Right, so you aren't talking about controlling possession; just having a bit more of it. That makes more sense, though you'll be aware "passing it around the back four" carries a fair bit of risk too i.e. one misplaced pass and the opposition are in.

Strikes me that with no league win this year until today, Manning took the pragmatic approach and decided the result was more important than the performance. Also bear in mind he has literally had next to no sessions on the training pitch since the new year due to the number of games we've had. He clearly doesn't think the players are quite there yet to be fully confident with a possession based game, tho we are seeing some promising early signs imo.  Fair enough.

We'll have to disagree on the performance of the defence, which I thought was v good (tho note on another thread you name three of our defenders as your performers of the day??), and also that Boro didn't really cut us open too often imo, and that it was a deserved win - I think it was fully deserved.

It’s a easy game football, get the game won by half time and then why risk it,the result is all that matters,we carved them open numerous times first half and then to think we would try to play the same way 2nd half is madness

Obviously not every game pans out the same way.

If a team is 2-0 down they have nothing to loose.

If they have quality, they are bound to go for it & cause problems.

Sitting back to contain them (after a gruelling recent fixture list) is one option, we did it & we won.

If we'd have carried on attacking & been caught out then that would have been wrong.

Getting the result is what mattered & we showed how good we can be to get the game won in the first half.

That is common sense,to think Dave still wanted us to attack is either naive or plain stupid

Come on now. Without myself fully being on board with the original post, no one can honestly say ‘Manning has barely taken any stick‘ on this forum.

It’s nonsense and anyone with their senses can see it,even after today they can’t help themselves

I made one thread about the second half…hardly picking holes is it?  And balanced against all the other positive posts?

Did you or anyone start a thread about how good we were first half because I didn’t see it(it’s a city thing being negative because I do it as well tbf)

Just explaining how I feel about him.  I want him to do well, 1) he’s Bristol City manager and 2) I find him quite likeable.  That make sense?

Of course mate but to pick holes in a 2-0 away win seemed a bit off,we all think we can be managers but actually doing it and posting on a forum are not the same

I think people see WIN and think everything was fine.

At the start of the 2nd half, I saw little reason to change anything too drastic, but happy to play more cautiously, not over-commit players forward.  I didn’t see a need to encourage a team 2-0 down to go 235 against an increasingly pressured back 5 and play 45 mins in our half.

No, I do actually, he’s quite likeable.  But I sometimes see contradiction.  I’ve said before I think he’s genuine, and I like that.

I was desperate for him to get a win today, get the winless streak off his back and try to get something building.  If I didn’t like him, I’d want him to fail.

Are you serious there,if I didn’t like him I would want him to fail Jesus behave yourself mate,if you’re feelings towards a manager overcomes the success of our club then you’re head needs a wobble

I feel the fact we played 120 minutes midweek invited the pressure.

We didn't press anywhere near as well as the 2nd half went on, we looked knackered and off our feet. The changes pushed us deeper, but at that point we were trying to conserve the win, going for anything more would have been ridiculous, they'd have walked through us

That could have a saying but Dave will be able to tell us how much we ran midweek

Why not?  It’s common to start threads after a game, things get lost in the MDT. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have no issue with trying to protect a lead, but you can do that in different ways. But for a manager who talks so much about controlling possession it feels weird that wasn’t his solution to take the sting out of an opponent?  If we’d bored them to death second half, I’d be thinking very different tonight.  It was more the manner of what happened.

Dave mate you don’t like him much do you,do you think a manager can be judged in a year at our place let alone a few months

Okay. Personally not convinced that performance must equal result (in any direction).

That’s fine, end of the day we could of been home and hosed by half time,if going defensive second half to protect then I’m fine with that,be boring if we all agreed

If giving up territory and possession was the best way to defend a lead… no one is suggesting going gung ho, but think we could have protected the lead in a way that left us less exposed.

The best way is how we done it because it bloody worked

I agree with Dave. Great win, but we went to pieces in the second half and a team like Southampton could have killed us off.  Its a worthwhile discussion

That is down to players,if we continued to carry on having a go they could have picked us off, what do you want

We won and that's the whole idea of the game. Long may it continue regardless

You have to win in a certain way cmon you must no that, setting up to to protect a 2-0 nil lead is unthinkable to some

Not being childish one little bit.  And most certainly not posting anything for tit for tat.

    Today’s opinions from me are:

    Tanner was ace

    Wells and Knight pressed brilliantly.

    Team were ace 1st half

Set-up 2nd have was poor and contributed to an uncomfortable end to a game.

    Overall; great result.

That’s stating the obvious though, did it need a thread

  14. 24 minutes ago, Davefevs said:

They happened under him too.  Unfortunately some of those posters who had it in for Nige wouldn’t have created any positive posts re other aspects of the game like I did. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Bit childish that Dave if you are doing it for tit for tat,you are better than that

Thought he was excellent WITH the ball today.  Seemed to want to attack his man and with success too.  Has developed into a very tidy Championship performer.

On the money this time Dave, probably his best performance and he’s had a few, forget about he might not be able to cross a ball this lad can defend

I feel the same way. It aint Manning's fault he was given the job. If we won today and Pearson was in charge we'd all be happy (maybe except for Ian).

Can tell you right now if big Nige was in charge it would of been the perfect performance but for some reason this wasn’t and needed calling out

Interesting about the offside I've not seen anything to show it was a mistake by the linesman

Ultimately it didn't count so it's irrelevant

You could say we were a slip away from conceding but equally we were fine margins away from scoring more goals in the first half

There's still a strong feeling that some posters can't praise Manning.

Without repeating myself I was a big Pearson fan but some of the negativity should be aimed at the pillocks running the club,Manning is doing ok,if Pearson was still in charge would a thread like this even be started

Wouldn't agree we were chasing the ball, first half we were second half we dropped deeper, naturally giving boro more of the ball but they didn't hurt us with this possession and on many times over played things

Either Dave has been watching to much prem football or massively overrates our squad

It is much the same players.

Anyway I can't be bothered for a long back and forth on history of managers. I'm happy we won finally, credit to Manning for the team selection in particular, 2nd half we'll all have our own views on, pros and cons etc.

Of course, had cornick and bell not missed sitters that win could of been huge,if it is down to boro being dogcrap or our manager saying have a go only time will tell

No, imho it feels more ignorant for fans to give Carrick credit and not critique Manning in some measure???  No?

Always be critical in certain times and also praise, during the game people were going over the top at saves max made that were bread and butter let’s be honest so I do agree but we haven’t got the squad to play 95 minutes so we have to make sure the points are coming our way
