Even in the 70s Alan Dicks had Tony Collins as what these days we would call head of recruitment. His scouting network led to us finding the likes of Gow and Ritchie as youngsters as well as more experienced stalwarts of the promotion side.

Here we are 50 years later with nothing comparable. Passive or what?

Its probably passive, but we can have the best scouts in the world, and we would struggle to afford, or justify a 50 grand transfer fee at the moment. All those million pound or so punts over the last 5 years, how could it have been allowed? Someone signed off on all this and now the club is buggered

I guess the question you have to ask is are you evaluating them based on their “a-game” or the middling levels we’ve seen them perform at.  Very few, if any (?) have performed at top 6 level consistently, odd flashes, yes.

What do you reckon dave,,, could we/ should we go in for 2/3 top championship free transfers in this next window, and bite the bullet on their wages? Im thinking wallace of millwall and lawrence of derby, plus one of the right backs available… to be financed by releasing whoever we can plus moving out ideally wells or palmer or both? Or do we just not have the budget available to do it?

Think it’s been better this season than it was last two summers. Atkinson looks a good player and done well for a first season in the league, James for free is a good signing although been under par recently (thought he wasn’t too bad yesterday though), King contributed more than I thought and Tanner will be a great player for the future.

Giving Simpson a new deal was a horrific decision in hindsight though

Sad to say cause no one could have forseen the exact circumstances, but baker’s availability record has been patchy historically, and he hasnt set the world alight when he has played before,,, the initial decision to not extend him was the correct one

He’s done exactly the opposite proving he is the man for today . He is clearing up a monumental mess and making some sense of where and how we can be a better club .  The truth seems to cause a few some issues , we have been a weak poorly run club for far too long . At last we have someone raising the standards and showing where we need to improve .

I quite appreciate these comments from nige, though im not particularly convinced hes the one who is raising standards or showing where we need to improve, or at least able to do anything about it

Yes, but the season we got him, he was deadly for QPR and was player of the month, month after month. They wanted to keep him on loan, but Burnley recalled him to sell him to us. We proceeded to play him out of position, but still ended the season with 17 goals (10 of which for QPR).  He has not played in the same role as he had for QPR or Huddersfield for us, where he has looked a class above Championship.

He didn't get a look it at Burnley, it was strange they signed him and never played him. I think they signed him thinking if they went down they had a player who would stay and help them go straight back up.

I appreciate you are a fan of his,, but the missed attempt at a through ball to pato a season or 2 ago was the final straw for me… and not someone who is too good for the championship. He likes to think of himself as the ace goalscorer,, but he cant get into our team and we are pants. Shocking waste of a transfer fee and big wage for us.

Absolutely, he’s started just 10 games out of a possible 86 since joining us & even under Dave Rennie, where his availability has massively improved, he hasn’t made it on to the pitch (as starter or sub) in even 50% of this season’s games.

Planning on having him as an integral part of next season’s team is either super optimistic or ridiculous, depending on your point of view.

Have to agree, what a shame, but its one of so many that have been brought in for big fees and salarys and just havent been worth it.

Again, not a Forest expert but they won 14 games in almost a year under Hughton. Doesn’t smack of having loads of clear direction.

And what a job steve cooper has done,,, wilder too,,, how come our rivals can make these appointments?!

This thread re started. What it is people don’t understand about a 3 year deal, with the remit of bringing through players for the future, from our academy and selling to buy, as we can not do much else due to FFP….I simply don’t understand!

We will be stronger next season with players with experience!

Its the players witth experience, weimann aside who arent really doing it for us, including the leicester has beens who were brought in to keep us steady.

the answer is obviously that we will Sell anyone who we get a decent offer for, but we are screwed.

  9. As a young teenage lad i had the pleasure of attending a sports physio course at ashton gate with buster… one day ive gone in and john bailey is sat there with one foot in a bucket of water with wires going in to it…. Small electric pulses to help with an injury according to buster…. Someone suggested that i put my hand in the bucket with johns foot to see if i could feel the pulses seeing as i was closest to him…. As a 13 year old city fan i certainly knew who he was, but wasnt sure why john was looking at me like a lion watching an antelope….

so i put my hand in gingerly…. At which point john shouts “BANG” next to my ear….. i obviously jump a mile and soil my underwear while he and everyone else around cracked up laughing…. Fun times!

No second coming, he has always been this good,

    Just misused in the past.

Hes done superbly this year, but if hes always been a 20 a season player for a variety of clubs and managers in the championship he wouldnt have ended up playing for us.

Hold my hands up. In previous seasons/ pre-injury I questioned his ability. Never his desire. There were times where I argued, “well what if I run around for 90 minutes and look like a grafter, will I get a game?”

However, this is why I’m not in football and probably never should be. He has had an absolute stormer of a season thoroughly deserves an international start let alone a call up, and I for one stand corrected. I also feel the coaching staff and Nige should get some praise as well, for getting the best out of him where others did not. Well done Andi.

Agreed, im not convinced hes the second coming of messi, but as a hard runner and when hes got a chance at a first time instinctive finish, he has been fantastic

I'd be amazed if we get a fee for either Wells or Palmer.

Say, Birmingham offer us £500k for Wells.  They aren't going to match his £27k a week wages. If they offer him £15k per week for 2 years, we will still have to cover £12k per week for a year  equivalent £600k.

Most likely we have some kind of arrangement whereby we forego a fee, Wells foregoes some wages and Birmingham pay more in wages for the first year.

Yes definitely, it will be pretty galling to SL if/ when that happens,, knowing how much money was spent on those 2 in particular, plus their wages, just to give them away to get them off the books.

Wells maybe possible to move on if to USA as suggested, as a forward there are usually suitors and he has not done himself any harm with his professionalism , his residual value is now in the sensible zone, and he will probably be wanting to play rather play than look for the final dollar (assuming his wages stateside would still be decent). If he can play and score a few more in the last 7 games, well you can maybe see a way out for club and player. Just reading his comments, I cannot see he wants another year at his age sat on the bench.

Palmer , well that is a whole different kettle of fish ! Depends if he just wants the money, or wants to try and kickstart a forever faltering career. Looks more like he will go the JET road to me, and have a downward cycle to his career plus it will cost us to move on. as we are unlikely to get a fee/his wages off without a nosebleed.

Vyner/Moore agree, both will want a move and will do all that is needed to get playing at the right level and regular game time. Bakinson should be sorted too, it seems he is playing each week. These three will not change much with FFP but it is still 3 wages. out. Every little helps.

Cannot see COD staying, Simpson gone, KIng to retire (maybe coach/senior within under23-s?) , Baker maybe to retire on health grounds.

Could be 9 plus out (the plus being the sale of one of  HNM/AS/ASc, possibly Kalas/JD unless deals renewed) compared to starting squad this season.

Agree with all that, there are a lot of good championship players out of contract this summer, if we could bring in 2/3 of the better ones that would actually make a better starting side, we might see some progress?!

Don't mind this as long as it's more a squad player playing the odd game.

That was my initial view, but why waste the salary when it could be used for someone who comes in as a first team striker

Yeah, I'm watching the same game.

    Cant blindly support utter shite

I ve said elsewhere re finance and that doesn't excuse shite on the pitch, worst half I've seen this season.

Only a few teams in the championship have any money. Coventry didnt play in their own stadium last season, luton have nothing, so many clubs are performing at a decent level, and we are served up the same rubbish constantly!
