    Football can be mercenary.

I know you are only making a point but that’s one of the most ‘No shit, Sherlock’ statements.
This whole ‘Let’s pretend we’re football managers’ stuff really gets me when it’s to do with selling players, particularly when they are our best ones.
The whole thing is a food chain that cements Man City at the top and everyone in a nice little rank order beneath them. We sell to X who are higher than us. They sell to Y who are higher than them and then they sell to Man City who win the treble. Simples.
the only thing that upsets the gravy train is a bigger Sheikh or oligarch coming along. Or…… a few youngsters kicking on at the same time alongside clever recruitment. So basically if we’re going to do anything then we don’t sell him or Vyner or Tanner or Bell.
However because football is mercenary and because we’re a selling club, we will stay where we are in the food chain.

At least we get some Saturday 3pm kick-offs

  2. There was a pair of Great tits nesting, but they've now had to move on. Every morning I'd admire the pair of Great tits in my garden, and being on my own it was nice to have nature to appreciate. I
had hoped that more tits would be on view, but that's unlikely with the bushes gone. Do we really want to be a city that values temporary structures over nature? It's too late for my tits.
but we should set a precedent of say 'no" to this happening in future.

Never mind pal, come every other Saturday there will be at least 11 tits on display.

Because I've seen enough of him as a player to know what his ability.

I've written scout reports on him to provide to three different managers, one of which ended up signing him.

I hope Twine signs for us now (I doubt it because of his wage), but if he did our fans would absolutely love him.

If not him, then there's lots out there. Swift again maybe wages might be an issue but West Brom are having to cut their cloth, Azaz a realistic one I like and have reported on before. There are good options out there to replace, and ones that I think would impact the first team more than Scott does currently.

    You're stringing us along.

  4. Paul Barber (Brighton) was asked on a very revealing BT sport interview whether he was talking to other clubs whose short period of PL success had ended in disappointment. The implication was that he could avoid the pitfalls by doing so.
He said that clubs rarely talk to one another about strategy. He continued by saying that they just had to continue doing what they thought was right. Seems they’re on the right track.
Sounded very switched on. I bet Spurs can’t believe they let him go.

As I’m sure many on here know, he was married to Lesley Crowther’s daughter - LC used to star in Crackerjack with Peter Glaze.

LC used to live in Corston, near Bath (not Wiltshire), and I had the pleasure of meeting them all one afternoon at the village fête.

He really was a very friendly and approachable young man, not at all like his stage image, as, indeed, was LC, but he (Phil L) was so obviously very high on something.

    A very enjoyable afternoon, though.

Phil L to Les C ‘Can I have your daughter’s hand in marriage?’

LC: ‘Well, you’ve had everything else!  You might as well have her hand too’

  6. In today’s press, de Zerbi states that he’s getting ‘used to working with algorithms in the transfer market’. But adds that he wants to ‘watch the player, to understand that the player has the right quality and characteristics.’

obviously Brighton’s  transfer policy has been very successful and relies on data and a recruitment team which is constant and not subject to the vagaries of hire and fire.
it only seems like moments since we regarded clubs like Brighton (throw in Brentford, Brighton et al) as rivals or indeed inferior. Their recruitment policies have allowed them to kick on.

Does Tinman have this great relationship with Algo? How much a role does data play in our recruitment?

Our youth policy has paid huge dividends this season and is really satisfying.

If we can hang on to our best young  players, then great, but in reality we’re a selling club. Therefore it’s stating the obvious  that getting the right blend of recruitment is key.

How good is our version of Algo?

Looking forward to now spending my Saturdays with my son. One Team in Bristol. ?⚪⚫?

Unless your son lives in LA, take him to a few games. Best dad lad bonding exercise there is. Win or lose.

  8. As an aside, ManU are often just ‘United’ even when they are playing Newcastle, West Ham or any other United.
A bloke in the barbers today was talking about Sheffield and Blackburn when discussing who would be promoted from the Championship.
If he’d said United or Rovers, would I have known who he was talking about? Probably.

However if he mentioned Town when discussing League 1, I may have struggled.

Sounds like they've been priced out of Bellingham so maybe they are willing to buy a first teamer (someone like Maddison?) and then take a punt on our Alex as the next big thing

Why go somewhere if you’re not going to play? If good enough it doesn’t matter how old you are. However for any young player to develop, they need to be playing quite a few games a season otherwise their career just stalls.
I hope his advisors are savvy enough to realise that and choose a club that gives youth a chance.
Dortmund would be a good choice. After all he’s already playing overseas.

talking of Watford 15 years ago, was that the season we were both running neck and neck and we took over 4000 to Vicarage Road just before Christmas? What an atmosphere that was.

  12. We are West Country and proud but not that far fu££ing west. There’s a bloody sea or two between us and Ireland. We’re not Irish and never will be. I like the Irish but don’t want my team to become Irish. It’s pants and we must get rid.

On their fans forum they see Wilder as a Nigel Pearson figure. To firefight and steady the ship

yes the outward trip to Calais was steady; fire under control and sea calm.  But on the way  back, the fire got Wilder and the sea got Wilder and the directors got Wilder. By the time the ship docked, it had all gone Pozzi and Wilder was toast, soggy toast. They were only gone three hours.

I should have said I wasn’t specifically commenting on that situation, it was more of a general point about swearing inside the ground .

O dear;  page 3 of this thread has suddenly got serious. Page 1 and 2: best belly laugh I've had for ages.

Yes, this isn't some noddy TFG company they have been going for over a century, the fact they have a decent website with a huge selection with it being in stock is a rarity for us!

They are already announcing new clubs they will supply for next season:

    https://www.rochdaleafc.co.uk/news/2023/february/dale-announce-oneills-as-new-kit-supplier/

    https://www.falkirkherald.co.uk/sport/football/falkirk-fc-club-announce-oneills-as-new-kit-partner-with-promise-of-bespoke-strips-3951483

Rochdale and Falkirk;: not exactly Nike or Adidas then is it? Having said that, we really must get rid of the white sleeves, whatever brand it is.
