it being a replacement for existing tents, will generate all totally “new” income.

    They’re special.

I know the Gash fans aren't prone to exaggeration, but where did he get an uptake of 3500 extra seats? According to the official statement, Wael suggested an extra 2500 seats (https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/bristol-rovers-new-south-stand-8398066)

The above estimates also rely on a sell out each home match to bring in the additional revenue.

Aside from that, it all makes sense ?

Seconded - also an honourable mention to @IAmNick for the almost instantaneous goal replays this season

    100% Amen to that.

What would be nice is if we could have a pinned thread or a separate thread for the goal replays as the matchday thread can be quite long sometimes and the video links can take some finding if you're behind on the trail.

Not criticising, but just an extra suggestion to make the excellent service even better ?

Not really sure while we're comparing apples with oranges here, is it that they both play CB, had occasionally shaky games, and are mixed race? Also important to note that, we signed Fontaine from Fulham at 20, and Vyner came through the academy.

Vyner stepped up, Liam wasn't able to. Fontaine left us 9 years ago, and there are so many variables. I'm not quite sure about the point of this thread, to be honest. Maybe I've missed something?

The point I'm really trying to ask is whether Zac Vyners upturn in performances is related to the coaching and support he's getting from the manager and coaches this season vs the support that Liam Fontaine got at the time?

It was well documented that Caulker was left to his own devices back in the day which didn't help him one iota, and I was contemplating whether Fontaine was just told to get out there, and get on with it without any additional assistance or coaching?

Think your trying to work out a question you can't possibly answer, both cases are completely independent of each other.

It could be a mixture of better coaching or Vyner himself or its just clicked. The only person who could answer this is Zak.

Going from his interview after getting his award recently, he said it was due to him 'growing up' and been able to express himself in a role that suits him. I think from this the consistency in being played at CB has worked wonders for his confidence and he and us are seeing the results. Credit to him and Nigel for having the confidence to play him.

My personal opinion is that he wasn't physical enough to play centre back before the last couple of seasons and thats why he's bounced around between midfield and RB because he had the ability but now has the physicality to play in his proper position.

Whatever it is he's done really well and hope it continues!

    Can't argue with that.

In the past he's been moved around from RB, to CDM, to CD of a back three and back four, playing as the left or right CD.

Consistency in his position I think has helped, and I wonder if the coaches at City have worked with him extra hard in one position so that he's now excelling?

Looking at him over the last few games, he's really looking a Rolls Royce style of player. He moves very elegantly, with pace and strength.

  6. Been toying with this thought recently, trying to figure out if Nigel Person and the coaching staff are responsible with the main reason for Zac Vyner's turnaround in performances, and whether it's down to really hard work by them on the training field to get Zac improved as a player? Earlier in the season, NP made a comment along the lines of "these are the players at our disposal and we need to work with them".

I counter argue this with the Liam Fontaine situation where he was massively going through a crisis of confidence and Derrick McInnes (I think) was constantly picking him to make mistake after mistake for successive games. Did the coaching staff at the time recognise that Liam needed additional specialist training, or did they just set up training the same way, day-in day-out in the hope that Liam would come through it?

Basically, is the difference due to the coaching that each player was getting, or something else fundamentally different?

I'd like to think that as a set of coaches, Bristol City at the moment have some very talented staff that know the limitations of the players and work hard to address those weaknesses.

I always thought Louis Carey did well at right back, especially with Murray on the right wing!

I thought the same with Cole Skuse. Remember the game where he marked Craig Bellamy out of the game versus Cardiff?

The Second of May you say?

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_2/1306803.stm

I well recall gasheads w*nking themselves into a coma every May 2nd post 1990, even naming their fanzine after it.

Then, on 2nd May 2001, Rovers (hitherto the most mediocre side in English football having never been in top or bottom divisions) were relegated to league two for the first time in their history. By Wycombe (yep, them again!)

The tugging stopped. The circle jerking stopped. The 2nd May was now associated with the saddest day in their history, when they fell to the lowest ebb they had ever been to. A cruel irony - fate would have that their special day was now their most tragic achievement.

Until 16 years and one day later, obviously.

    We should do advent calendars.

Surely they couldn't drop any lower than that, that must be their lowest ebb ever???! ?

The man is very intense and the style his sides play are super intense. This cannot be sustained for a long period, which is why he wont be at club's for a long time. However, his entertaining style of play is great to watch from a neutral POV and Leeds fans were very lucky to have him until the final season. They can't say they were not enjoying the ride under Bielsa.

One day I hope English football becomes more Latin in the way we approach football rather than playing for the percentages and set pieces.

That's my memory of him, and I thought the enforced Covid break the year they went up actually benefitted Leeds as it effectively gave them a mid-season break that allowed the Leeds players to recharge their batteries.

In the previous season, didn't they run out of steam towards the end of the season due to the intensity they played at?

Why the **** is it a weird L shape? If you’re in the corner, you won’t be able to see a thing?! And why are they different heights??

