The official Bristol City FC v Manchester United in the Carabao Cup match day thread (Christmas Special)

Good morrow folks.

Tonight it's the big one, the special one, the giant slaying one...

It's MAN YOO HOME!!!

And as it's Christmas, my good friend @havanatopia may also post a lil something of his own here later so everyone is happy!!!

So let's get to it!!!

Manchester United is a club located in Manchester, a shit hole oop north. Manchester is famous for Oasis, Man City and all probably one of the most famous clubs in the world, Man Utd. They play at Old Trafford aka the Theatre of Dreams. Tonight they play at the Theatre of Gifs. (Credit: someone on Twitter - thanks!!!)

Man U were formed as Newton Heath in the 1870s and changed to Man United in 1902 and have spent 107 years at Old Trafford, also famous for having a hydrolic tunnel that can be lifted to allow high sided vehicles access to the pitch...

Currently owned by the Glazer family, they had to restructure debt 7 years ago of £716.5 million pounds and we moan about debts at City of 3 million pounds!
The Glazers are not popular at old Trafford. In fact fans here wear gold and green (the colours of Newton Heath) to show their dis-satisfaction at the club's ownership.

Perhaps the more ardent anti Lansdowners should take note at the situation with the Glazers and Manchester United and how our own situation could be much worse.

However, something the fans can't argue about is the value of the club which is estimated at £2.86 billion and is the most valuable football club in the world. Largely due to the club being popular not just in the UK but also across Asia. Fans from Malaysia, Thailand, Japan etc make the trip to visit Old Trafford in their droves.

And now the boss... "the special one..." Jose Mourinho aka the Silver Fox of Premiership managers.

Jose played as a MF as a nipper and stayed in and around the portuguese equivalent of our L1 and L2. But his greater success has come as a manager. Assistant manager at Porto and Barca, he ruled the roost at Benfica before taking the reins properly at Porto (arch rivals of Benfica) and the rest is history. Champions league, FA Cups, League Cups. You name it, he's won it.

Jose is no stranger to controversy. In recent weeks, an alleged bust up with Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson resulted in Jose being pelted with milk and water. Pleasant people aren't they these overpaid footballers?
However did you know the Jose has a criminal record for trying to bring his dog into the country without quarantining? He was arrested and given a caution and the dog was sent back to Portugal! According to Ian "I hate City" Holloway, every dog has its day but Jose's dog had a shit one that week...

Jose is an outspoken manager and has clashed heads with Arsene Wenger on a number of occasions. When Jose was involved in the Ashley Cole transfer saga, he called Arsene a "voyeur" and in later years, also called him a "specialist in failure". A stroke of bluntness is obvious in this one.

Jose's dress sense has also been much talked about. Perhaps LJ's style has come from him as Jose has also been seen wearing long felt jackets and coats for many years. LJ doesn't want to pick his football brain over a bottle of Mateus, he wants to hire Jose's stylist...

Fun fact: Did you know Jose can speak six languages? He can speak fluent portuguese, spanish, french, english, italian and catalan. In his earlier years he was also an interpreter for Sir Bobby Robson at Porto and Barcelona.

So truly a man of many talents so perhaps he is actually entitled to the nickname "special one".

All in all, tonight's game will be probably the biggest for 30 something years. We can expect to see something beautiful, glorious even. We have every chance of winning tonight, but even the optimists have to agree, we are not favourites, so chances are that our EFL cup run ends here. However, with the rub of the green, we could cause one of the biggest upsets in recent times.

My heart says loss, my brain says win so I'm going with a draw and a penalty shootout. Will we be England and screw it up or will we be any other country and win it? I can't decide.

Hasn't hit me yet for some reason. Once I see the teams out there I'll get the goosebumps as I do every match day except ramped up times infinity. Gonna interview a Man U fan after the match so hopefully they're not bragging about a drubbing. But then again I might get beat up if we somehow cause an upset for the ages. Man U through in ET.

A little pointer to the Dean Holden thread, just to put things in perspective.

'I saved this earlier, intending to post something humorous/sarcastic on the match day thread about Dean Holden being a plastic Manchester United fan.

'When Bristol City were paired with holders Manchester United in Wednesday's League Cup quarter-final tie, assistant head coach Dean Holden went to manager Lee Johnson.

“Can I have the night off and go in the away end?” he asked, half joking.

Holden, 38, a journeyman professional footballer before turning coach is a long-time United fan from Salford.'

I have now read the article in its entirety and, with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes, humour and certainly sarcasm are far from my thoughts.

I think sympathy or even humility might be the word I was looking for.'

Also @Septic Peg surprised you didn't mention that Bristol City were crucial to Old Trafford being built.

It was largely funded by the winnings Manchester United got from winning the 1909 FA Cup final against us.

Maybe @havanatopia was going to mention it.

I think Hav might mention it. We discussed a joint thread for Christmas and I covered the Club and Jose. Think Hav will discuss Manchester and past glory days ie George Best, Matt Busby etc, the FA Cup final...

Strange one this, been looking forward since the draw and can't wait for the game,  whilst I want us to win every game and the qudos of beating Man U would be great, part of me is hoping for a dignified loss where we play well, earn some plaudits but bow out without extra time. The thought of a 2 leg semi final adding to games and detracting from the real prize of promotion, worries me.

although would be nice to win!!

For me the thing is, should the impossible happen, I'd take a season in Europe (courtesy of our first ever major trophy) and then push for promotion next season over Promotion and nothing to play for next season.

However the sheer number of games being in Europe and the Championship (plus potential cup runs) would be insane.

Come On You Reds

Don't forget the best group ever to come out of Manchester in the 60's  "The Hollies" still going strong today,  even with only two original members Tony Hicks and Booby Elliott, Alan Clarke retired in the late 90's such a great lead singer.    Still on to the little matter of the game tonight,  we all want City to put one over on Man U,  but unless we play out of our socks and stop them from playing their normal game,  I can't see it happening.  The main thing is that we don't disgrace ourselves in front of a TV audience from 80 countries, a great chance to put Bristol City in the shop window for future permanent or loan signings (Man U youngsters) which perhaps an expensive favourite wine may help us with.  So come on boys, do us all proud tonight and get Bristol City's name out there for all the World to know.    COME ON YOU REDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
