A Phenomenal Away Record

Silvio Dante

Recommended Posts

Today was the last away game I’ve planned to attend this season. My record in the five games attended has been…

Watford - lost 2-0

Cardiff - lost 2-0

Birmingham - lost 3-0

Luton - lost 1-0

Reading - lost 2-0

So, played 5, lost 5, no goals scored, 10 conceded.

Anyone have a worse record in their time watching City?

Well, while my list of away days with city is pretty small, In over 30 years going down the Gate, unfortunately I can honestly say, I have never seen City win away.

I've been to: (some more than once)

Aston Villa

Exeter

Stoke

Gillingham

West Brom

Watford

Reading

Sheffield Wednesday

 And Wembley

In all of that lot the best I've seen is a 1-1 draw with Exeter in the Pizza Trophy area final second leg.

I did however, once see our reserves absolutely demolish Plymouth Argyle in a mid week reserve match at Home Park sometime in the late 90's.

Jesus. To be fair, this is the first season I’ve drawn a blob on the away games - it doesn’t help I also planned for Swansea until it was moved to a Sunday! - but I doff my cap at that record.

Whats worse is that my son and daughter were taken to the Coventry game at Burton by @Steve Watts - where I didn’t attend - and they saw a 4-1 win to go with the defeats I’ve subjected them to (except Luton. They missed that but in some weird way wanted to be there!)

Opportunity for some bragging, I get away very rarely but my only 4 are:

Nottingham Forest - 0-0. Tomlin missed a penalty for them which was a sweetener.

Sheffield United - 3-2 win, Weimann’s first ever career hattrick.

Derby County - 3-1 win. Weimann got his 20th of the season.

Stoke a week ago. Late Mehmeti winner.

Fingers crossed for a good one next season too??⚪

I remember the first season after we got relegated from the top flight in 80/81.

I saw every away game (home too) & am pretty sure our first win away that season was in the last one, at Cardiff.

I was only 17 at the time but think I must have been absolutely mad to keep going to away games.

Mind you 2 years later I was going to Halifax midweek & to Hartlepool & Darlington, FFS.

Dear lord! This is why anyone on here reserves the right to be critical of the team/ manager/ players/ board of bristol city,,, anyone who is still here after decades of watching us balls it up has earned the right to be fed up with it all!

My son’s away record is spectacular. His first away game was Brighton when we won 1-0 in their promotion season, Brownhill scoring the winner.

Since then, he’s been to 8 more and lost the lot. Four of those were this season and he’s not seen a goal in any of them. But compared to @TomF’s record he’s got a long way to go ?

I’ve been to most of them with him and we are considering QPR on the last day. We might give it a swerve though, just so we might actually get the win…

I only get to 5 or 6 games a season, but I think the last win I saw was 2-1 away at Derby. I’ve not seen us score even a point this season. I was there for 2-5 Doncaster (home), 0-6 Cardiff (home), and 1-7 Swansea (away) though, so I’ve seen some stinkers over the years.

edit; and 1-4 Reading (away)where we looked unbeatable for the first 20 mins then rolled over

Other side of the coin; I saw City lose at home to Villa in 1980. Then serving abroad and then moving away from Bristol, it was 1992, 12 years, before I saw another home defeat.

I think I went to every away game we lost in the 88/89 season. Had a thoroughly miserable time for the most part, but I was at Bradford for the 1-0 League Cup quarter final win which made up for a lot of it, although I didn't really see the goal as it happened in the first minute and most of us were still filtering into the terrace (it was packed!). Was also at Forest the 1-1 draw in the semis.

As I mentioned in another thread, I saw John Atyeo score 4 goals in an away win at Shrewsbury. It’s been downhill all the way since then

Downhill? My first away game was against the Arsenal in 1976! ?
