Just read Football Hackers by Christoph Biermann about the revolution in football statistics and analysis. It really seems to have become an industry and pretty well everything seems to be analysed these days including the personalities of players and the right mix of characteristics in a team to achieve the optimum result.

I found the chapter on 'packing' particularly interesting, not only did it include the contributions of our ex player Jens Hegeler in this field it also explained why 'packing’ statistics (completed passes that cut out players) is far more reliable as a statistic as teams with the highest packing stat in a match win far, far more often than those with the best passing or possession stats. (Obviously the best stat to determine which side is most likely to win is goals scored!)

It was an eye opener as to how many statistics are used and the variety of different facets this analysis covers with some clubs funding stat companies.

I suppose this one is more for our own Davefevs, but does anyone know where City stand as a club in the scheme of things? Are we stat and analytics sceptics or do we fully endorse this new approach to gaining an advantage. Plus where do we stand in relation to other Championship clubs in the use of this. I would imagine under LJ we were embracing this with open arms.

Probably, but we didn't manage the "packing" bit.

Stupid idea. They'll ne making the goals bigger next ffs. Just leave it.

Was working in Edinburgh and on Jock TV saw a programme where they worked out the size comparison between goals and the average height of males(goalkeepers) when the rules are first introduced. With the current height of keepers the goals they experimented with were huge.

They then played a game and the attacking teams still played as normal until they realised there was a lot more space around the keeper that they could score in. Blimey did the shots start raining in then from all angles and distances.

Would certainly make for some high scoring games.

  3. I went to Connaught Rd school and when we played Novers Lane at football "Mr Nicholls" their football teacher used to either referee or run the line. He would really tear into the team shouting and bawling and generally berating them. Even as a 10 year olds we felt this was over the top and not very dignified for a teacher. "Big" Mr Davis our sports teacher, as opposed to another teacher "Little" Mr Davis, was the complete opposite always encouraging and giving advise.

I then went to Hengrove School and in my class was Mr Nicholls daughter who I believe had gone to Knowle Park Junior School. She wouldn't believe the stories I told her about how her dad behaved at school football matches telling us he was such a quiet man. Strange what football can do at all levels.

Memory  must be playing up again. Blimey, I ve been watching about 67 years. Surely I'm entitled to a free S/T soon.

Must admit that from age fourteen to early fifties I played regularly and only got to games when they didn't coincide with our matches. So I haven't suffered the same agony as other long time serving fans.

Unfortunately, all my family were Rovers supporters (I don’t hold it against them) so I couldn’t watch a City match until I was able to make my own way to the ground. This was about 1960, though I can’t remember the date or the match. Although I lived in Kingswood it wasn’t a problem getting to there as, in those days, there were bus “specials” that ran from all over the City directly to Ashton Gate.

After two guesses, I had four yellows, and couldn't think of a single word with all four of those letters. And as I use hard mode, that meant I couldn't make a guess!! Finally got it, by randomly trying letter combinations! Not a word I've ever come across...

Not a Roy Orbison fan then ?

Salary - "Competitive depending on experience".

I.e we hope to get someone as cheaply as possible who doesn't understand the market rate pay wise.

Standby for someone who's just finished their degree or masters; and in need of any job to pay off those loans.?

With the salary being banded about I don't think you would earn enough to need to start repaying fees.

Went to Vietnam a few years ago with someone who had been to Delhi and they said Hanoi was like Delhi with worse roads, less cars, more motorbikes and less breaks - not that you get much more than 10mph anywhere because of the sheer amount of people.

I didn't even try and drive, walking anywhere was enough of an culture shock to me - the idea that you have to just walk out in the middle of rush hour traffic and trust everyone will go around you is mental!

Far worse when the better half is holding your hand and hasn't got your confidence. You walk, she stops  and pulls you back and it's bloody carnage!

Why should the club be punished for the moronic behaviour of one of its fans.

It is very difficult for stewards to stop a few thousand people running onto the pitch.

Could always go back to fences around the pitch!

This is the sort of behaviour they were introduced for.

Could even give the referee a watch so he can check his timings...

I've ways thought the crowd could start the six second chant, in unison,  to remind the ref and maybe gee the keeper up a bit. Would also be more productive than throwing shoes around.

    Exactly.

The rivalry between Brighton and Crystal Palace stems from a period of ground sharing; for whatever reasons it builds resentment and jealousy rather than ever being regarded as a favour.

Unlike a lot on here I neither hate nor dislike the Rovers but think it would be a bad move to let them play at AG even the once.

Think they shared with Gillingham for a couple of seasons then spent several years at the Withdean before going to the new ground.

Reminds me of Kilkenny, for every good ball they play, there's 5 bad ones and spends more time telling others to do stuff, than doing it himself. If only he knew how to point, he could be NK in disguise.

    Williams does this for him.

Didn't we have t shirts printed

" We hate the gas We're all electric"

Have just remembered the correct t shirt printing which was prompted by a TV advert for electricity at the time the Eastville feckers tried to grab our ground when we went into administration.   It read

"We don't want the gas we're all electric"

I can't believe you missed out Pat Hoban & Jimmy Keohane!  Such was their immense contribution while here.  There's another forward and midfielder for you! ?

Actually there have been a fair few..

Brunt, Heffernan, Henderson, Rodnee Macaree(!), Brendon Maloney apparently played nearly 50 games for us in 13/14 and I have no recollection of him at all!!!!

They weren't very good when playing at Clevedon on loan
