Having listened to Manning’s interviews, are you still devoid of optimism, feeling just a bit excited, maybe a little intrigued?

I thought he’s come across well, showed good insight across multiple dynamics, yet without LJ’s bull and smugness.

Of course, proof of pudding will be on the pitch. Still a massive gamble of course, but might work.

Not totally devoid of optimism but not excited and definitely not particularly intrigued.

I think he did well in that it's been a bit of a whirlwind time of it. I thought the intro to the players in the meeting room was really awkward. Totally agree on the LJ bit. I really couldn't stomach anymore of listening to that.

Of course the proof will be what happens on the grass. He intimated that he won't have time to make too many changes and implement his style in the short lead up to the QPR game. So, I'd imagine we will see a similar shape as we would have under NP.

If you listen to most coaches, they say the same sort of stuff and can't think of anything that he said that made me think he is different in any way. At least he didn't try and bullshit with too much technical jargon. He did say about pressing and going over the top of the press. It stuck in my mind a bit and if and when I get time, I will try and find it and quote what he said.

    Right for what it's worth.

The decision to get rid of Pearson, the timing and the way they did it was wrong.

    Got nothing against Manning.

If he delivers, he'll be our hero (and worshipped). If he doesn't, he'll, quite rightly, get pelters from the fans (and the boot).

Good luck to him, for all our sakes.

But there ain't no honeymoon period.

Careful Joe. You have made your feelings known over the last week a few time now. By doing so again, you may end up upsetting some on here.

They have to be, given the circumstances. Not a reflection on him, I wish him every success, and would like nothing more than to see City in the Premier League.

I think you are getting the words mixed up.

You said, 'high expectations' where it is more like hope than expectations.

As an Oxford fan, I hope he gets you relegated and he ends up sacked.
Manning has shown he’s got no loyalty. He was doing nothing prior to his appointment, the Oxford board took him on and backed him to the hilt in the close season, now he’s shown that a sniff at the Championship and he’s off, leaving Oxford in the shit.  13 games where he managed to keep us up, just, then got us to 2nd in League One in what is a poor division.

If he’d left at the end of the season, fair enough, but to do it a third of the way through is galling.

    Hope QPR beat you Saturday.

    regards

    Yea but apart from that.......

Better than a lot of the candidates

I wouldn't swap Pearson/Rennie/Euell/Fleming for Manning/Hogg but good luck to them

Pressures on the Lansdown's I would say rather than those two

Do you really think the Lansdown's give a Rat's arse about the pressures of getting it wrong. Again?

    People saying its underwhelming??

    Personally I'm relieved.

Relieved we didnt get a big name like Lampard who is living off his playing career.

Doesn't really matter now does it. We've been around the houses since NP was binned. Now we've got this bloke that our media team couldn't even get his name right.

Liam Manning appointed Bristol City Head Coach
    07 November 2023

Bristol City have appointed Liam Manning as Head Coach on a three-and-half-year contract until June 2027.

Manning joins from Oxford United along with Chris Hogg, who will become Assistant Head Coach.

Bristol City Chairman Jon Lansdown said: “Liam is a great fit for the club and the style of play we want. He has a very detailed approach to coaching, improving players and getting the best out of them as his record at MK Dons and Oxford United shows, while he has valuable experience within the (Manchester) City Group and in Belgium.

“As soon as we made the change Liam was our first choice and we are grateful to Oxford United for the extremely professional way they have approached the departure of someone who was doing a fantastic job for them.

“We are excited about the arrival of Liam and Chris and fulfilling the ambition we all have for the club with this talented and committed group of players.”

Manning said: “This is a terrific opportunity and one that I’m really looking forward to. If you look at the vision of the club and where they want to get to and how they want to get there I think there is really good fit and alignment with my journey and where I want to get to.

“We are custodians and you have to respect and understand the past and the culture of the area that you’ve moved and leave the club in a better state than we found it.

“We’ll be doing our upmost in terms of the day to day in putting really strong processes in place, getting emotionally invested in what we do and having that passion, that drive, that hunger to improve everything.”

Manning is excited about working with the group of players he met for the first time today, saying: “You want players that you can coach and are mouldable and on an upward trajectory in their career. I think that brings certain behaviours in terms of drive, intensity and ambition which align with how we want to work.”

F@ck me I could have pretty much written that 8 days ago and just inserted the names today. Soooo predictable.

The clue was they (some of the new users) signed up initially with their real names and / or email addresses that linked them back to Bristol Sport.  How effing dumb is that?

Hence why you’re seeing stuff about BS employees joining.

Very dumb but not surprising if they are linked to Bristol Sport.

As others have alluded, the negativity is more due to Pearson’s dismissal.

Personally, I’m not as bothered as others about Pearson leaving and am actually quite enthused at Manning’s appointment.
As I said earlier, I watched the MK team a number of times under his tenure and I really enjoyed the way they played.
Similarly, I saw Oxford a couple of times last year (before he arrived) and they were dog-awful and I thought they’d go down, but since his arrival he’s turned around the results but also the performances.

I’m probably in a minority on here but I’m actually happy with his arrival.

You are definitely in a minority.

However, more on here now seem to be falling in to the 'it could be worse' bracket. Others have just resigned themselves to just getting on with it bracket.

(not having a dig by the way).

  10. I think a lot of the noise and comments from Oxford fans isn't because they love Manning.

I think they are more worried about what he gets replaced with. As we have just seen from the list that bookies had for the City job, it wasn't exactly mouth watering was it. This will made worse if Manning brings any of his coaching team with him.

The more i think about it, the more i feel that we could do a hell of a lot worse. We have heard the line of "young, up & coming, attacking" coach before with LJ & Holden (even as far back as McInnes), but this guy seems to have more substance that the previous, particularly with working with CFG (as mentioned, they don't just employ people without their merits).

Still think it would have made more sense to of done this in the coming summer & the board really do need to back him as i don't think we have the quality of players to play his brand of football without struggling - at the moment we are a fast counter attacking team, so we certainly need further investment in the central midfield positions to play his way.

Lots of good points in your post Mr H.

I think it's the first sentence that typifies how we as City fans end up feeling though. There has been so much anger with what happened with NP and how it was ultimately dealt with by the hierarchy. I include myself in being angry with this.

Then we get noise that there could be getting a real statement of intent type of announcement that we are trying to not be a mid table Championship team moving forward. That we are making an assault on getting promoted. Then we get Liam Manning (TBC) as the apparent answer to this cause.

Then we as City fans all go around the houses on here for a few days and come back to 'oh well, we could do a lot worse'.
