The England and Wales Cricket Board are set to announce Richard Gould, an outspoken critic of the Hundred, as their new chief executive.

Gould, who is currently CEO at Championship football club Bristol City, has beaten Tim Bostock, the boss at Durham, to the job after a final round of interviews on Wednesday.

The ECB Board are understood to have met on Friday and Gould’s appointment will be confirmed in the coming days.

The appointment of Gould, a traditionalist who has spoken publicly against the Hundred, will please county fans, but there will be some ECB employees who greet it with trepidation at a time of great flux in the game both domestically and globally.

While Gould, 52, currently works in football, he has spent much of his working life in county cricket. The former tank commander was chief executive at Somerset between 2005 and 2011, then Surrey from 2011 and 2021. He left Surrey to return to Bristol City, where he had a long history; his father Bobby played for the club, and he worked there as a younger man.

Gould narrowly missed out to Tom Harrison when the ECB was last searching for a CEO in 2014.

At Surrey, he worked closely with chairman Richard Thompson, who has since become chair of the ECB, and led the search for a new CEO. The pair, but especially Gould, were staunch critics of the ECB and its new competition the Hundred during their time at Surrey. Fans of county cricket will welcome their reunion, but there will be some ECB employees who greet it with trepidation at a time of great flux in the game both domestically and globally.

Bostock, 60, was a strong candidate for the job. He is popular within the game, and has done a strong job in a difficult period at Durham. Bostock played minor counties cricket for Cheshire, and returned to the game to lead Durham after a long career in business, both in the UK and Australia.

A cynic wonders if he is grasping at  the closest fire pole and sliding down it as fast as possible as the FFP problems are coming at us and quick.

One theory is that in this area, he has done all he can and has made key improvements, but the EFL aren't budging on some points that might be necessary for us.

Fortunately I'm no cynic but some may wonder.

When I honestly thought we would have stability!! But something told me he wouldn't stay around long if something cricket came along,BUT now the question is who replaces him? Which now begs the question will Pearson like the new man? What is going on with this club.

Nothing is going on. These things happen. We have to deal with it.

This would have nothing to do with FFP Pops.
It’s simply an opportunity to work as the top man in his favoured sport.
England cricket or Bristol City. It’s not a tough choice to be fair.
