Here is the article from The Athletic:

If there is one club that is forever called "Sleeping Giants" it is Bristol City. Peter Goldthorne of The Athletic examines the legitimacy of this claim:

I have reached the conclusion that it is grossly unfair to label Bristol City as "Sleeping Giants" for even those of gargantuan stature that are asleep do at times awake and then rightly adopt the mantle of giants. In Bristol City's case they remain constantly asleep. Medical opinion is unanimous in cases of giants being asleep for 41 years plus that they are not actually sleeping at all but are either deceased or in a comatose state from which they are unlikely to arise. Thus I feel Bristol City should be called "Comatose Giants" as if prodded, unlike those that are dead, they do exhibit signs of life (unless it's approaching the 90th minute or beyond in a game).

The Athletic believes that although comatose so not strictly dead that owner Steve Lansdown should try and return the club back to the shop in Bolton from whence he bought it and try to convince the shop owner that it is indeed a dead club and not one that is just resting or pining for the (Fred) Fords. We believe that it should then be put back on the shelf with a price tag of £150,000,000 the high asking price due to the fact that the club comes replete with a modern 27,000 seater stadium that hosts the Bristol Bears rugby club as well as having lighting  that considerably pisses off Tilly Vacher in Clifton.

Glad I did not subscribe, what a crock of sh1t

    Sell Webster, sign Kalas ✅

Sell Kelly, sign Dasilva ✅ (and Rowe)

Sell Pack, sign Nagy ✅ (and Massengo)

Release Fielding, sign Bentley ✅ (and Gilmartin) ?

So, I got the logic of the main replacements, but we then also added Palmer, Szmodics (Paterson loaned out), Williams, Pereira, Afobe, Rodrigo.

We loaned out players at the expense of this additional incomings.

January we sold Brownhill, replaced with Wells, Benkovic and Henriksen.

    We over-recruited.

I see you have Pack as 734K, but reported at time as £4m?

  3. As things have turned out Ashtons shopping trips to Knightsbridge have not worked out well

Kallas, generally a good solid defender, but surprising how many times he gets out jumped and does not appear to be a good communicator / organiser, for 8m and high wages, would be happy to get back what we can and reduce wage bill

Palmer - No manager seems to want to play him, can be great when he is up for it, although i think his home and heart are still in Swansea, need to get what we can for and move on, looks like we have better options in Scott and other youngsters

DaSilva - originally looked a great buy, but since injuries has never recovered his pace which use to make up a bit for his lack of height (which I think is a real problem for a defender), but now way behind Pring at LB - so need to get rid

  4. Would like to see up go 1 up front and try to get a bit of control of the ball in midfield, think Weimann with his constant movement could be a nightmare for defenders, can be swapped out 2nd half with Wells, but also midfield pushing on to help him. If Williams & Semenyo not fit HNM into midfield & either Weimann back on the right or Benarous

                    Bentley

    Tanner   Kalas   Atkinson  Pring

                   Bakinson

    Semenyo James   Williams   HNM

                    Weimann

    or

                   Bentley

      Tanner   Kalas   Atkinson  Pring

    Semenyo James   Williams    O'Dowda

                         HNM

                      Weimann

    or

                      Bentley

    Tanner   Kalas   Atkinson Baker  Pring

        HNM James   Williams    O'Dowda

                      Weimann

  5. Accept what all say would not what Tinman put in a difficult position, so maybe just comes in to assist CF. It seems most think CF will need to short term help, of course we do not know if and how much input NP is having, but until we are in a position where long term decisions can be made, it seems silly not to utilise Tinman's experience when we are currently struggling so much. I sure this could work in a way so as to not affect his position and status within the club, assuming of course Tinman wants to.

Unfortunately City have form when it comes to failing to plan ahead, or indeed - to use your earlier suggestion - coming upon with plans that look as though they've been calculated on the back of fag packet. Dean Holden being a case in point. It's what got the club into this mess.

Don't disagree it can look that way, although I have always been of the opinion their was a lot more to that, will also add that the current CEO we are talking about was not here at that time.

