Massengo Contract

HNM signing a new contract with us is never gonna happen! If you were Andi Weimann or Nahki Wells (having previously agreed significantly reduced terms) and you saw HNM signing a new deal equal to or in excess of his old deal there would be absolute uproar in the dressing room! 

Any risk of undermining the good will Big Nige has built up within the squad just won't happen.

I expect the starting point was very different. Weimann & Wells were near the top of our budget and towards the end of their respective careers. Massengo would have been lower/middle budget and best years ahead of him.

I would guess a contract equal to what he was on is still some way lower than the new ones AW & NW are on.

Possibly, but the system is set up so individuals (or their agents) have to fight their own battles . 
They will have agreed to a new deal to extend their stays, so no upheaval or costs, set against a reduced contract and still earn a very good salary. It is very different to HNM's position and they (or us) wouldn't know how much the offer was until he accepts .
Even then can they argue with someone who has 10/15 years ahead of them Vs an extra year or two at the end of a contract.
I honestly don't think it would make a difference to the squad dynamic.

He's been absent for a fair while now anyway, in which time I'm sure the dynamic of the squad has moved on, as has he.

Just annoying he's exactly the sort of player we will be looking for. Add that Nige knows him and thinks he's a good player, but his time has past IMO.
Having said that, if things were to change and he didn't get the offers he (and we) expect him to. As I said, he's exactly the sort of player we would would be looking for.

There’s no danger of him signing any contract which we could feasibly offer him.  It appears that he has wanted to move on for a long time (waving goodbye at the end of the 21/22 season etc. and based on what Nigel has said).

It’s not about what is being offered and we have maintained the contract offer to solely ensure we are entitled to compensation with no expectation that it would be accepted.

It's a shame really, because with Scott leaving for a Prem club, and a bit more experience for HNM, there is a space in that midfield. I do wonder if he has been misadvised at some point, he was making decent appearances before his reluctance to sign a new deal and shop around. I don't blame Pearson for leaving him out. He has turned Scott into a £25 million player, and it's unfortunate that similar has not happened to Han. Could he look back on the past 18 months and think he should have forced a move last summer or re-signed and kept playing?

We don't know what Han's reasons are. It might be football reasons or something to do with family issues. Or just home sickness.

I agree that Nigel could have made him a player but sadly that ship has sailed.

At 18, I moved to a different country on my own. It was a huge culture shock and I suffered badly with homesickness. Some people take to it and adapt better than others, regardless of what you’re there for and how much you’re getting paid. 
Alex Scott moving from Guernsey, while undoubtedly a challenge, is not the same as HNM moving from France.

We have to offer a contract of at least the same value as his current deal or we aren't entitled to compensation I believe

You're absolutely right a totally different challenge alex would not have been in a position wages wise to bring family member's over to live with him like han or yourself at 18, may i ask if you moved abroad at 18 for work?

Not sure if anyone saw but on French tv after Sunday’s match v PSG Han-Noah was interviewed pitch side by the tv presenter and Thierry Henry.

He and Thierry know each other from Monaco of course and they greeted each other with a hug and smile. Thierry gave him advice on playing against people like Mbappé, Han said he was very confident of getting the points they need to stay up.

Bristol City were mentioned but Thierry soon shut that conversation down saying Han wouldn’t be thinking about Bristol at all, just on the job in hand at Auxerre.

Han and Thierry speak on the phone about once a month, he’s still very much Han’s mentor

Yes, I moved for work. I may be wrong but I’m sure Han’s father also acts as his agent? Which would mean he’s also earning a few quid, whereas I don’t think Alex Scott’s father does.

I was in the army at 17 and posted to Germany. Like lots of guys my age I struggled at first but had an epiphany when I tried to chat up a girl I fancied in the cookhouse and she told me via someone who could interpret that if I learned German she would date me. I quickly realised loneliness and not being able to communicate went hand in hand. So I learned German and everything changed. I was no longer stuck with the insular band of guys I worked with. Things opened up and I ended up living there for  a while after I left the army. This was in the '80s.
Alex Scott had an advantage in as much as he didn't have a language issue. HNM learned to speak reasonable English and from what I understand was popular with his team mates. Someone I know who met him formed the impression that 'team Massengo' always had a plan long term, and that we weren't part of it unless we got promoted. He came for the experience. If we went up then fine, a win win for everyone. If at the end of the contract we weren't competitive he'd move on.
The internet and technology make the world a much smaller place these days and staying in touch is far easier than it used to be.
I personally think he's been getting the wrong advice from his father. His head was probably turned about something which hasn't happened. Shame because in full flow he was a good player.

From what you are saying, sounds like his team had far too much vision of the future potential of Han that they lost track of how his current development would pan out!

Unfortunately at the time, for me socialising wasn’t really possible. The group I was with was 90% French with a few Africans. I was the only British guy and the French had no interest in building relationships or even attempting to communicate with me, despite speaking to each other in English(which was quite funny to be fair). The African lads were great though, i was put in a hotel with one of them and the others made me feel welcome. 
I was just woefully underprepared mentally and probably didn’t try to embrace the culture as much as I should have. 
I agree, the internet would have made a huge difference.
