It’s highly relevant. We looked at how he played there and liked it.
Yes it’s a step up in quality in this division. The players at his disposal at Oxford (the midfield trio at least) are high end League 1 players, nay, even championship level players.
The key difference here is that the central midfield trio are not high end players in this division. Therefore we will struggle to impose OUR game onto them.
So Oxford is very relevant, because the manager has been recruited because of his style he played there. But I’m afraid he will have quickly learned today that JL and BT have not built a promotion challenging squad.

This is no dig at Manning. I actually liked his style of play and I want him to succeed here. But he’s gonna need a number of replacements to do so.

I respect your thoughts and am aware that you have worked in scouting etc. However Oxford's high end midfield players didn't stop us putting 9 past them in two games earlier this season/preseason.

My limited knowledge/observation is based on over 70 years following this club. During that time only three managers have really impressed. AD for obvious reasons, GJ who almost pulled it off, and Cotts who gave me the most enjoyable season ever.

I was starting to think that Pearson, given time and backing might have added to the very small list.

I have real doubts about the new guy. Mainly because of those in control and making the decisions. I wonder whether getting rid of Pearson was more important to them than appointing Manning.

I so want to be proven wrong.

  2. My thoughts are that it is irrelevant how Oxford play. They're in League One. Championship is a big step up(apart from Ipswich 🙄)

Also any new coach/manager would surely have encouraged the players to stick with Pearson's style of play for today's game and then use the international break to work on their own particular way that they want to affect change.

Maybe back in the day, as a child. But I guess it's pretty different for him now. With power comes responsibility as they say.

When SL was at Senior Reds in Feb it was quite clear that it was his empire (my word not his) and he was the decision maker. Obviously though advised by others, and no doubt JL has his ear on footballing matters.

I would describe Manning's first interviews as alright/fine/average.

Nothing to get either excited or concerned about yet.

What matters is how he talks to the players and if he can get them fit, focused and playing well.

    Let's see...

My thoughts as well. Nothing out of the ordinary really. But not as considered and thoughtful as Nige. Different style.

I am at loss though to see what a Head coach of a team we dicked 4-1 and 5-1 this year can achieve over the manager of the team inflicting said dickings! Time will tell, but I have a feeling we've been here before 🙄

As far as I'm concerned, that would be an argument in favour of appointing him, rather than a reason not to, though as I already said, I'm not actually advocating it.

I'm not sure any of us know what we are advocating any more and that includes the owner and his associates 😄

That actually is not entirely beyond the bounds of possibility, in my opinion (and no, I don't know anything, apart from the relevant history that we're all aware of). Nor am I advocating it, thought the one redeeming aspect would be that it might provide some continuity and help preserve at least a little of the culture instilled by Pearson, which would be a small consolation.

But would it not be Pearson by proxy? Not that that would necessarily be a bad arrangement, it's highly likely that Curtis is probably in regular contact with Nige.

Anyone volunteering to stand outside the ground from 10-30 to see if Frank turns up?  I would do but it's going to be raining 😞

I can't imagine that our owner will flying over from Guernsey this morning

Again - contradictions in the various lines being put out there.

Personally I think given the pretty good record DR had over previous seasons, that this "offence" of giving them a week off to rest, is hardly a sackable offence. Also In JE's case.

Especially when you scrutinise the details - who actually are we talking about getting injured since/during the international break?

Williams - impact injury in training.

    Naismith?

James - impact injury vs Ipswich

So the reality is the difference between the line ups pre (Leeds) and post (Coventry) last international break was 2 players, Nays and Williams? Doesn't align with the story that the week off has caused more trouble. On the contrary, maybe the rest helped the recovery of others?? Weimann, Conway etc.

    Hardly sackable...

I agree and I would imagine that they all have their own individual training plans personally tailored to their "numbers".

They're hardly likely to come back from a short term rest and immediately get into high intensity workloads. Light efforts gradually increasing I would have thought. Plus it's not the start of the season, so core fitness shouldn't be an issue.