My view is - he could have answered the questions better.  It left listeners really wondering what was going on due to authoritative answers from the club side but vague answers about Nige.  I’m not doubting his skills as a CEO, just thought he was a bit poor with a few answers.  I won’t judge his CEO credentials on some of the football questions he was asked….think he was trying to answer as best he could, and were really questions for a football person.

Don't disagree that some of the answers could be better, although I think so much is up in the air at the moment and anything you say is taken down and held against you at a later stage. My point was in response to a post criticising that we had no planning, which I find laughable.

Not sure RG was prepared or the right person to ask some of the football questions, think it was a hastily arranged exercise to try and put some of the rumours that NP has left to bed and reach out to supporters with a bit of information, in a time when its difficult to actually say that much

If he has then SAY he has. As I say, we don't need to be privy to everything, but we - the paying punters - have been with the club far longer than he has. Our families have often been for many decades upon decades. It's OUR club, not Lansdown's or the club executives. They are its temporary custodians.  We ask them to just give us a clue that you have some ideas on what to do, rather than just hope NP gets well very soon and is back to 100% health.

I'd say that you are the naïve one in thinking that this club - the club that took weeks to decide to appoint Dean Holden - has done any planning at all before this point. I'll remind you, this situation has been going on for months. The decline in the team's effectiveness has been going on for months as well.

If they have plans, Gould should have said they have, because this thread and many others are testimony to the fact that all his interviews have done are sow confusion about the future, create doubt, anger fans and look like things are simply drifting out of control at Ashton Gate.

Its OUR club (nice bit of sabre rattling) so we should be kept informed of ever decision and thought process going- you have got to naive in the extreme that any club, business or anything else does its planning in open forum or says any more than it needs to. Lucky you have nothing to do with running the club

Perhaps if GT had asked "are you making plans if NP is unable to return", he would have said yes of course we have to consider ever eventuality and you would of been happy, although sure would have found something else to be negative about

Instead you try to make out that RG is some sort of village idiot that has not thought I might need to consider what will happy if NP does not recover. There was me mistaken in that he was an experienced CEO, so I had to check and just to confirm teh sort of person SL has now employed:-

SMC, Strategic and Military Leadership 1989–1990 at Sandhurt, JDSC, Military and Strategic Leadership 1996 Cranfireld, AMP, Business/Commerce, General 2006 Harvard, served as a tank commander as well as being a very successful CEO at Somerset & Surrey cricket

Does this sound like someone who had not thought about what if? ohh best wait and panic at the last minute

I expect them to spell out that they HAVE a plan.

Not sort of vaguely say "Nigel is still here. We don't know when he'll be back."

Just to remind you, this hasn't suddenly happened. Pearson did not suddenly fall ill before the Coventry match. Reports say he hasn't been well for months and has already had to take time off this season.

They have had a while to mull over options and though - of course- I don't expect them to reveal details of contracts and negotiations, I do expect them to have done something other than wring their hands.

There was no indication from that interview that they have done anything.

Are you really that naive to think a higher paid CEO who is very experienced in the sports industry, knowing that NP has long covid has not started to plan for different eventualities. Just because he did not spell it on radio Bristol dose not mean its not been done. As pointed out elsewhere in words of our past CEO, for once he would have it correct, the situation is "fluid", and whilst its a very difficult position to be in, we have to accept and deal with it and see how NP's health progresses.

But you would rather portray they will be rushing to find the back of a fag packet to work it out on soon as they are not clever enough to think they might need a plan,

  10. I have added this to a couple of threads, but thought maybe it needs its own thread to discuss

It would appear that NP has been suffering from his illness much worse and longer than any of us knew and difficult to know the effect on the team. I can't see the club able to resolve the long term future any time soon, but feel prior to the Jan transfer window decisions will need to be made.

A lot has been said that CF needs help and if its not just the Cov result he is responsible for then that is urgently needed. Shakespere is the obvious answer, RG said we have not spoken to him, which means we still could.

Which got me to thinking, what about getting Tinman involved with the 1st team as interim manager or similar role. I know his previous attempt was not successful but very different circumstance and will have learnt a lot since, well respected by players, knows the young lads, will not cost and a no risk option

The basic truths being: the team is in turmoil, the manager is ill and we don't know when he's coming back and we have no plan other than to expose a recently appointed assistant by putting him in sole charge of the situation.

