To see him in his glory days was a real privilege.  I feel particularly fortunate

In his case it is true to say we will never see his like again.  My grandfather who saw almost all his home games and also saw Wedlock play said Big John was the greater footballer of the two.

Gentleman John, those who saw you play will never cease to miss you.  Ashton Gate has never seemed the same to many of us since you stopped playing.

How amazing, to have had conversations with a grandfather who could compare Wedlock and Ayteo from first hand experience of having seen them play. Understandably, there is so little said about the City team that reached the Cup final and were second in the top flight over 100 years ago. I wonder how many old timers on here have memories of grandparents talking about those teams? Would be great to hear some accounts of Bristol City pre WW1.

  2. A distant relative of mine, played in the Western League and was approached by an Arsenal scout after a match in the 1970s. He had a baby face and a mop of long blonde hair. The scout wanted him to come up to Highbury for a trial. However, my relative was too honest when asked his age, as soon as he said 36, the scout lost interest. ?

I watched the game. Prefer Rangers out of the 2, but they were absolutely woeful last night. I think City would have beaten them.

Celtic look like they have signed quite a few up and coming players from Japan and are hungry to get the title back off Rangers. I think Rangers losing Gerrard was a huge loss for them.

Although that was the first defeat under Gio Van Bronkhurst. I watch lots of SPFL games and that is the best Celtic have been and the worst Rangers have been. I predict Celtic to win the league, but it will be close 3 or 4 points.

I guess it takes a certain type of person to earn those numbers from scratch with certain traits as you mention elsewhere.  As my dad used to say the rich ‘don’t get rich writing cheques’!

As a student I delivered Chinese food, the shop was on the edge of the largest council estate in the UK (in Staffordshire) and the other side was a very middle class area. The tips I received were much better from the council estate. In fact most of the plush houses didn't tip at all. Backs up your dad's point.

They really don't have decent support these days they're lucky to get 4,000 a week. Very much a club in free fall

I'd consider 4000 when you are bottom of the entire league a decent turn out. If they were challenging at the top of the National League next season they'd average 5000, which would make them in the top 4 or 5 best supported teams at that level.

Live very local to Scunthorpe and all their fans I speak to don’t think they will come back up when they go down

Fans always react OTT when their team are going through a tough spell (as regularly demonstrated on here!). Scunny have a decent support and ground, no reason why they can't bounce back in 2 or 3 seasons time. Although it won't be easy of course, just ask Luton.

My first visit to Kenilworth Road was on Saturday 3 October 1970 to see City lose 3-0 in a Division Two clash to two first half goals from Malcolm Macdonald and a third from Alan Slough. Travelled up on the supporters club coach and stood behind the goal at the back of the home end!

Today, I searched a useful site https://www.hattersheritage.co.uk/luton-town-vs-bristol-city-19701971 and came across the match report and a photo of the match programme. There are other photos of the match available on the site. At the time, Luton were pushing for promotion under Alec Stock whilst we were in a relegation fight - they eventually finished 6th while we scraped to safety in 19th above Charlton, Blackburn and Bolton. Earlier in the season, we'd won the home fixture 3-2, going behind in the first half to goals from Macdonald and Viv Busby before a second half Chris Garland inspired fightback. He scored two and set up another for Dickie Rooks.

Thought it may be of interest to some of my fellow old farts.

Programme: Luton Town vs Bristol City 1970/1971

We got revenge on Malcom Macdonald in 1976, his debut for Arsenal and City win their first top flight match for decades 0-1.

Is it just me who remembers them snapping up the old Eastend seats when they lost a game against us? I have a clear image in my head of a dozen angry Cardiff fans at the front lobbing the seats onto the side of the pitch in and around 2002

I don't remember that, but I do remember them lifting the big red iron gates off their hinges after a City v Cardiff game in the mid to late 80s. The gates were locked to allow the away fans to be kept in but Cardiff weren't having it. Next the thing the gates are removed and it's carnage ?

Shoutout to the fella in the away end with a Gas flag.

“Yeah, you know what I’ll take a Bristol Rovers flag in and show them”

    Tadaaaa??

If a Rovers fan, why turn up at Ashton when your team are involved in their big local derby at Swindle.

If a Cardiff fan, why fly a Rovers flag, they hate you nearly as much as us. I cannot imagine City supporters flying a Swansea flag.

Blimey I had no idea he was up there. Is there anywhere further possible? Fair play to him at such a young age. Could be just what he needs.

I hope he packed his gloves!
