Swansea City at home in the FA Cup match thread

Recommended Posts

Sunday January 8th at 12:30pm we kick off our Emirates FA Cup campaign at home to Swansea City.

Travel info: https://www.bcfc.co.uk/news/ℹ-important-travel-information-swansea-city-h/

They have sold all their allocated tickets so 2,650 members of the Jack Army will be at Ashton Gate.

NP presser:

George Tanner pre- match:

As well as Swansea which other EFL league teams have a water connection in their name? My list appears at the end of this post, I suspect there are some more!

The last time we met the Swans in the FA Cup was back in 1996 when we progressed after a first round replay.

In December they fought back from 3-0 down to claim a point in a remarkable game at Coventry City. The stats from their recent league game away at Reading are staggering, Swansea City had 76% of possession, 12 shots (7 on target) and 4 corners (all more than their opponents) yet they lost 2-1. Then on 30 December they ended their eight-game winless streak in style with a 4-0 thrashing of Watford. On Monday they lost 1-2 at home to Burnley.

Swansea are very much possession-based and they can be very hard to play against as they rotate players all the time.

Our record over the years against them is won 29, lost 23 and drawn 22.

Their well known fans include David Hasselhoff, Elis James, Rob Brydon,  Steffan Rhodri and Catherine Zeta Jones.

The following have played for both us and them Lee Trundle, Tammy Abraham, Jamie Paterson, Korey Smith and Ashley Williams. Although JP may not be there much longer: https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/bristol-city-swansea-fa-cup-7997105

Craig Pawson will be the man in charge. The 43-year-old has been working in the Football League since the 2008-09 season and was promoted to the Select Group – officials working predominantly in the top-flight – in 2013.

Two years later he became the seventh English referee to be included on the FIFA International Referee List and he began the current season by taking charge of a Champions League match between Pyunik Yerevan and F91 Dudelange.

His first domestic match this campaign was the Community Shield fixture between Liverpool and Manchester City.

In total, he has taken charge of 18 matches this season, mostly in the Premier League. He is yet to send anyone off this term but has handed out 80 yellow cards. This will be his first Bristol City game since November 2019 when he oversaw a 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest.

Pawson will be assisted by Constantine Hatzidakis and Daniel Robathan. Keith Stroud will be the fourth official.

There are two theories behind the club's famous nickname: the reputation of local seamen known as 'Jack tars' in the early 19th century and a black retriever dog called Swansea Jack who rescued 27 people from drowning in the Tawe and docks during the 1930s.

The Swans have never made the FA Cup final but they have reached the semis twice: in 1926 against Bolton, and in 1964 against Preston.

Although we’ve never won the FA Cup in 1909 we won through to our only FA Cup Final, though we were somewhat fortunate that a last-gasp spot-kick saved us from defeat in the semi-final versus Derby County at Stamford Bridge. In the final at the Crystal Palace (now the National Sports Centre) we lost to Manchester United 1–0, in front of 71,401 fans. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1909_FA_Cup_Final

There might be a reaction to the shirt we wore in the final (see photo)

Our starting lineup was:

Harry Clay

Archie Annan

Joe Cottle

Pat Hanlin

Billy Wedlock

Arthur Spear

Fred Staniforth

Bob Hardy

Sam Gilligan

Andy Burton

Frank Hilton

Manager: Harry Thickett

However, there have been some great games over the years: https://www.bcfc.co.uk/news/ten-of-the-best-fa-cup-clashes-down-the-years/

My personal favorite was the 1974 away game at Elland Road, our squad: https://www.11v11.com/teams/bristol-city/tab/players/season/1974/

I was a very naïve teenager back then, when we scored I went totally berserk, nobody within 30 yards of me moved. Thankfully, I lived to tell the tale! https://youtu.be/6Th1peqmkH

Closely followed by our fifth round game away to Spurs in March 1967 (I was ten) we lost 2-0,  Jimmy Greaves got both their goals (the second a last minute penalty) and we missed a twice taken penalty.  Our squad: https://www.11v11.com/teams/bristol-city/tab/players/season/1967/

My dad let me paint my rattle, especially for the biggest game I had been to, the attendance was 54,610, and as the City team took to the pitch I gave my rattle full throttle….it was at that moment that everyone around me discovered the red paint wasn’t perfectly dry as flecks of bright red paint flew around White Hart Lane ?. Spurs went on the beat Chelsea in the final. As it happens I’m in North London this Saturday for the Spurs v Pompey match.

Back to the opening question….

Blackpool

Bournemouth

Bradford

Brentford

Chelsea

Crystal Palace (at a push)

Exeter

This has 1-1 draw and replay written all over it….. Wait, are there replays anymore ? I seem to remember us going out to Fulham in added time last year ?

There are for the third and fourth rounds (I think!) but not the rest

Yeh replays were scrapped for the 3rd round and on during the "COVID seasons". But they're back this season for 3rd and 4th round. 5th round, QFs, SFs and final will be ET and pens straight away.

No not on robins TV, but scheduled for international broadcast. There must be streams out there? Anybody have any?

It’s on Paramount Plus here in Australia.. I had to sign up for a 7 day free trial, but it’s good, every single tie available to watch. Even got to watch the highlights of the sags losing to Boreham Wood ?

At a push I know, but it would be rude not to include Boreham to JB’s list ?

I've got my ticket, owing to my games being called off. If today's rain is anything to go by, this game could either be an FA cup classic or a real war of attrition.

Whenever we get strong wind and heavy rain like this I'm reminded of a real stinker of a game against (?) Wolves in the GJ era? IIRC Wolves scored a goal by pumping a ball into the box that the wind took over Basso and into the net.

Either that, or I've had one too many seasonal ales over the festive period...

Thanks for the linkJerseybean. It looks like our performances haven't changed over the years - we seem to have drawn virtually every match at home and then won the replays away. Apart from the final

So what's our Nige going to do with this cup game. Select a team that should win as you do and then lose or pick your best 11 and go for a much needed morale boosting win for players and fans alike plus not forgetting the possibility of drawing a top club in the next round and bringing in some much needed dosh.

I remember that game. Loved that one.

We came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2. Dele Adebola! It was like a monsoon that night.

Remember the Chelsea game in poor conditions, one of my favourite city games. Brilliant

"It's that man DELE ADEBOLA AGAIN!" - surely one of the most used cliche commentary lines in Sky Sports history

Glad someone else remembers this barmy game. Crazy swirling wind, IIRC somehow we had the wind against us for most of the game - even when we changed ends at HT!

Excellent as always by JB but chapter 435 of War & Peace is circa 50,000 words shorter.
