I disagree with the highlighted statement Spudski (apart from the not playing them for years bit),

There are many aspects to what makes a particular team your 'rivals' but I would say that the fact that Rovers are the closest league club to us geographically is a big factor. Imo local rivalry is about bragging rights and the pleasure of doing better, whether it be in one game or over a season, than your closest neighbours. The fact that we have been way ahead of them on and off the pitch for so long just adds to my enjoyment of being a BCFC fan.

Many people say Cardiff are our rivals now, I cant stand Cardiff but I see them as a regional rival like Swindon. After those scumbags beat us 6-0 at the gate the only grief I got at work over the following week was from gasheads, my only comfort was thinking "thank **** it wasnt them beating us 6-0".

Gasheads take great pleasure from our misfortunes and I take great pleasure from their misfortunes and nothings better than a weekend when we win and they lose irrespective of which divisions we are in, just my opinion of course.

Ahhhh...Good old 'Schadenfreude', delighting in others' misfortune. The idea that when people around us have bad luck, we look better to ourselves. Research has found that people with low self-esteem are more likely to feel 'schadenfreude' than are people who have high self-esteem.

Rise above them mate, don't even get into a conversation with them...it makes them feel even more unimportant. Rising to their bait...fuels their ego.

BRISTOL Rovers are our rivals. The clue is in their name.

I for one am loving their current misfortune as it doesn't take much to imagine what those **** s would be like if the roles were reversed. In fact they aint getting half as bad as we would - guaranteed - so the more that join in the merrier.

I hope they finish bottom and implode

I know your right mate but even so, going to work tomorrow doesnt seem such a drag. I suppose they will be expecting me to rub it in... perhaps I'll do the opposite and sympathise, that will probably piss them off even more

I agree entirely. They were dishing it out earlier this season when we were bottom and they seemed to be doing quite well. Thankfully both of us experienced a change of fortunes. Their's especially has been especially (and hilariously) dramatic - they took 18 points from the first 12 games, then a mere 12 from the next 22 games. They've lost 8 out of their last 9 games and I'm loving every minute of it.

Of course they are our rivals. Maybe those questioning this haven't been to many matches between us. And we've never been more than 1 division above them. UNTIL .........:winner_third_h4h: :winner_third_h4h: :winner_third_h4h:

I for one will through a party if the gas go down (wont beleive it, till it happens).

Gasheads crawl under my skin, (not all, but a good few) - same old BS 1982, that one time they beat us to title etc etc (work collegue had a print out of that league table up on the whiteboard at work only last year.

The pic of those scum down at ashton gate after we lost out to hull (The good night irene, it was all a dream).

Oh if that day comes i and many others will saviour the moment!

Everyone to their own of course.

I find the whole Rovers fixation rather tedious too... They are not our rivals. We haven't played them for years. They just happen to be another team that play in our City...they don't even register on my radar. Singing about them, only makes them look more important than they really are. Just ignore them...it's far more insulting. Sing about the City and getting behind the boys. Tbh...the imagination of songs and chants sung by our fans is rather very poor compared to years gone by. They'll be texting their songs next... :tumbleweed:

They clearly are. If you offered me a victory over United in the FA Cup next season or a victory over the Gas it's the Gas every time. Just because we haven't played them in a few years it does not mean they are not our rivals! I am not obsessed with them but them getting relegated does please me. However what I really disagree with is what I've quoted below...

A R*vers relegation is equal to a City promotion for me.

We are safe so watching Rovers self destruct is better than sex.

Loving every second of it!

Really?! Don't get me wrong I'll love it if they go down and cannot stand them but how can you say that. Winning promotion is everything and the Gas going down would not even be close to emulating the joys of promotion.

What a great match and result, yesterday!

BUT: I just find it UNBELIEVABLE to hear so much energy being put into celebrating the Gas' misfortunes, rather than cheering on our team, and enjoying the experience of a 4 - 1 win away from home. Even at half time, with City 3 - 0 up, the concourse reverberated to "The Gas are going down...." rather than "Can we play you every week?" or other positive chanting in support of the only team in Bristol that really matters.

Personally, I have no problem at all with Rovers - so long as they are at least a division below us. And, revolutionary though it may sound, I'd rather see local fans wearing the colours of Yeovil, Swindon, Bath City, FGR - or even Blue and White quarters - rather than replica shirts representing the latest "top" teams that are miles away, and have no local connections whatsoever.

Rant over...after an uninspiring season, now let the good times roll, with another win in the sequence, against Pompey!

I haven't looked at the comment below because when i go into work tomorrow i can give some stick to a good friend who is a gas head, when we were bottom it happened at the same time as the Chilean mine thing, and he turned round to me and said you are deeper than them in the shit, so every Monday morning know i say Chilean, why are we mocking them? (fun and laughter) i can't believe you have said this.

Well you've just made every Gas fan very happy, by making them more important than a win over one of the biggest and best clubs in the world. I just don't get that small town mentality. No offense, but it's no wonder we don't move forward as a club, if that's how fans feel.