So you expect the CEO of a company to spell out any plans they are considering for various possible scenario's on a radio interview? apart from the fact contract / legally could be difficult negotiations to be had, but we are in a period of short term uncertainty until NP feels well enough to continue or we get to a situation where changes have to be made.

With regards to Shakespeare he said no discussions were being had, does not mean they are not going to be

The person Gt could have asked about coming in and giving support and may be a good short term solution is Tinman

If it ends up being Colin we are gonna see some real dark arts football till the end of the season

Problem is if Colin comes to the end of the season, its the players he brings in January window to fit his style that we will then be stuck with

Think you might find running a club in the Championship creates a debt as next to none tend to be run at a profit , so whilst level of debt is down decisions at least we have someone prepared to keep funding championship football.

Go and see how many clubs make a profit

I don't get it.......there are 18 clubs above us,some with a lot less average gates than we get, and yet it only seems to be us struggling financially (not to mention on the pitch )! Why is that ?

Because Ashton sold the family silver and invested the money whilst being wine and dined in knightsbridge on some prem cast offs on huge wages and fees

Managers like Mark Robins wasn’t wanted in the main and look what he’s doing at Coventry. Blackpool and Luton doing well also. Their managers wouldn’t have been wanted. All of those teams have a style and a plan that they execute well. Must be nice!

All 3 of those teams have been built and then promoted from L1, based on hard work and team spirit. You are either able to maintain that momentum in the Championship or you start investing in higher wage more expensive players which is sometimes when it starts to go wrong. Bit like when we 1st came up to where we are now.

It's not about being sensitive over those things in themselves it's about seeing the gradual changes that are being made over time and instead of just ignoring it thinking "what comes next?". Simple things many supporters do not notice is that if English Rugby ignore our fixtures and decree that Bristol are at home the same weekend as us then one team (usually Bristol) plays Friday and the other Sunday. Stadium rules do not allow Friday and Saturday consecutive day fixtures. The rules are that Bristol get first choice on the fixtures not us - English Premier Rugby rules. Sunday fixtures are a complete pain in the arse for many supporters and so there you have a direct example of rugby affecting football. Hasn't happened this season so far, granted but has happened before. Our only home Sunday fixture at the moment is Millwall which is simply because the Police wouldn't police the game on New Years Day.

Small price to pay for the income towards stadium costs it generates!

By the way I 1000% do have an agenda, you are right about that, an agenda which simply wants to go down to Ashton Gate on a Saturday and actually ENJOY watching the football on offer at least SOME OF THE TIME. I have little interest in the business side of the game, it's FOOTBALL that made me support the club in the first place and all I am really interested in. I can promise you that if the next 18 months of football is the same quality as the last three years I certainly won't be laying out my season ticket money out of blind loyalty for the club. Feel free to disagree but it's my money, my choice at the end of the day. I owe Mr Lansdown nothing........and I'm speaking as someone who completely understands the scale of job and the issues with players that Nige and Curtis have on their plates.

Don't think me or any one else would disagree that we want to enjoy our football and everyone can go or not, but that is not what the discussion was about

Nothing to do with Rugby pictures. Twitter account - Ashton Gate Stadium home of Bristol Bears and Bristol City. The club who have been here 8 years are now the first name on the website. We are also SECOND PRIORITY on fixtures, that is fact not my thoughts passed off to suit my agenda. Go and have a read of English Premiership Rugby stadium requirements. The longer this Bristol Sport thing has gone on the less I am liking it to be perfectly honest - there is little benefit to us in terms of funds and we are seeing that right now - both Bristol RFC and ourselves pay rent to Steve Lansdown's holding company and I see little in the way of additional funds that can be reinvested into football in line with the rules of FFP.

Again, trying to pass off thoughts as facts, you have no clue the cost of running the stadium versus with or without rugby and impact on BCFC, although it does stand to reason that having rugby is generating substantial income, and if that is going back to SL, well good it helps to offset when he is putting his hand in his pocket to cover the football clubs huge losses each year.

Are you really that sensitive a soul to be upset that one name is above the other on twitter, with regards fixtures how has that ever affected us, if it has its passed me a most supporters by as we seem to play all our games, just part of letting rugby use our stadium.
