Could Ashton Gate Be Renamed Next Season?

I'm all for the club being run on a sound financial basis. Renaming our home is where I draw the line though. Yes, it's emotion over logic but that's what football's basically about. I'd be a bit less irritated about naming a new ground for a sponsor but it would still be distasteful to me.

It would be slightly easier to stomach if it were a sponsor with close ties to the club (HL) that would remain so for years to come, but any random company that doesn't give a shit about the club yet buys naming rights to AG will be getting no custom from me.

Our income from this sort of deal is likely to be tiny at AG, I'd rather do without.

Tradition? History?

You may not have a problem with selling your soul to the devil but I do.

Maybe I'm in the backward minority that refuses to keep up with the times, but I would feel sick if I had to go to 'The KFC Arena' to watch City.

What about if Tesco offered us a multi million pound sponsorship deal on the basis that we start playing in Blue and White stripes? Where does it end?

As I've stated on another thread or two even when we do get a new stadium, I will still only refer to it as 'Ashton Vale'. I absolutely refuse to kowtow to commercialism. I don't care how much money it makes for the club. Sponsorship is a modern day curse, and i want nothing to do with it.

While i'd much rather it didn't bare the name of some crappy business or other, it'll always be Ashton Gate. Plus, let us hypothesise; what if the money from this deal (presuming it's not the bullshit it so far appears) allows us to sign the quality midfielder we've been looking for and not only do we reach the play offs, we play good football doing it?

What about the Welsh club with the ridiculous name of 'Total Network Solutions'? What on earth do the fans chant? And what was their name before?

Previously known as Llansantffraid FC.

I assume they chant '"TNS, TNS".

The Hargreaves Lansdown Arena?

"They" give us £12m a year sponsorship, meaning under financial fair play we can show our income as rather high?....

Looks like we will find out on 17th May..?

But as with Etihad you could be not far fom truth here.

It will always be Ashton Gate to all, but needs and time must

You could be right, we could end up like the NFL or NHL if players wages are not slashed soon........players & agents are killing football.

We may even be reduced to regional clubs in 50 years time, something like the County Championship in cricket.

The players & agents are the ones that can stop all this madness.

Seriously mate? With all respect...the only people who can change Football are the fans.

If you went to work and could make Millions of £'s every year and have people fall at your feet in blind fanatical support...why would you change it?

They are going to milk it for all it's worth...and find more ways of doing it.

They don't give a shit about the fans, tradition, Stadiums, heritage or history. It is purely about making money, as quickly as possible.

The only way football will change is if the fans stop going and stop subscribing to Sky.

Most complain...and most still keep going out of blind loyalty. What they are actually doing is making football worse.

Football needs a revolution from the fans.

Because if I didn't change my ways, I would be out of a job.......A LOT of footballers are going to be out of work in August and clubs are cutting back BIG TIME to fit in with FFP.

Obviously the best will still get the wages but most will have to take a huge pay cut IMO, we are starting to see the bust now and it is long overdue.

Cut your wages or not have a job, that is the question they have to ask themselves.

Can't see that happening tbh... Footballers aren't the sharpest tool in the box. Agents will keep fighting for better wages. Short term contracts will happen. Players will run them down, then move on getting signing on fees. They will constantly be looking for the best deal. It happens all the time in the lower Leagues.

Unless it's Clarke Carlisle.

Would you all object if it was renamed the scrumpy stadium;

Who cares, it doesn't matter what it's called. things and names change.

Must be quiet in Bristol, for some people to get worked up over this.

Oh no it's the end of the world as we know it Ashton Gate stadium has changed its name.

Get real.

Probably similar to that other bastion of capitalist evilness PSV eindhoven, or Bayer Leverkusen.

Yeah, but I think there'll be less contracts going. I think most clubs will initially be looking to get value for money by having fewer players in the squad, rely on youth and loans in a crisis. This competition for professional contracts will lead to wages dropping

I do agree with a lot of your sentiments though, but I personally think that the trade off that's been made for the 'soul' of football is improved quality of play (perhaps not this season!). Progress is not always for the best but it is inevitable

Or Vauxhall Motors?! Dagenham & Redbridge?! I imagine if you drill down into the history and tradition of lots of clubs they were set up as works teams. That's definitely the case on the continent

So if City were sponsored by Levi's you would buy Wranglers ??? That makes sense !!

It does matter, if you don't think it does then your wrong.

I am sure that if you asked everyone most people would prefer AG

the only thing at debate surely is whether its worth the money...

no one would want it changed if we got nothing for it so if "it doesn't matter what its called" is your honest opinion then please explain further as you look ridiculous?

Its just a name, the stadium will still be there, and I don't really care what it's officially called. I'm sorry if that upsets you .I may look ridiculous but that doesn't worry me either, most of the time I am.

Here are my thoughts. If this rumour is true then it could be a clever attempt around Financial Fair Play. Stadium Sponsorship is allowed under the rules so say a Director or Chairman wants to invest he just uses his company for extortionate naming rights. I believe Man City did this.

There are always new threads popping up talking about buying this or that player. The money has to come from somewhere and we as fans don't want ticket price rises so something has to give. In this case it may be naming rights. Lets imagine that the money gained helps us become successful. Surely losing a small piece of history to create history is a good trade off?

Spot on , as Roger Walters once said

And did we tell you the name of the game, boy

we call it Riding the Gravy Train.
