where does that argument stop?

as Bearded-Red said "What about if Tesco offered us a multi million pound sponsorship deal on the basis that we start playing in Blue and White stripes? Where does it end?"

just because then fans cant match the offer doesn't we should have to take it lying down if we are unhappy about it!?

I would like to think the board members of our club would put history and tradition in front of money , if this hypothetical situation ever arose.

Clubs all over the country are receiving sponsorship for the naming rights of their stadia and SL has already gone on record as saying our proposed new stadium , will have a sponsored name. As far as I know no team has changed it's kit colour to suit a sponsor.

In this country.

There is precedent abroad, although it was after the Red Bull drinks company bought the whole club rather than just sponsoring it.

This is fantastic news... I now have a real reason to stop going now. **** football...it's all bollox these days. Money grabbers...**** the fans over again. And everyone goes along with it... We as fans really need to stop going to football. Right across the country...enough is enough. Let them fall on their swords...lets start again. I hope the whole thing implodes....

It will implode, and hopefully sooner rather than later.

I'm honestly dying for the likes of Man United and Chelsea and whoever else to bugger off and form a super league with Barcelona and AC Milan and all that lot so that the rest of us can get back to playing football without the silly kick off times and all the other ridiculousness that's now involved.

It this is true , then surely it can only benefit the club. Yes we would all love the name to remain the same , but as other have pointed out , it will always be Ashton Gate to us as St James' Park is to the Geordies. We need money to progress as a club and this is one way of attracting it.

I suppose the only other way is for everyone who's not happy to put their hands in their pockets and stump up the same amount of cash as any sponsor is willing to do.

This, it will still be Ashton Gate until it tumbles no matter what and if it gives us £ £ £ to either mount a challenge or keep us healty then so be it.

As disappointing as this would be surely everyone realises that to move forward commercially we have to be more competitive, this in turn gives us a bigger playing budget!

Its something that we have to deal with. Ashton Gate will always be that name to us the fans!

Doesnt matter what its called from a sponsorship point of view so long as we get wedge for the privilege of it.

It won't stop anyone (fans, players, the media) calling it Ashton Gate so whilst it is a shame, not a total disaster.

Us fans might not stop referring to it as Ashton Gate but the media certainly would.

City's opponents at ***************** today are Brighton.

****************** was rocking as Pitman volleyed home to complete his hat trick.

New signings on the way at ************************

Half time report from *************************

Twentyman, 'Ian calling us from ******************** with his after match thoughts' etc.

The 'Welcome to Ashton Gate' signs outside the ground would no doubt be changed to the new name, in fact if it's a name change the sponsor would probably insist all reference to AG as the ground's name was deleted by the club, including by players during interviews.

Not a total disaster? It would be as far as I'm concerned.

AS long as it isn't a utilities company. Imagine having British GAS as part of the name (shudders).

Tony Gayle still calls the geordies ground St James.

Well I will still be there whatever it is called, if we get 1m+ per season for the naming rights then that will help to buy better players and hence better results (hopefully).

I am old school but if my club is going to be successful, we have to move with the times I'm afraid.................old school football died years ago and it will never return until players wages are back to a sensible level.

A compelling argument.

The problem is that this has all come about because clubs are looking to differentiate themselves through income by whatever means.

The next logical step is to rename the club. Maybe in 10 years it will be "The Bristol City Big Macs".

10 years later, McDonalds FC.

I'm jumping ahead, but if clubs relentlessly chase money to stay ahead it is completely logical.

You could be right, we could end up like the NFL or NHL if players wages are not slashed soon........players & agents are killing football.

We may even be reduced to regional clubs in 50 years time, something like the County Championship in cricket.

The players & agents are the ones that can stop all this madness.

Too true sadly, but that's the nature of the the capitalist society we live in - every opportunity to market or commercialise something used to the max. I was in the post office the other day, buying some stamps, and the poor bloke behind the counter tried to sell me a credit card when I'd finished.

One of the biggest ironies of course, is that naming the team after a company is actually something that used to go on behind the old Iron Curtain - e.g. FC Carl Zeiss Jena.

Although it'll be sad to see AG renamed, it'll only be for a few years. When we move into the Lansdown Arena at Ashton Vale it'll be different anyway. No-one seems to mind stadium names like the Reebok, the Ricoh Arena, the KC Stadium etc. I would put in the proviso that it's only worth selling the naming rights for a decent sum though.

Tradition? History?

You may not have a problem with selling your soul to the devil but I do.

Maybe I'm in the backward minority that refuses to keep up with the times, but I would feel sick if I had to go to 'The KFC Arena' to watch City.

What about if Tesco offered us a multi million pound sponsorship deal on the basis that we start playing in Blue and White stripes? Where does it end?

The reality is then get your hand in your pocket and offer more to keep it as the gate.

If they had changed the name 10 years before you were born you probably wouldn't call it AG now.

Give it 30 years and the young 'uns won't either.

I hope the whole thing implodes....

And it will, you can be pretty sure about that one if clubs carry on doing what they are doing (which they will)

Football in 30 years time will be unrecognisable if it is still here at all.