******* brilliant. Imagine the bar being so low you get excited by this.

Been thinking about this myself. If you're sat in the smaller side stand and you're looking across to a corner on the far side, you literally have 6 or 7 pillars blocking your view!

I'm sure when they release the video fly through we'll be able to check.

  11. I'd love to see something like this occur in the UK, or maybe something like a fiver entry etc...

But already mentioned, it also requires the stadium to have the spare capacity, which we dont.

However, it would probably require a rethink of things like FFP, because you'd be missing out on a mass of income to contribute to FFP (unless you can offset the loss of gate receipts with Sponsorship instead?)

I was there this day (below), last game of the season 1990, promoted to (the then) Division Two. Think it was against Walsall and we won 4-0. My lasting memory was the goal scored by David Rennie - a sublime 20 yard chip that looped over the keeper.

90th minute and the Eastend prepares to invade the pitch, sparking 'Scenes'!

    eastend1990_invasionC_IdSYYXUAA3lCU.jpg

Wasnt there a rumour that during that game, a shot from City was going wide of the post and someone right next to the post stuck their foot out and directed it into the net?

This will (should) then lead to more consistency if they enforce the laws, it will also embarrass players hounding the ref giving him abuse and will be called out. A yellow card for abusive language and it's on the mic too so the player cannot argue the decision, so yellow card the player (and multiple players at that if need be). This is where Nige has a huge point, it is the inconsistency and mic'd up refs will have to be more consistent, or we will at least hear an explanation.

To be honest, and I'm truly with you, I'd hope that it would stamp things out, however there will be situations that will be subjective like we get with Var. One persons interpretation of something being offensive isn't the same as the next person.

Also, how can you be sure who said what if a mic just picks up someone swearing? it could be any number of players rather than the one the ref is asking to speak to.

Some people also don't like having their integrity questioned - look at the Tony Adams\David Elleray example - the ref took a harsh dislike to being called a cheat. Calling someone a cheat isn't foul or abusive language, but the referee might really take it to heart and book or send off a player whilst the rest of us listening may think it's a very harsh call.

All in all, I'm sure it would be better to hear the refs, I just feel that extra baggage will come if that happened, and that extra baggage will be interpreted in different ways by different people watching on.

Get the refs mic'd up and we can at least hear why they have or haven't gave a decision. It wouldn't be so bad if they got a decision wrong if they said what their reasoning was, and it was just a mistake. But how it is at the moment everyone are just baffled by multiple decisions.

I've a feeling that Mic'ing the refs up will lead to other questions such as "why didn't the ref send that player off for swearing at him", whereas another referee may not let some fruity language go and send someone off.

Hopefully would be good to get our business done early , like when cots was in charge ,

we’re usually chasing around the transfer market on the last week

Agreed. I really like it when we have players on board early. They can then have a plan put in place for the summer, and come to training and be involved from day 1.

I don't particularly like it when we sell players at the last minute and rush to bring bodies in to make up the numbers. New signings along this approach, may be players we've had our eye on, but surely last minute signings restricts the pool of players you can select from.

    To add:

of the 24 relegated PL teams - 6 have bounced straight back up in first season back in Champ

of the 24 promoted Champ teams - 8 have come straight back down in first season in PL

    Further:

If Sheffield Utd go up plus Watford or Norwich, there will be just 4 clubs with PPs next season…the 3 coming down, plus whoever out of Norwich or Watford who don’t make it.  5 clubs if neither of them go up.

I'd be interested to see how many relegated sides bounced straight back up before Parachute Payments were introduced.

Normally when a team gets relegated from the Championship into League 1, or from League 1 to League 2, they're usually the favourites to come straight back up, which kind of indicates that relegated sides are fairly strong regardless of PP's.

(ps. I'm not in favour of PP's, I'm just intrigued by the above question)

I would like to add John Emmanuel, Gow's "understudy", and Mick Harford, and of course Norman Hunter.

There's a difference between "hard" and "strong" I think, perhaps it's the way it's used? Dele Adebola was one of the strongest men I ever saw for City, watching defenders bounce off him was great fun.

We would be down to 8 men every other week! :)

Tony Rougier away to Barnsley. Nobody could touch him when he shielded the ball by the corner flag. After ten minutes of him doing so, the referee ended up giving a freekick to the opposition in sympathy

  18. I see Andy King staying around.

    Those vulnerable to me are:

    - Joe Williams, not because of ability, but because of fitness reliability - we can't just keep changing the side week-in, week-out due to not knowing if he's fit

    - Kane Wilson, not sure he's hit the heights expected, but I do understand that was due to a nasty injury, but the way NP is talking, it sounds like he may be a fitness liability

    - Weimann will stay, especially as he re-signed on reduced contract a year or so ago.

    - A real wild-card shout would be Benarous, depending on how his rehab is going.

    - Kalas 50%-50%

Personally, I'd like to see the following players brought in: Keeper, CBx2, CMx2, LB, RB(if Wilson leaves)
