poland_red
Fair comment that is how I feel alive, I did try watching X factor and even sat through a tennis match a Wimbledon...sadly it did not even come close. I also served in Belfast with the British Army, that WAS scary, but I was a younger man then... kindly stop patronizing me. The 'lesson' I have learnt is that violence is inherent in mankind, you will never change it and some young men embrace it. I am not talking about smashing up pubs, frightening children or throwing missiles at police...just that a punch up on a Saturday afternoon between consenting people is hardly WW3. there be the magic word - consent. personally, scrapping at football isn't my thing, but if consenting adults want to, then why the hell stop them. it's outrageous to see people getting bigger sentences for football related offences than these mongs who set the country on fire last summer, or weirdos who fiddle with kids, nutters who kill people on the roads because they've gone out and got tanked up - the list could go on. I think I was reading Burnley's lad got five years a cpl of years back for a row with blackburn that he wasn't even at!!!! mystifying... crazy... endlessly entertained at how sanctimonious some people are on this forum. as for phantom - would love to take you up on that, alas, rugby is a sport I have despised since my school days and to this day, it sends a chill down my spine
slartibartfast
Not true, in fact a T20 crowd is often compared to that of a football crowd, purely because people drink lots and make lots of noise. Perhaps you should venture down to Taunton next summer for an education on this - I'll buy you a pint UGH... I can't think of a worse combo...T20 AND Taunton ! chipdawg
Last one for sometime as I do not communuicate with my Mrs this much. Once Glastonbury was smaller, cheaper and attended by people who were much more rebellious. The entire festival scene is a shadow of its self, alternative most of it is now not.A form of social engineering was almost applied. Former independent festivals are now anything but. The criminal justice act targetted anarchists. eco warriors, festivals, football fans, travellers, ravers, trade unionists, squatters and many more who hardly fitted in with political leaders view of the world. Rugby league is a minority sport, I do not know much about to be honest. What I can observe is that many laws affecting the mentioned are applied not because of safety and lots of danger, but because people do not like their lifestyles whether that be a toke, driving big bedford trucks around with dreadlocks in the summer, fag stood up in football stadium or listening to music with 150 bpm in a public field. Football culture is being smothered with political correctness, stifling H&S and commercialisation - TV. Well perhaps we can pick this up when you've had a chat with the wife then? I take all your points on Glastonbury and the criminal justice act; I would have loved to have been old enough to go to Glastonbury before the fences and before the £200 per ticket but health and safety and council jobsworths are not the only reason it's changed. The modern point of Glastonbury is to raise money for charity- £2million plus last time it was on and that can't be achieved without a level of commercialisation I know they're linked by legislation, but I personally think a bunch of guys in a field smoking weed and having a good time is a million miles from a bunch of guys in a built up area knocking the shit out of each other because they support different football clubs
CodeRed
I’m the same age as the OP and I do understand what he is saying. The formation of the City mob (in the 60's) started the culture of singing and terrace fashion at AG. First and formost those lads were City fans , they went for the football, but they wanted to stand & sing together behind the goal and support the club in a different way to their parents. Being young men it did get overheated sometimes in an era before segregation. To give an analogy – I was a Mod in those days, I rode a scooter, wore the gear etc. It didn’t mean I spent every spare moment fighting with “Rockers” on Brighton beach in fact I never once had any “aggro” with any rockers but nowadays all younger people assume – having watched the old newsreels – that it was all about the fighting. It wasn’t- it was just the fashion of the day. The same with the early terrace “mobs”( as they were called). I certainly don’t recognise and didn’t witness any injuries, “maiming” of “innocent” bystanders, or “mindless thuggery” or any other DailyMail type of cliché spouted off by people who weren’t there. Nogbad the Bad
The famous scraps in the park in the 70's were mostly just hundreds of youngsters running around amongst a few police horses. I even saw 10-12 year olds charging about. Looking back the average age of football hooligans in the mid 70's must have been very young - I saw some footage recently of a famous battle on the pitch between Spurs and Chelsea. Papers were full of outrage at the time but looking at it now in fact it was just a few dozen 16-20 year olds, dressed and looking like the Bay City Rollers, aiming punches and kicks at each other, with hardly any connecting, trying to make the other side retreat. City fans used to be up in court for fighting after most home games in the old first division days, and the majority were aged under 20.

I like a joke and a laugh as much as the next person, but where do people like yourself get off trying to emasculate blokes just because they don't agree with kicking the shit out of someone for no apparent reason other than they support a different football team? 22A
Very good post. Modern football is so sanitised and far to money/family orientated. Years ago the adverts at half time of a televised game were for beer, cigarettes and fast cars. These days, they are for investment plans, toys and tampons. OUR game's been stolen and reinvented. Just remember on Satdee to sit in neat rows and just applaud politely at the final whistle, then buy plenty of merchandise at the superstore before returning home. It's no longer atmosphere but a "match day experience".

To be honest i can't remember why I signed up, it was such a long time ago now...I was probably drunk as well. Most of my frustrations are around how sterile football has become these days, I am glad that in the NPC and lower leagues there is some aggro and passion still about to be honest. I predict that by 2025 football will sadly cease to exist, it will be replaced by the Global Soccer League sponsored by Budweiser and supported largely by Chinese and Malaysians. Matches will be played at 3am in the morning with a robot for a ref and virtual crowds. I am happy that I experienced football in it's most base form, but I know that it is not everyone's cuppa, especially the Sky Sports generation. Rumble young man RUMBLE! snarf
You say you hate fighting, but you love to watch Boxing, Judo, Taekwondo at the Olympics. You say you hate violence, but you're OK with violent movies and video games. Even let your kids watch/play for hours on end. You're happy to buy Adidas replica shirts, made in factories that threaten teenage girls with rape to keep productivity levels up. So why do you complain about consenting adults meeting up in a free country to have a fight, seeing as you approve of sexual violence against children??? You are nothing but brain dead, ill educated, HYPOCRITES.

Well i don't agree 100% with all of that, but it did make me laugh. Robot refs, you could be onto something there! I started watching footie in the 80s. Probably my first memorable trip to AG would of been about '84, something like that. It's changed for sure, and not all for better without a doubt. Soft players, over paid prima donas, play acting, diving, sky sports etc all make the game worse IMO but i can't see how fighting on the terraces would make things any better or a trip to a match more enjoyable. It's no longer atmosphere but a "match day experience". I always feel the overwhelming number of adverts during football now are for betting websites. The ability to bet on the number of throw in's between the 16th and 25th minute is another scourge upon the game Anyway, advertising during a football match is stupidly expensive so if they advertise tampons it's because there are lots of people with an interest in tampons watching. That's not the sanitisation of football it's just that someones probably done some proper Market research I'm sure that if you went back 40 years there'd be older gentlemen sat in pubs arguing with the generation below them about how football isn't what it used to be and how it's become sanitised... THe IPL (apparantly) is dying on its arse. The crowds are down here too. I think the majority of real cricket fans have seen through the "Kings new clothes". I saw a bit of the 40/40 final (whatever it's called) and if there was 10k at lords I would be surprised. In the old days of fifty/firty-five overs finals (a proper day out) Lords would be packed.
