Style of play...

....looking at the recent signings and who we seem to be after...anyone else see a theme developing?

Looks very much like we are going for a style very much like the start of last season, with an even pacier passing approach through the lines.

In my head...I can see Famara or Duric as a 'king pin' up front...with the likes of Odowda, Brownhill, Patto, Watkins, Adaelakun, maybe Weimann and Marriot or similar types of signings buzzing around in intricate patterns of play, rotating, playing at speed with close passing, pressing hard and breaking with speed on the counter.

Add the speed of Kelly and Bryan if we keep him...the ball playing ability of Webster from the back...and you start to see the plan developing.

I don't see our wide men playing like 'wingers'...but more like before, as wide attacking midfielders who link up with the fullbacks...

It will be interesting to see what we do in the middle of midfield....whether we go for the likes of Pack and Smith still...or go for a bigger injection of pace and even more offensive.

I wouldn't be surprised if we dropped one of the likes of Smith and Pack and played with one more offensive type player.

The other thing that struck me was the versatility of a lot of the players, who can play well in various positions.

If signings come off...Lot of movement and pace in this team...and goals ;-)

I’ve no idea about the finer points, but I know we were good at the quick passing, press game until we burnt our players out. We look like we got similar players who are able to do similar things and will rotate more. The same players might only play a hard 60 mins and then be regularly subbed when possible for example.

Could be fantastic and a joy to watch. I am concerned if we are set up so rigidly we don’t have a plan B though if we get found out?

4-3-3 and hitting the front faster.

Strangely that's the very last thing I see with who we've signed and looking at. Webster gets it on the floor and gets passing moves going. You were more likely to see that with Flint playing...

if we go in to the season with one style of play then we'll finish mid-table again,

We need to be able to mix it up, we'll need to go long on occasion we'd need to play short crisp passing football on occasion we'd need to go direct on occasion,

We're about 3 players short of being able to do that imo

Thinks it will be very intersting. The Scunny guy seems to be fast, tall and tricky. Odowda fit as Famara, Taylor, Pisano and Hegeler. Hope and think we will play good football with pace and use the flanks. Defence and midfield hopefully will develop with the new players coming in. All and all with departues and signings I think we will do fine this season. To predict is difficault but with the second half of last season in mind, think we have to play another way of football.COYR!!!

Same here. Pace and athleticism in the wide areas and a new ball playing centre back don’t make me think of a long ball team. Think we’ll very much be trying to get back to everything that worked so well pre Xmas.

Personally I’m very excited about the recruitment so far.

Style i'm not so sure about but one thing is for sure IMO, if we do not solve our vulnerability in central midfield then I expect yet a season of another long seemingly never ending losing streak at some time or another.

For me central midfield is the most important issue and I have a feeling that yet again under LJ it is something that is going to be ignored, I hope i'm wrong but I have not seen us linked with any central midfielders and I believe that to be a worry.

Ipswich fans were saying he's got a hell of a long pass on him too. Just because he's comfortable on the deck, so think he won't launch a long diagonal if it's on, and means we can get on the front foot quickly.

I've been saying that for 3 years now and still hasn't been fixed, we have no one to break up play and we have no goal scorer there ether

It's not about having a style of play rather the personnel to play to whatever style the situation demands, often dictated by who the opposition is and how they are playing.

Our problem under the past several managers has been inflexibility. Their preferred style is terrific when it works else it goes basketcase, there's little inbetween. There's also a problem with stubbornness, the reluctance to change one's oft touted style and tactics when clearly they're demonstrated not to be  working. WeeLee tends to revert to 'throw everybody upfront but still punt it at the little un' or 'overload/abandon midfield'. He's not helped by us lacking an authoritative playmaker in the middle of the park who can actively orchestrate the changes, then again it's him who constructs the squad.

Me too, the biggest problem is having no midfield organiser, how many times last season did we get caught out because Smith and Pack were both in front of the ball when we were attacking and the move broke down, there seems to be no communication and nobody saying "i'm going, drop in" and when we are on one of our losing streaks we totally run our of ideas in and around the opponents box, the new player needs to be able to unlock defences.

I have always been surprised at people believing that our central midfield is fully fit for purpose.

Yeah pretty sure we're going 4-3-3 in possession.

