  1. Be a shame if Tongue is rested. He is very erratic & can be what you need to break down a settled partnership. Robinson just adds nothing for me, i expect the Aussies would be much happier facing his slow bowling than god knows what coming at them from Tongue.

Possibly. I think this approach is as new to the proponents as everybody else so it's still in it's infancy so I think some of those subtleties may develop in time.

Judging by Stokes performance at the end of the day something had changed slightly, even it was the old fashioned, hitter and anchorman approach.

Yeh i think you are right there, they will certainly be discussing how to make things better or when they need to change thier approach, i think some people think that Stokes and Baz are just saying “be aggressive, whack anything you can!” but of course they will be talking & looking at things to make it better.

Was surprised by Stokes, the one player that i didn’t expect to be the anchor! He did very well to keep things ticking over with Brook.

  3. All for Bazball, but sometimes you just dont need to force it. The pitch is/was there for runs all day long no matter how you bat. My issue with yesterday is that when Lyon was injured, all they had to do was calm things down for 7 or 8 overs and just let the bowlers tire themselves instead of looking for the shots - it turned out Australia set their traps perfectly to get the wickets, particularly Root’s.

Still think we will at least draw level, maybe even slightly ahead after our innings, but we missed out on a chance to put some real pressure on the Aussies. It’s still looking decent to me, but could of been a lot better had we played a little bit smarter at times.

I certainly don’t want them to change their approach, but yesterday does feel like a missed opportunity at the moment if they just played the conditions at times, fingers crossed it all goes well today.

I don't think people understand how modern football transfers work.

I think people think it goes like buying club scout player, buying club submit bid, selling club accept and then give permission for the buying club to speak to the player. Player then comes down and discusses terms, meets the manager and then makes a decision.

However the reality is far from that. For example, Mason Mount had agreed terms with Man Utd before Utd had even submitted a bid for him! That's how it works these days.

Yes tapping up is illegal but it goes on in every single transfer so its just seen as an acceptable part of the game now.

You don't ever hear of players rejecting clubs these days do you? That's because it all gets agreed well before the two clubs enter discussions.

The point I'm making is that for us to have submitted bids, we already know that he wants to join us.

Not quite as simple as you make it out to be.

Of course most players speak to other clubs before a bid is made, & you are right that not many will say "actually no i don't want to join you" - all modern day footballers, particularly in the lower leagues, will always keep their options open & not burn bridges. He is likely to have already met with Ipswich as well & told them he "wants to join".

This one is anything but a certain signing in my books.

I agree with you. You have to give Khawaja and Cummins credit but throughout the test we showed better captaincy and better cricket. Just as in football though individual errors, both in decision making and execution, cost us.

I can't see how Mo is going to be fit so we need another spinner. Do we go leg spin with Parkinson or do we want another off spinner due to the number of Aussie left handers. Dom Bess, who looked like he was going to be next cab off the rank at one time, is an all rounder choice or how about giving Jack Carson a go.

Does Ben Foakes come in behind the stumps and if so is he a one for one replacement for Bairstow or does Bairstow stay as a batsman and we make changes elsewhere.

I can see Mark Wood coming in at Lords but at the expense of whom, Jimmy?

I'm sure we'll play the same way but will Labuschagne and Smith fail again. Lords is often England's graveyard.

Absolutely, didn't think Khawaja had it in him to play like that in England & Cummins did excellently well both with bat & ball, although i do think he is underrated as a batter (definitely not an all-rounder but can do a job when needed!).

Dom Bess seems to have disappeared, but would be surprised if Mo can make it so be interesting to see what they do there. I think Foakes is a better keep than Bairstow, but don't see who he would come in for. Brooks hasn't done anything wrong to be dropped & Pope is VC so no chance of him making way & i don't think you can drop Bairstow for what he can bring to the bat when he's on form.

My main concern is what you have mentioned at the end - we got Warner, Smith & Labushagne out cheaply in both innings, but still couldn't do enough to get the win.......what happens when they hit form?

  6. Really good test that, think it was our own mistakes that cost us (Bairstow missed stumpings, charging down Lyon when he was bowling when we didn't need to do it quite so much, no balls) & not so much Australia being better than us. Does make the next test an almost must win so will that add to the pressure, but a very entertaining start. Can't see any changes, apart from Mo if his finger hasn't healed, which if it does will likely just rip straight back open as it's only a week away. Jimmy potentially rested, but that only happens if he doesn't feel he can go again so soon. I would expect the same line-up, or as close to it as they can possibly get.

He can't exactly come out and say, "I'm off and I'm going to Bristol City" in the press before a bid has even been accepted can he?

It's my first summer back on OTIB for a long old time. Is this the general theme? Leaping to conclusions?

    Blooming hell.

Don't think what i stated had anything to do with jumping to conclusions! More of a potential outcome theory based on a "what if" scenario. I have no idea what will happen with this, but can certainly see us walking away if Derby try to play the waiting game.

    Fixed that for you

FFP will catch them out, especially if they are outbidding in the millions. We have cut our cloth accordingly for this season. I don't know much about Ipswich's squad but having had a quick gander, i don't see anything worthy of note that they can sell if they need to balance out the books.

For me Scotland have always our noisy neighbours and although they’re pretty crap I secretly have something of of soft spot for them - much the same way that I have soft spot for Lincoln City.

    Don’t you mean Bristol Rovers?

Wolves can't afford as it stands, FFP a problem there.

Brighton, £30m on Joao Pedro and pushing for Colwill for £40m now.

Says they're keen on Alcaraz, Southampton. 20 years old, midfield- £25m asking price. Will Scott outcompete him?

Not sure how it works, but with Wolves letting go of Jimenez & Moutinho, along with the likely departure of Neves, would that put them in a stronger position money wise, or will that not factor in to FFP until the following summer?

    And there we have it:

OTIB at its finest. I didnt mention once about the position we're in but merely that I wasn't feeling the same excitement as others regarding the new signings.

But hey-ho Len, don't let a good misquote get in the way of a populist post.

I'm sort of with you in a way on this......the 2 signings we have made so far has made me feel that it is a very decent "start" to the window. I wasn't overly annoyed about the Bryan deal falling through (even though he would have been a good signing) & i feel the same with the Roberts deal as i don't see either of them as being better than Pring.

If we sign a couple of quality midfielders & another centre back then i will be impressed, but if we go in to the start of the season with what we have signed already (which i highly doubt we will) then i will be underwhelmed.

Interesting at the bottom of that article says City have approached a striker but I can’t find the player in question.

    edit Championship star not striker

I saw that as well, but got a feeling it may be click-bait & the “championship star” was the signing we made last week - Rob Dickie.

I would not sign him a new contract. He has injury problems and likely will do the same. He is not at the same level as before and we have enough defenders if Vyner stays here. I really liked Kalas but last 2 seasons was mostly injured...

Last season he was indeed injured, but the season before he played 35 league games, which is not an injury hit year at all..........if he is willing to accept much reduced terms then i am all for it, if not then he will move on.
