Barnsley was the game before the game before he came in. He took charge for Swansea, not Boro and got 6 points over his first 4 games (WLLW) to get us to 48 points.

He did a fine job but tbh we'd have likely been safe whoever came in.

Ok he was in the stands at Boro, which knowing the character of the man was enough of a boost for the players to put in a very very good performance, night and day from the Barnsley game

With respect, when Holden was sacked we had 39 points from 30 games and were closer to the play offs than the relegation zone.  After he was sacked, we took 12 points from our remaining 16 games (W3 D3 L10), including 0 wins, 3 draws and 7 defeats in our last ten games.

I’m not saying there shouldn’t have been a change of manager, Holden was after all on a poor run of six defeats in all competitions, but the notion that Pearson saved us from relegation is far-fetched in the extreme.  Only 44 points were needed to avoid relegation that season and we already had 39 when Holden was sacked so we actually only needed 5 more points to be safe.   What happened was that our position deteriorated considerably after Holden was sacked, but thankfully not enough to see us relegated.

I will never forget the game before Pearson came in.

We played Barnsley at home, barely got out of our half and had our club captain in tears at the end of the game. If we only needed 5 more to be points to be safe then we probably would have got them somehow over 16 games, but Pearson came in and got them straightaway. He definitely saved us at least from any sign of a relegation battle.

'Severnside Derby' - what a load of crap that is.

We don't like eachother much, but I hate this term for this match. Always seems like we care more about them than they do us as well (alas Swindon towards City).

I would say there is a clear correlation between the use of 'Severnside Derby' starting maybe 10 years ago and the watering down of the rivalry.

I agree with your second point and it's no doubt as they have Swansea as their main derby every year whereas ours is Cardiff

We’re playing “another one of those teams”, aren’t we!

Re the no10/Twine, I’d like to see what this looks like without Twine this season.

Is this the “double-10” with Twine and Knight either side behind Tommy that we saw against Watford (and v Wednesday albeit with Mehmeti and Knight)?  This has been built on a back-3 / WBs (hybrid) set-up.

Or is it a more normal no10 that we’ve seen based on the back-4 system, where Knight has played close to Conway?

No surprise to see us marooned alone as slow in possession and poor at keeping the ball. Neither one thing nor the other.

Where on that chart is Manning trying to get us? More up with Ipswich/Coventry I hope, not boring everyone with possession football like Swansea or Southampton but retaining it somewhat whilst passing directly through the lines

But, an important but, does that mean that the “club” are paying lip-service to the ambition stated to be in the PL?

    Are we really PL ready?

Just imagine we snook into the POs and won promotion this season (yippeeeee).  How geared up do you think we are to “pivot” as a whole club to battling to stay in the PL in 24/25?

Academy prospects - we now need them to be PL players in the making.

Recruitment - can we quickly pull together a list of realistic targets able to compete in the PL.  Who in the club even knows what a PL player looks like (you know what I mean)?

    Etc.

Thats not me trying to put a downer on it, I think as fabs we look at our club and think it’s come a long way in recent years, and it has, but it’s where it is, kinda because of where it’s at.

I agree with all this and have often wondered what our recruitment would look like if we ever made it.

Are we really any different whatsoever to our peer clubs though who I perceive to be the likes of Coventry, Stoke, Cardiff, Birmingham, etc. Similar supporter base, similar sized grounds, ok maybe some have recent Prem experience but what would they do that we wouldn't? How are Luton doing it? How did Swansea survive so long? What about Burnley who despite being a smaller club (certainly at the time in 2009 compared to where we are now) are as close a comparison to what we hope to do, midtable Champ for many many many many years then snuck in through the play offs one year and haven't really looked back.

Yes, me. Brian is a club legend and anyone who went to Liverpool on that special night will agree. He may have not had the right temperament for management but has shown himself to be a very good judge of players. The development of our academy is also evidence of this. Our current problems seem to stem from this sacking of a much admired and respected manager with a great force of character and replacing him with a technical underachiever who lacks experience and strength of personality.  The old motto of “you should either have brains or hire brains” could also be usefully changed to “you should either have experience or hire experience “.
we really need both brains and experience and we had those in the previous management team. I would wager that they were more expensive than Manning and Hogg - and that the change has more to do with saving costs rather than ambition. I expect that Brian is simply trying to fulfill his brief from the Lansdowns, who thought they could save cash and advance the prospects of the club.

I can't believe you started your defence of his role as Tecknical Director with mention of something he did in an absolutely unrelated job 30 years ago

  9. A lot of the 'no's' would keep us in the division though.

I am mightily concerned that we will replace them with flakier players that is going to put us in threat of relegation

No faith whatsoever in Tinnion and Manning