GK: Fielding/New Singing

RB: Pisano/Wright/New Signing

CB: Baker/Webster/Wright/Hegeler/New Signing

LB: Bryan/Kelly

Deeper CM: Pack/Smith/Hegeler

CM: Pack/Smith/Bryan/Brownhill/Walsh

Attacking CM: Brownhill/O'Dowda/Paterson/Walsh/Bryan

Wingers: O'Dowda/Watkins/Adelakun/Paterson/Weimann/Eliasson

CF: Diedhiou/Djuric/Taylor/Paterson/Weimann

Off the top of my head here's our squad depth if we play that formation or similar. I put the wingers as one because I think they'll frequently swap sides. Bryan, Eliasson and Weimann in italics because I assume Bryan and Eliasson won't be here when the season starts - Eliasson on loan. Weimann because I assume we're signing him but of course we can't be certain until it's on the OS.

Didn't bother including the likes of Bakinson, O'Leary, Holden, Edwards or Moore because I have no idea whether they'll be around the first team or not.

Assuming we do play this formation or similar - I quite like the options so far. Very interesting and exciting range of attacking players. Feel we lack one forward, someone in the style of Marriot actually - fairly quick, natural goalscorer. I suppose that player could turn out to be Taylor, but feel we need an extra man in that group. Perhaps Eisa could be the guy.

I think we could do with one more centre midfield - someone with a bit of experience and steel who puts himself about whilst dictating play. Paul Hartley of 10 years ago would be perfect actually. Ideally someone with Prem experience who can actually stay fit. Saying that, if we had the opportunity to get him - Ryan Woods would be a great choice.

Probably could do with an extra centre half really, based mostly on the injury records of Baker, Webster and Hegeler. I can see why we loaned Vyner out, but someone like him - quicker and technically sound - would be ideal. Possibly a Prem loan might do here.

We will obviously need another left back if/when Bryan goes. Would really like to see Kelly be given the opportunity to make the slot his own though. Could be very beneficial to have someone as cover there coming to the end of his career who can mentor Kelly but is happy to be backup.

Think we need another right back too - probably a first team player. Wright was fine there, but prefer to have specialist fullbacks. Would like Darikwa if possible.

I expect us to bring in another keeper regardless whether Fielding goes.

Could be an interesting few weeks - I like the early signs, but still opportunity for more strengthening.

Yep, currently  City are around 3 or 4 players short but I think we'll see that addressed fairly soon. I'm expecting at least one more incoming, hopefully two this week including a midfielder to complete with the likes of Smith, Walsh, Brownhill.

As EMB says the middle of the park is crucial and of course LJ knows that having played there himself.

Im getting mildly excited by the signings so far...........

Remember a post from Michael McIndoe at the start of this year in which he commented on our fast paced pressing game, and comparing us to Man City - in that we both play a similar style.

One of the things he said was that a major difference was that Man City could not only afford to buy the best technical players but they could also afford to buy the best players from a  fitness and stamina point of view. The pressing game takes a lot out of players and come January the combination of injuries and the relentless amount of high pressure games we played in the run up to Christmas started to take it's toll.

Perhaps it might just be that some of the players coming in have been identified has  having the physical characteristics that enable them to sustain the type of game we want to play and will give us more players who we can rotate and maintain the same style of play. Having said that I also hope that LJ is making sure we have the players to operate an effective plan B if Plan A isn't working!

A certain John Terry was a fine passer of the ball. He regularly hit pace and athleticism.

How does your GK and another play?

I wouldn't see the wide players being wingers either. More tucked in. Replace Patterson with something more athletic and it could be a team passing less and looking for transitions.

Agreed - Watkins and Adelukan are also pretty powerful players. Adelukan has the frame to really fill out and be a very powerful player. These guys aren't your stereotypical lightweight wide players.

Weimann, whilst not being as physically powerful, has a great engine - much like Reid.

Last time we had a really good def mf was a couple of years ago, he was french. Dont recall the name at the moment. When he left we were down in leauge one again. Cisse was his name. He did a very good job in the defensive, maybe not an outstanding player, but i would say, he was one of our most important player. I rate him before Smith who I think lose the ball to often. Dont get me wrong, Smith is a good player but as a def mf he is not 100 procent.

I hope that it's Eisa as well. He knows where the goal is, needs a bit of work but I'd prefer him to Marriott, especially as an investment.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head, that's why I'd like us to go for Eisa, he has those attributes to settle in very well.

I'd rather we get some one in who's already up to standard then another one for the future type player myself, it depends on where the lad wants to go and what cheltenham want for him
