Foakes should play but I genuinely can’t see who can be dropped. Going to have to just hope Bairstow improves. He hasn’t kept for nearly a year

They’ll just have to pick two from Ducket, Crawley and Bairstow.

Whichever two look in the best nick get the nod

Who would have thought it would be very tough on the body to go from full time white ball cricketer straight back into test cricket?

Yep - and using a different ball with a seam raised higher than a white ball. Commentators saying the Moeen could have a sore callous on his spinning finger.

Yeah that won’t happen. Crawley looked good first innings. Duckett has done very well since coming in and Bairstow plays. Plus if you drop an opener there isn’t another opener.

Imagine if Pearson said “we will look to entertain, get people of their feet, increase the chances of winning and losing, winning is the bottom priority though and if we don’t win, oh well”.   There would be pandemonium.  I’m not saying Stokes isn’t mainly doing the right thing but in my view he has gone a bit far in recent matches.

Results speak for themselves, 11 wins from 13 after 1 in 17 or whatever it was. Difference here is that Australia are the best team in the world and I feel like we have got selection wrong - need a point of difference in attack on this pitch (Wood) and I’d have found a way to sneak Foakes in.

How many matches did Crawley take to become an "opener" ?

Stokes has yet to lose a series under his and McCullums leadership. it’s a ‘no fear’ psychology that the’ve instilled into the players and several players have said how refreshing the new approach is.

Other Test nations are very aware of Englands new playing style. The Aussies have been vocal about how risky it is- we’ll see when this Ashes series is done.

Results up to now have been excellent. He got it wrong in the last test and also this one though.  It sounds like if Wood was going to play it would be in place of Anderson.  Big call go not pick Jimmy. Not sure how you sneak Foakes in really. I’m yet to see a 1-7 batting order that’s better with Foakes in it

We beat Ireland in the last Test? And I think a little too early to say he’s got it wrong it this Test. I’d have picked Wood in place of Robinson if Wood is fit enough but I’m sure he’ll be in for the next game, I certainly wouldn’t have dropped Jimmy. I’d move Bairstow to open in place of Crawley / Duckett but appreciate JB doing a fantastic job where he is in the order now

Sorry I meant New Zealand. Forgot about the weird one test against Ireland

Ah lads, you've done nothing but win for the last while. I'd prefer to have Foakes if I was picking the team, but if Bairstow gets runs in the second innings and England win, everyone will forget about the drops.

Not watching today, how is the pitch looking? Might Aussie have problems batting last?

Pitch looking dead, Cummings playing Broad’s short stuff with ease until he tried hitting every ball out the ground.

Moeen did get one to turn big time early on so if his hand hasn’t fallen off by then, he’s been fined already for spraying something on it, it’ll be tough batting fourth

Edit: it’s gone dark and thundery which might assist the Aussie bowlers

Joe Root might be our most important player for the rest of this match.

Forgetting his batting for a moment, with Moeen looking unlikely to bowl a shed load of overs Root might be asked to bowl more than he would have been expecting. He’s got wickets before for us.
