Agreed. I suspect the real answer is that MA and LJ were jointly responsible for dumping the kittens in the canal.

I think LJ was teaching the kittens to swim because he suspected that at some stage MA would throw them in the canal.

Fair play to you, was that in a professional capacity? I remember seeing games where the opposition were really struggling with the surface speed and bounce. Ok if you're used to playing on hard surfaces but the likes of Dave Rodgers had no chance.

Very far from professional, Rich.  My youth team hired it for a charity game.  Think that was the problem.  Any Tom, Dick and Harry could rent it and play on it.  Took a real battering.

Totally agreed. My thoughts are with him just now as someone who is about to start cancer treatment.

As a keeper Andy was relatively short 5. 10, I believe, which is remarkable compared to some of the giants that keep goal now.

Hope it goes well for you.

There's a very useful book I read called Anti-Cancer which helped me a few years back.  I didn't have a cancer but I have an autoimmune condition that was life threatening at the time.  The book is all about mobilising your own immune system to fight illness (not just cancer) so was very helpful for me.  Felt like I got a bit of control back which was very empowering.

    I thoroughly recommend it.

This tends to happen quite a bit with teams in and around London, no matter how small they are. There is an excess of top class footballers looking for a team and pay packet, without having to move home. Stands to reason that the smaller clubs in and around London pick up those excess players and actually perform above what would be their their natural status, based on attendances and local population. Given Luton and also QPR both had an unfair advantage by allowing a plastic pitch, which most probably assisted them in being more successful than they would otherwise have been, during the 70's and 80's, their most recent successful period, since which time they've spent in the 3rd 4th and 5th tiers of English football.

Purely hypothetical I know but, if we were that bit closer to the capital, I'm pretty confident we'd have surpassed the likes of Fulham, Palace, QPR, let alone those on the periphery like Watford and Reading.

There is however one success Luton have had over us, which I don't think we could ever come near. That is, the most goals scored against one team in a football league match. Stand up and take a bow MR Joe Payne, for scoring 10 goals against Bristol Rovers in 1936. Luton Town and Joe Payne I salute you.

I played on the plastic pitch at Kenilworth Road when they were still in the First Division.  It was awful.   Massive bounce and totally unpredictable as it had massive tears and divots in it everywhere.  Terrible skin rash if you ever attempted a slide tackle.  Made worse by the sand they spread on it in an effort to deaden the bounce.   Once was enough.

Imo he doesn't need to. Make over a million in a year. Some outfit will turn up after that and still offer him a decent wage. Some teams see a CV. Chelsea and 4 Championship teams and will go for it.

At a push, unless right contract comes along, I can see him staying or loan deal with percentage wages paid.

Maybe so, but I see 'failed' at 4 championship clubs.  He could become a vanity project by some manager that feels he can get a tune out of him though.   Undoubtedly talented, but for me it's his attitude and hunger that's at question.  Taking a pay cut to play - and he will still have a comfortable life - would be a good way to answer that question for me.

  6. Palmer needs to play games to have a chance of making a career in the game.   If he stays with us and doesn't play he becomes an even less attractive player for possible suitors.   He may be out of the game in two or  years if he doesn't make a sensible decision and move on this summer.  That may mean sacrificing wages now to make sure he earns decent money for the next 7 or 8 years.  It'll be best for him and the club.

  7. Well done to Jake for choosing to live his life the way he wants to.

Yes, it shouldn't be a big deal in 2022, but it is in the world of professional sport.  Very brave and I hope it makes it easier for others to do the same.

I went to Birthmarked last night at the Old Vic.   The story of a young man who's decision to be himself came at huge cost to himself and his family because of the community in which he was raised.   Very moving and positive.  Unfortunately, the circumstances in which some people find themselves still makes these decisions unbearably difficult.   Live a lie and suffer mentally with this, or be yourself and become ostracised.  It is still a big deal to many.

To anyone that would like to understand a little more about the dilemma some still face, I thoroughly recommend it.

It wasn’t just about his ability as a goalkeeper though Rob.

He was inspirational. He was a leader. It was what he did for other players, for the team, in the dressing room as much as what he did between the sticks.

How many threads have we seen on here the past decade bemoaning our lack of leadership?

    Absolutely, spot @italian dave.

It felt like a religious experience watching city with Basso in goal.   That 'always believe' chant inspired by Basso seemed to really the team on to score countless goals at the end of games.  A stark contrast to what be have the last few years.

    Updated version

Points dropped / gained due to goals (in the last five minutes + additional time of games) this season

Home to Blackpool - 2 points they equalized in the 93 minute

Home to Luton - 2 points they equalized in the 91 minute

Away to QPR + 2 points we scored in the 93 minute

Home to Forest - 3 points they scored in the 91 and 92 minutes

Away to Coventry - 1 point they scored in the 92 minute

Away to Hull + 1 point we equalized in the 91 minute

Home to QPR - 1 point they scored in the 93 minute

Home to Millwall +2 points we scored in the 85 minute

Home to Coventry - 1 point they scored in the 89 minute

Away to Blackburn + 2 points we scored in the 92 minute

Home to WBA - 0 points (both teams scored beyond 85 minutes)

10 points lost, 7 points gained, overall 3 points lost

Thanks for the updated version, but I don't count WBA as a neutral result.   Having a last-minute victory snatched away like that is crushing.  No way can it be neutral.

I think I'm being stupid, but why do we only drop 1 when 'they' score? Shouldn't it be -2 (if they equalise) or -3 (if they win)?

Because we're we heading for a draw before they scored.  Didn't lost instead so we miss out on a point.

I think based on what he has said,  RG does get involved in the financial and contractual aspect of recruitment, but not player identification. As it stands it looks like it is Sean Gillespy (head of technical recruitment) with Pearson with no head of recruitment in the sense discussed.

Yes, I wasn't clear.  I would expect this to be part of his remit but not player identification or decisions on what players to sell and when.

Still feel DoF needs to own the vision of what vision we have for the club and the footballing philosophy we recruit to.   Head of Recruitment - should be ever get one - will need this strategic view to follow.

  13. When Richard Gould was appointed CEO it was clear he would not be involved in player recruitment so my hope was that we would appoint someone competent pronto.   The fact that we have not is extremely concerning especially if we can believe what these agents are telling you.  For such a successful businessman it's astonishing that SL has not addressed this issue.

  14. Dean will always have my utmost respect for the way he talks about his loss and how he manages to cope.  There was a lot of Mickey taking about him being a good human (largely of MA tbf), but he really is an inspirational man in terms of being open and able to articulate his emotions.

It's a shame things didn't work out, but I for one would welcome him back at the club in some capacity later in his career.
