When does a manager stop being a rookie?
At 150 games he's certainly not new to the job
Inexperienced compared to people have been around longer, sure. Thats how time works.
Garry Monk is 8 years older but only managed 120 games more. None would call him a rookie though, and I'd rather have Manning than bring him in.
Rookie in other sports generally means someone in their first season professionally, that wouldn't be the case here either.
How about Rookie Championship Manager?

The man is at Oxford not bloody Taunton town.
The unbelievable arrogance of some on here is gas levels of delusions of grandeur. We are a middling to small championship side not a ******* giant of English football.
Yes Oxford. A team that plays the Gas. It's a crap league.
If we aspire to be just a middling to small championship side then this is the type of appointment that we should have expected and accept.
It's got nothing to do with arrogance. If the hierarchy want City not to be an average team in the Championship then we need to stop acting like we are just an average club. It really is that simple.

I suppose beyond the coaching team the next question is who he may look to bring in player-wise. The January window is not far away and I wonder if he believes there is anyone in the current Oxford squad that will improve us. Their goalie is currently on loan from Brighton and has been in the U20 England squad.
Whoop whoop.
I'm proper excited now.
(unfortunately, sarcasm doesn't work in written form).

I'd have Lampard all day long over a guy that got sacked by MK.
Listening to this guy is just like listening to LJ all over again.
I've run out of reactions for today WSM but you are spot on.

Exciting only from the perspective of him being largely unknown, but with a reputation of developing exciting, attacking teams (as opposed to an experienced championship manager with set/predictable style of management). I accept that I'm more likely to be disappointed by the outcome of tenure than you, but for now I choose to have feelings of happiness and enthusiasm.
But let me put it another way, had the circumstances been different (e.g. Nigel left by his own accord), would you feel differently about this appointment?
I wouldn't. No.

Thanks for that but not sure about your own personal input is of any credence, let the facts speak for themselves in his very good win record.
A win record not in the Championship or any other comparable league.
We all know how savage the Championship is and that win record counts for F All.

If he was the man for the Top Team then I doubt he would’ve had to do one tbh.
You could be right there. However, somebody must have said to him to talk them through what happened at MK Dons when you got 15 points from 20+ games?

He must had did an incredible job at improving MK Dons as they sacked him.
They did sack him. Apparently, because he had to sell his best 2 players then loads of posters on here think that is fine and dandy. Also apparently, not his fault that he couldn't Coach the remaining 23 players in to accumulating more tan just 15 points from over 20 games.
He must be bloody good at interviews.

Well bully for you
It's not the teams it's the method and results
He's improved all of them
Please go back and have a look at his record and then repost.
Where have you seen his method and when and over what length of time?
Who has he improved and if you are talking about Oxford then short time he's been there doesn't merit much in the way of lavish praise does it?

Good luck to him. It's not his fault he's been offered the job and accepted it (if he has). I will reserve judgment until I see what happens on the pitch over the next season or two and how much budget he is given compared to the man he is taking over from.
Season or 2 !! You really think he will be here that long?

Excellent news, well thought of in the game, looking on their forum the Oxford fans to a man are gutted, time to rally round and get behind our new bright young thing.
Well thought of by who exactly?
An absolute nobody and crap appointment.

We all know ££ is suddenly going to be found down the back of a sofa
Oh right. So the hierarchy won't trust a proven, experienced Manager but will trust a nobody with hardly any senior management experience and no Championship experience with cash to spend.
City are turning in to a footy version of The Office.

Lapping it up I think is a little over the top. Maybe looking foward to hopefully seeing city really attack teams and be more cut throat on the ball rather than it be as boring as it has been for a while now.
So a coach that didn't last in L2 and then has a about 12 games in L1 is going to come in to the Championship and start really attacking teams?

Or he could be the one to push us on? Christ talk about being negative for sake of it
It's a crap appointment. All week OTIB has gone in to meltdown about NP and rightly so. Then just a few days later City fans are lapping it up that we've landed Manning as the replacement for NP. It's embarrassing.

My fear is the opposite. Manning has got both his last two teams to play exciting, attacking football. It only fell apart at MK when the owners sold his best two players and he couldn’t replace them (sound familiar much?). I fear that we will appoint one of the mediocre currently out of work managers/coaches instead (which is what an appointment this afternoon would suggest).
So he lost his 2 best players and then couldn't get a tune out of the rest of the squad in League 2. So what happens if he loses 2 of his best players in the summer at City then?
Not having a dig at anyone on OTIB, though I seem to ruffled a few feathers. I just don't get how Manning should be anywhere near the best option for the City job. Or is it that he's viewed as the best of a bad bunch?

If it was just this forum I think it would hold water.
The general reaction on wider social media is unlike any I've seen since I started supporting. It's new ground for us, the next appointment needs to be excellent and or a clear and obvious upgrade IMO.
Of course you are right Mr P.
Nobody and I mean nobody is going to convince me that Liam Manning is the right man for the job or anywhere near being an upgrade.