I would love them to be in the same Division, a build up to a Derby is great, come on i would love to see when we had not beat them for years, Holloaway missed penalty and Donaway diving header last few minutes again, i felt good that night and beating them in a game feels as good as promotion IMO

I dont really see your point mate.,, Its tradition that Rovers and City hate each other, its nothing to do with City fans having a small town mentality! Its just like saying West ham fans have a small town mentality for hating Millwall and Newcastle fans have a small town mentaility for hating boro and so on. I actually feel sorry for clubs like Reading and Plymouth who have no real rivals, i would hate that to be us.

I love the rivarly between us and them, yes we havnt played them for years but the buzz i would get from seeing those scum in the east end is greater than against anyother side!

For the hundredth time you're quoting Gas propaganda and disinformation. We were more than a division above the Gas from 1906-11 when we were a top flight club and the Gas weren't even in league division 2 !!!!!

Mate, I appreciate everyone has their own opinion but football is tribal. Always has been and (hopefully) always will be. They are the nearest tribe and not only that, as you mention are in the same City. I'm sure the vast majority of fans of clubs in the same city especially take delight in the other club's misfortune (to a point)..

Do I hope the sags go down, hell yeah, but do I hope they go out of business ? No way. Like someone else said I respect fans who support local teams rather than Man U, Liverpool etc. That's what keeps the game interesting and passionate. But the utopia you seem to want I don't ever see happening in Football.

Put it this way, if we were in rovers div and it was the last game of the season at ashton gate, say we were playing yeovil and we were safe, but the sags needed us to beat them to stay up, i would be at Ashton Gate that day singing Yeovil as loud as my lungs would allow!

It looks like i'm in the minority here...but tbh, I would love to rekindle the old rivalry. At the moment they are insignificant.

Personally, I would have preferred they got promotion to the Championship, and that we dicked them home and away in the league. That would bring real joy to me, and worth bragging rights.

Ok, it is the Gas, but seeing all these teams from the west, playing so badly,it doesn't do our reputation much good. We all get thrown in the same melting pot, and teams from the West are seen as shite.

I'd much prefer the Gas, Swindon and Plymouth to be in our league. Playing in some real Derby's is a buzz...I miss that.

That's absolute bollocks. What because we hate our rivals we don't move forward as a Club? Good one. It's not remotely small town and as others have pointed out West Ham love beating Millwall and Villa love beating Brum. It has absolutely nothing to do with the direction we as a Club take.

A blue perspective...

If things were the other way round (stop sniggering!) then Rovers fans would be just the same. I don't think there's any problem with fans taking pleasure in their rivals' misfortune. Admittedly it pisses me off the amount of City songs that get sung at the Mem when there are FAR bigger problems in our own house but it's to be expected.

I'd echo what was said higher up though, whilst I'd raise a wry smile if the tables were turned, I wouldn't ever wish City to go out of business. Any football fan can associate themselves with how much 'their' team means to them and I wouldn't wish the extinction of someone's side on anyone.

A certain Andrew Cole scored in a game, if my memory is right Man U beat Spurs 2-1, to stop Arsenal winning it, Mr Gow my lungs will be bursting the same as yours.

What the **** are you on about?

I have this Bristol City page as one of my favourites, and within two clicks I can see the corresponding Laugh at Rovers page. I don't "know" the stats but it takes no time at all to look them up. Even you must admit their decline is spectacular. On second thoughts, you probably won't.

This doesn't mean I'm more interested in them than City. But if some of us want to enjoy the fact that our LOCAL RIVALS are in freefall, why play the misery guts and poor cold water over it??

We all support City because we want to. No one forces us to do it. If we can't have a bit of fun along the way, then what's the point?? We'll all end up as miserable as you.

Really? I'd much rather see us promoted to the prem than watch the gas go down.

I think the celebrations across the City of Bristol might be more pronounced with the former as well. You won't see many city fans with ticker tape in the streets if rovers are relegated.

I went to a Cheltenham Town vs Rovers game couple of seasons ago (sat with chelt away), at half time City were losing and after the tannoy annouced it the t*ssa's roared the place down in glee and delight

Don't think for a second theyre nice people

Anyone remember the staged battles, I remember one famous one in the park outside AG years ago, also the one at the memorial more recently where they invaded the pitch trying to get to the away city supporters, there's no love lost there my friend, no love

I'm not miserable mate, quiet the opposite. I just find it funny that people care so much about Rovers demise. Each to their own and all. But Like studies have shown, people who enjoy other peoples demise, and get pleasure from it, generally have low self esteem themselves.

I don't find it fun, and tbh, it shows the mindset of many fans on here, when one of the longest threads is about the demise of the Sag's, rather than concentrating on the positives of our own team. Say's it all really. And when you hear more songs at the ground, sung about the Rovers, then i'm sure it has such a positive effect on our own players!!!Not... It's like saying to them...'We're ******* bored of you lot...we're gonna sing about something totally irrelevent to what's happening on the pitch. They might as well start a Mexican wave and really rub it in our own players faces. :disapointed2se: Pathetic...

Anyway...I hope it makes you feel better, personally, i couldn't give a shit. But i hear many fans who sit around me say, 'I wish our lot would stop singing about the Sag's so much, it's ******* boring'.
