    Runners!

This time last year I was in the midst of Brighton Marathon training for April 2020 and Feb was a struggle due to the shit weather. Coupled with some of my work travelling meaning doing long runs around hotel stays (almost a year to the day since the worst evening - running in the snow near Huddersfield away, feels a lifetime ago but SUCH A RUBBISH GAME OF FOOTBALL). It wasn't that fun but it seemed easier to wrap up and get out with the knowledge that by April I'd be enjoying sunnier evenings to head out. Now it's a long wait until everything 'big' in autumn, if they happen, and the idea of training through summer heat is not really appealing. Makes long runs a lot harder with all the hydration and fuel required to keep going, I find I need so much less to keep myself going during winter. Feb 2020 ended up with 185 miles of running - on 85 miles Feb 2021 so far but it's just all lacklustre stuff and running without any tempo considerations. The cold last week and this crap wind just hasn't helped me at all ... went for a 20 mile Severn Bridge loop the other day just to extend mileage but overall it's kinda without much purpose. Meh.

I’d considered it earlier in ... some lockdown, **** knows which. How cheap and easy is it to turn your standard road bike into something that can be used internally for Zwift etc?

Decathlon do cheap decent gear - long been rumoured to have agreed to open a store whenever Imperial Park extension gets finished but no sign of anything solid on that happening since 2018/19. so until then it’s online https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/running-hat/

It has been utterly horrific the past two days. Went out today without gloves and after 25 minutes had to give up as my hands hurt too much! I braved shorts but kept long sleeves on so wasn’t the lunatic @Tom Fspotted
  5. Just came to share this. Well outlined as you say. Burnley have been the example of well managed financial stability for a decade. Now it’s gone. Anyone who wants Lansdown out for a “lack of ambition” should be very aware of how most takeovers occur these days. What would our Plan B for ownership be? For most owners there is no pot of money to back a club. It is serviced by the club and future incomes are sold off accordingly (witness all the financial problems in our league) when you start to hit problems.

Gone very quiet. I know it’s cold but surely everyone hasn’t retired?
  7. Not seen many footballers be vocally antivax. It would pose a dilemma if your employer (football club) required you needed to have one for ongoing FA requirements or similar.

Brighton Marathon is my next scheduled proper event. I was training for it 2020 but obviously postponed. With most other big spring races postponed to Autumn, I can only imagine this following suit and being bumped. So now I’m considering the Green Man Ultra. Trekking around Bristol from Ashton Park school over 45 miles. In mud. In March. In more mud and waterlogged paths. Anyone got any experience of it at all?
  9. https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/bristols-new-train-station-delayed-4405716 I have no idea how it costs £3.5m and YEARS of discussion when they could just borrow the platform ramp design platform from the harbourside railway and start tomorrow.
  10. They’ll be asking for early bird ST renewals before fans get back in...
  11. Fans back at Ashton Gate... https://www.bristolbearsrugby.com/news/bears-confirmed-as-pilot-host-for-tigers-clash/
  12. If we progress tomorrow night & all is well with this procedure, presumably we would have two home games next week where we could offer up home tickets... Makes it a bit easier to engage the fan base if 2,000 can attend games.

Proper cold this morning when I went out at 6am. Very tempted to bust out the long sleeves but luckily the sun came along shortly and seemed to keep me okay.

Same with me. Broken. Aches everywhere! Got given a free massage gun thing a while back and that is good but it is much easier for me to give money to someone to hurt me instead of trying to do it myself!

I mean I like the idea of going out for a nice leisurely cycle around the countryside and stopping at numerous cafes / food spots etc to just keep eating your way through a trip... but it's such a faff. And you look more of a tit than a runner.

Cycling hurts my bum but running makes my knees ache. Dilemma innit.
  17. It's obviously a lot easier to build a truly competitive rugby team at the highest level. Naturally by having use of Ashton Gate - and a close newly built training ground - you end up with pretty much world class facilities no-one else will offer. A quick google suggests the likes of Leicester & Saracens use existing rugby club grounds for their training bases. Bristol have been clear that the recent signings have been sold on the whole package on offer. Whilst some rugby teams may end up offering more salary, some might prefer the idea of living in the South West with the best facilities on offer - therefore we capture players easier. Get those aspects right and all of a sudden, you need to go for the best coaching option to elevate the team to reap the rewards. Unfortunately with City, we're not a big draw in the scope of the league so end up relying upon developing players rather than enticing with the other elements.

After having everything cancelled this year to date I decided that doing the Run to the Stones Virtual Ultra next week (Mon-Sun) would be a challenge. Free to enter but you can pay for a medal / shirt if you want. Otherwise it’s a half / marathon or 100km week long challenge. It will need me to - probably unwisely - push my weekly mileage back up to the marathon training levels from current 40ish miles a week so hopefully won’t break!

Totally. Bastards. Why can't they stay home so I can have my fun! #standardfacebookmoanerapproach The first time was so quiet and easy I thought "this'll do me" and hence created a Strava 5k segment (https://www.strava.com/segments/23392194) that I can just repeat on. Managed a couple up until early May and then every time I head down - rammed! Went this morning as it was drizzle and colder so most people stayed away. Same with marina laps these days...

Ha. Well yes. Not with all the part-time walkers of recent weeks mind! Otherwise... long time slacker (i.e. uni rugby + then 5asides since every so often) and only really running for the past 5 years or so. But without any goals. Ticked off a couple of halfs last year after parkrun etc since 2017ish being more 'formal'. I'd aborted my Brighton Marathon training (first marathon) when that got postponed and fancied my chances of using the new found fitness from running to get some fast 5k times logged. Doing 3 & 7/8sish of lake grounds loops for a 5k is easy and relatively traffic free early doors into lock down + half a mile from my front door so it's my 5k base now.

Ooh. Just found this topic and the associated Strava group. New area of internet to discuss running - and not on a Facebook group with some weirder people at times...
  22. Brighton cope as the station surroundings were redesigned for Falmer. Manchester is expanding the trams with a new line which is next to Old Trafford and that has a queuing system etc. You just need to design it right and people can utilise it...
  23. Especially now it’s only one train an hour. It means it would close for trains twice every 60 minutes, albeit within a smaller window so not 30 mins apart.
  24. 3pm Saturday is an issue? How is it an issue for those wanting to watch the womens game but not those who want to watch the mens?
  25. North Somerset elections are coming up and hence the politicians find some good press releases to “approve” money that will never be spent?
