Bristol is held back also by a self serving group of so called businessmen, nothing will change until the people in power start listening to the majority and not just those that have most financial backing, who seemingly only appear concerned with their own or their fellow funny handshake enthusiasts' bank balance and not what is best for this city.

As per usual we'll most likely end up with a second rate arena in a place that's going to be a nightmare for parking and those that are not able to get around easy, you only have to look at the centre to see how this amateur run council operate, they had to opportunity to restore the docks and turn it into a tourist attraction, what did we get! Some crappy fountains that rarely work.

Bristol City Council is run by people who move here because it's a nice place to live, George Ferguson, Daniella Radice, Gary Hopkins, Peter Crispin etc. They know how to work the system to stop any development which they oppose. They have friends in high places, clever legal minds giving advice. They seem to be able to out-manoeuvre local businessmen to suit their own agenda.

Any city where 22 people can out vote 30,000 will never progress.

Cardiff is run by the Welsh for the Welsh

To be fair to the council, they've actually done their part by granting planning permission for both the City and Rovers stadiums, as well as the "enabling" supermarket developments.  What's holding them back is a handful of local residents and the absurd levels of influence they're allowed to have in English law.

The problem with Bristol is its success. Money and jobs flow, so it's very easy to resist change, or not strongly desire big redevelopment.

Compare that to Cardiff - a grim place thay was crying out for redevelopment.

This is pretty much it.

Grim, jobless cities get government grants and investment, which is why Leeds and Newcastle - for example - have much better transport networks than us and Cardiff gets investment in a gert big stadium.

Bristol's success economically and attractive areas have led to a large incoming middle-class population too. The sort of people who object to anyone building on a swampy dog's toilet, for example.

Went to Cardiff last weekend for the first time in 10 years. It's changed a lot. Vibrant city, worth having a walk around and spending a whole weekend there to take everything in. Lovely train journey accompanied by the sight of the Millenium Stadium as you arrive.

What's Bristol got? A derelict post office, bus lanes and TOO MANY NIMBYS!

George ******** Ferguson

Cardiff had very strong leadership at the time it built its stadium, I think it's a matter of having somebody at the top who's not going to take no for an answer. That's the biggest single factor when you look at cities that succeed.

I don't like to write things off as Nimbyism. You need to look for the right sites for delivery of projects. It's not surprising there's controversy when we're talking about building supermarkets or building on greenfield sites.

Ferguson completely demonstrating his lack of foresight and backbone. What a pathetic excuse of a human being he is.

"When you boil it down, the difference is whether there's determined political leadership to see it through".

Not sure I agree with this statement.  The council have backed Ashton Vale.  You can be as determined as you like but at the end of the day, current legislation has allowed the small band of nimbies to prevent the progress of the club and the city as a whole.  Far be it from me to defend the council but in this case it is the law that is at fault.

Add to that list the tram system that was bombed by the German airforce in 1940 and 74 years later Bristol Council have still not got it back up and running. Add to that Bristol's finest public buildings (schools, park layouts, central library, swimming baths, suspension bridge etc) that were all built before World War 2. Bristol is, perhaps, the only English city not to have progressed with public amenities after World War 2.

I have to say, despite us as a club hating the taffs they are actually a right old laugh. All the Welsh i know love the banter about the culture and the accents from both sides of the bridge. Of course the rivalry will always be there, we are BCFC!
